Rich Red.

I only own one of these - in rich red. I got this directly from the ELF website and it was US $1.50 (I got it during a 50% off sale, so RRP is US $3.00 on there).

The shade I got is 'rich red' - which, as the name suggests, is a rich, vibrant blood red.

Unlike other lipsticks, the packaging for this is long and thin. You twist the end of the lipstick up to disperse the product and apply it like any other lipstick.

The formula is slightly dry and a little stiff but definitely useable and not difficult to work with. The pigmentation is insanely high and very true matte.

Because it is a matte lipstick, you probably want to prime your lips before applying this - or apply a lip balm. I haven't found this supremely drying but I do like to prime my lips before wearing this as they are quite dry naturally.

A hidden feature of these is that you can pull the bottom off them and inside is a sharpener for them! I think this is really awesome and makes it super easy if you stash this in your handbag or take it when traveling.

Overall I think that for the price these are a steal and I am definitely heading over to iherb to purchase more.

Better get one of these in my cart, they sound worth a try.

Thanks Jesse! In terms of firmness it does kind of feel like a lip pencil - except the tip is thicker than a lip pencil. It could just be my one or maybe it is the colour but mine does feel a little stiff but for $1.50 I aint complaining ;P

Great review as always Jessicka! I've seen these about and was wondering what they were like, if you can sharpen them does that make them closer to a lip pencil in format than a standard lipstick, as in firmness?

My Best Mate Matte

I recently purchased one of these in Rich Red and oh my gosh, it is my new favourite (it's the lippy I'm wearing in my profile pic).

The packaging is super chic and it feels like it should be so much more expensive that what it is. Initially I was very nervous about putting it on as it's like a really skinny crayon and I am ham fisted at the best of times.

What I ended up doing is lining my lips with it - being VERY careful not to get all shaky as it's super pigmented and I wanted to look classy not clown-y. Then once my lips were lined I filled them in. Then to really ramp up the red I repeated the line and fill.

Did it stay on? Did it what! It survived sandwich eating, coffee drinking and toddler smooching and by the end of the day it was still on my lips - albeit more pinky than red, but still pretty!

What makes this lippy top of the pops for me is that it didn't dry my lips out at all. In fact they felt moisturised as promised.

For the price this products is a must-have and I'm looking forward to buying other colours in the range :)

Sounds like the perfect fit for me, been looking for a great cheap matte lipstick and it looks amazing on you in your profile pic! The longevity you mentioned sounds like a dream. Great review!

Yay for recklessness! I didn't bother with lipbalm before or after and my lips were all good :)

Ooh, I'm glad I succumbed to temptation and recklessly put one of these in my iherb basket then! Do you apply lipbalm before this or do you find it moisturising enough by itself? :)

Are the formulations different?

I have two of these and i own the red one and the natural one. The first shade i owned is red. That one glides on the lips very smoothly, its not patchy, its a neutral red but still leans a little towards the warmer side. The lasting power is okay and its not very long lasting, i'd say upto 4 hours long. You do need a lip liner for this to avoid it from feathering. It is also very pigmented and the colour payoff is great. The finish is like cream but you can mattify it with powder.

The natural colour however feels different. Because i loved the red so much, i bought another one. But this shade is patchy and and sits on top of the lips in a very unflattering way. The finish is satin but it feels a little drying .Im not sure if i got a dud, but not impressed with the formula of this shade.

The packaging is sleek and simple which I'm not complaining on. Theres a sharpener on the end of the pencil to sharpen your lipstick on which is a smart idea.

Over all, this is an okay product. You get what you pay for. Its still worth trying out.. Well the red that is.

Tips: Make sure you scrub beforehand and use a lipliner then blot your lips after application

Lovely colour but not hydrating

This lip colour was my first experience delving into the elf world and it's making me want more! I had heard so many great things about elf, so I was really excited to try this.

I have the colour 'Rich Red' a lovely, deep and stand-out beautiful red. I think it's the perfect red colour, when you want to have lips that really give you the wow factor.

The packaging is black and simple, very understated but still great for such an affordable product. It looks rather like a thick pencil and I was intrigued to apply this.

The formula is nice and glides over your lips. You have to be careful and have a steady hand with application. The formula is very pigmented, which is great. I always apply lip balm over this as well, as being matte it can dry out your lips.

The lip colour looks fantastic for a couple of hours. I do tend to get very dry lips, and after a little while the formula can slightly crack on my lips and my lips really lack hydration.

So, overall this is a beautiful pigmented lip colour, but not very moisturising to your lips.

Trying this lip colour has ignited a passion for elf products, and I can't wait to get some more from iherb and try them out.

Tips: Definitely wear a lip butter or balm over top this to try to prevent dryness to your lips.

what is the rave about?

I like the applicator and price! apart from that not that great. Colour looks very fake and unnatural. when it is on your lips it does not moisturize only make them look chalky. I do like the matte look but you will need to have perfect lips and highly moisturized to pull this off without looking like a cake face. EWWW

ELF does it again

I only have the shade Natural, which is a basic beige nude colour, it matte, not very creamy but easy to apply and doesnt last hours i need to touch up at lest twice a day, i think they have added more colors to their line now so i might check back when they are having a sale, but its a really nice lip liner, it opaque, and has a sort of cryon smell that I dislike. Its comes in a retractable lip pencil form.

Tips: The bottom bit comes off, and it functions as a sharpener!! so you will always have a pointed tip :)

A cheapie for the handbag

This was a ho-hum lippy for me. I like the idea of the pen type of application which was great, and it applied nicely but the colour didn't really last and my lips felt dry and a little rough after use.

I got quite a Tea Rose which is quite a neutral pink and it looked okay, but it didn't last too long and doesn't withstand a cup of coffee.

That said for the money and for the fact that theres a reasonable selection of shades, its great for having on hand for a quick touch up, in the handbag/car etc.

Affordable matte lipstick

I like the e.l.f brand. I think they make quality products at affordable prices. I own 3 of their matte lip colours in the shades Wine, Rich Red and Berry Sorbet. Each lip colour comes in a long, thin, black pen-like case. The case is matte black plastic, with the e.l.f branding in white on the side, and the colour of the lipstick indicated by the shade of plastic on the end. They are 1.4g. Each case has a removable lid.

The lipsticks themselves are long and thin. They wind-up just like regular bullet lipsticks. The long narrow shape makes the lipstick quite easy to apply, as it is easier to achieve a precise, sharp line with the narrow tip. The colour lasts quite a long time. I only have to touch up a little after eating and drinking. The pigment is good too. Lips can be covered well with only a couple of swipes. Like all matte lipsticks, these are a bit drying on the lips. There is also a little bit of transfer. On one of them the bullet has come loose inside, so it wobbles a bit when applied, making application a little trickier.

On the whole these are well-priced, good quality lipsticks. If you are looking for an affordable matte lipstick with decent pigment and staying power, then this is an excellent option.

e.l.f matte lip colour

This comes cheaply packaged like a twist up lip pencil, only a little thicker. When I unwrapped mine the actual product was loose in the tube. It literally just fell out of the stick, however I was able to push it back in and it works fine. I have the colour natural which is a nudish pink. Its definatly a good nude for those who don't suit that tannish colour nude that's very in right now. Its very much like my natural lip colour which makes it easy to pair with my blusher. I could be wrong but I think there are only 4 shades available which is a shame as I like the formulation better than the regular elf lipstick. It doesn't have a huge staying power. Maybe 2 hours max but it tastes pleasantly like sugar. Overall I would say if the colour range was better I would purchase again, and I would repurchase this particular colour but I am not a fan off the others. Some say its drying and need to exfoliate lips before but I don't have a problem with is.

Red

I purchased online on iherb but I purchased the red color, the package wasnt very eye catching but it was affordable, when I first applied it on, it was smooth I didnt have trouble with it what so ever and didnt have to re-appy untill after 3pm, I first applied at 6am. I continue to wear this even today :)

Tips: I found exfoliating your lips before hand helps the color stay on longer and look better once lippy has been applied :)
