Really makes eye shadow POP

I've been using the white eye shadow base for years now, its been a makeup product I've always had in my makeup box.

The best way I like to apply this is with my finger tips, a few seconds in the pot it warms up the product and I apply it directly to my eye lids. Once Im happy with the amount I set it with a translucent powder to prevent any creasing and then I follow in with my choice of colors.

I only use this if Im using bright colors as it makes these stand out even more, it also lasts longer.

I have used the black and white pearl pots, the black pot was great for creating dark smokey eyes, the white pearl pot was just the same as the regular white matte pot.

I would highly recommend the white or black pot, these need to be set properly with powder.

Vibrant eyeshadows but short-lived for oily lids

After watching a number of Youtube videos I was convinced that I would love this product just as much as those oohhhing and ahhhhing about it. It was one of the first makeup items I bought and it wasn’t a very good purchase. I bought it from Beauty Bliss a few years back for less than $15 and at this time they only had the shade White.

It’s packaged in a simple clear glass jar which is quite sturdy and can withstand a good couple of drops (as unintentionally tested by yours truly). The consistency is emollient enough that you can easily break through the top layer and pick up product with either a brush or a clean finger.

I had a number of issues with this product. Having oily hooded lids I needed a base that would help to not just give my shadow an extra pop of colour but help to keep my shadow from creasing as well as making it last longer.

I would apply a thin layer and begin to blend it out. I found that you needed to work fast because once dried it was hard to budge but I also found it patchy when applying with either a brush or finger. When trying to even it out it it looked like a build up of product so the smooth canvas was nowhere in sight.

Once I managed to create a decent canvas I would set it with a neutral eyeshadow or powder but would find that my lids were already creasing (ugh!). By this point it was already too much effort for me to “fix” these painpoints.

One thing is for sure though, when I applied my eyeshadow combo the colours were more vibrant than if I hadn’t applied the base. But within 2-3 hours my shadow would already start to fade and I was left with more of a mess on the lids than something vibrant.

After a few months of fighting with the product I simply moved on so it’s not something I would recommend for oily hooded lids.

Shadow Security!

I'm usually an avid buyer of the E.l.f. Eyeshadow Primer (which is SUPER cheap and basically a flawless product), but I decided to give the NYX version a whirl to see how it compared.

Firstly, NYX is great because they don't test on animals and provide affordable cosmetics which are easy to locate. Tick!

Secondly, this primer comes with a slight shimmer, which I really like as an alternative (or in addition to) using an inner corner highlight. Subtle and pretty.

Thirdly, this product works really well. Just like my E.l.f. favourite, it applies easily, and prevents eyeshadow from creasing all day long.

The only slight downside for me is that I don't like the packaging very much. There's something about a pot rather than a tube that just feels much more unhygienic. There's also the fact that this costs an extra $10, but performs exactly the same as my E.l.f favourite.

Verdict: A good product, but won't be changing my go-to primer anytime soon.
