Oily and Earthy

Another product from my DtN prize pack. Restore Super Antioxidant Serum for Dry, Mature & Damaged Skin contains a blend of various oils; including camellia, blackcurrant, organ, meadow-foam, rosehip, pomegranate, acai berry, evening primrose, vitamin E and neroli essential oil, as well as the following extracts: green coffee, blackberry, ginseng and green tea.

With an ingredient list like that, I was expecting one amazing serum. Unfortunately, I was rather disappointed. I didn't like this serum at all. It felt like I was applying a thick oil on my skin, instead of a serum. It wasn't absorbed easily and had quite an unpleasant, very powerful smell. A smell that's quite hard to describe, very dank and earthy. Now, I don't like the smell of Rosehip (I've only ever tried Essano's Rosehip oil and it smells very fishy to my nose), so I don't think it's the Rosehip, but I could be wrong.

Having used various serums in the past, including oil-based serums (like Oasis' Straight Up and On The Rock serums), I knew what to expect from a serum and this one just didn't deliver.

The pump action, 30ml bottle was really nice. It has a sturdy design and solid feel, with a 'floating' base that moves up with the product up each time it's used, so that it remains airtight and the oil doesn't coming into contact with air. One pump was sufficient to do my face, neck and décolletage.

After cleansing, toning and applying the oil, I'd gently massage it into my skin for a few minutes before going off to have my evening Milo and watch a bit of TV. If I accidentally touched my face or neck over the next few hours, I'd end up with oily fingertips. This serum just sits on the skin and doesn't go anywhere! I tried using less (half a pump) but still had the same problem. In the end, I got used to applying the serum after my bath or shower and then went I went to bed a few hours later, I quickly blotted my skin with a tissue before climbing into bed, to remove the excess oil and prevent it from marking my pillowcase. I figured that way my skin was still getting a few hours to absorb some of the benefits and it was only the excess that I was blotting off.

I wouldn't purchase or recommend this serum. There are serums on the market that work better, feel nicer and smell divine!

Tips: I ended up mixing half a pump with a little night cream each night, to diffuse the smell a little. I also wanted to use it up quickly, so I added two pumps to one squirt of my body lotion each night (in the palm of my hand) and mixed these together before applying them to my legs. It definitely enriched the body lotion and left legs feeling silky smooth and moisturised after shaving!

Great review Silvene. I'm finding DTN products mostly very earthy smelling too. I don't mind if the product is good, but not if it isn't!
