Would You Try Scalp Micropigmentation?

My hair loss woes are no secret, in fact I wrote an article about reverse-washing in an attempt to fatten up my pitiful looking locks not that long ago. Since then I've also bought the L'Oreal Elvive Hyaluron Plump Shampoo and Conditioner after reading the excellent reviews and had massive success with that (5 joyful stars from yours truly!) Still, the obsession with creating a fuller-looking head of hair continues, and it was with much interest that I stumbled across scalp micropigmentation. So what is scalp micropigmentation, and is it ideal for those of us experiencing thinning hair? Read on...

What is scalp micropigmentation?

Quite simply, scalp micropigmentation is similar to eyebrow microblading in that it places pigment on your scalp in a way that creates the look of thicker hair. How it differs is that micropigmentation penetrates deeper, resulting in longer lasting pigmentation, and rather than a manual blade it uses an electric tattoo machine to place tiny dots of pigmentation into your skin.

What does scalp micropigmentation involve?

An initial consultation will see your needs assessed, a treatment plan discussed, along with a cost breakdown.

Once you've given the go ahead, your practitioner will colour match your hair in order to create a look that is as natural as possible. Scalp micropigmentation generally requires three to four treatments, and time spent at each treatment can range from two to six hours depending on your needs.

Worried about the pain? A topical is applied to numb the area being worked on. However, pain felt will differ from person to person depending on the individual's tolerance.

Your practitioner will let you know the full details of what you can and can't do, but generally post-treatment you need to avoid the sun, doing anything that causes excessive sweating, and washing your hair for a few days. On top of that, inbetween treatments and for a month after your final treatment cholorinated swimming pools, steam rooms and saunas need to be avoided.

How long does it last?

Scalp micropigmentation, much like other tattoos, will last for years, however as time goes on fading will occur and top up treatments may be required.

Is it for me?

For those who are experiencing more serious hair loss (due to alopecia, cancer treatment or genetic balding) it can create the look of having a shaved head, however it won't be as realistic looking as the appearance that can be achieved when there is still some existing hair to work with.

Also, while scalp micropigmentation can't give you the look of long, thick hair, the short strokes it creates will give the illusion of a thicker looking head of hair, and works especially well at concealing thinning around the temples, the very front region of your hair, and in other areas where you experience hair thinning.

How much does it cost?

Looking online, the cost of scalp micropigmentation in New Zealand varies depending on how much work you'll need done, with prices that I saw ranging from $1000 through to $9000.

Anything else I need to know?

Much like any other treatment that is permanent or semi-permanent, you need to do your research. Look for, or ask around for, recommendations. When you've found a practitioner that you like the look of, ask the questions you need to ask to feel comfortable, and don't be afraid to walk away if you're not one hundred percent convinced that scalp micropigmentation is right for you.

While scalp micropigmentation isn't for me - not only is my pain threshold way too low to even contemplate tattooing my temples, let alone any other part of my body, I noticed this morning teeny tiny sprouts of hair fuzzing about my forehead, so I have hope that my locks will be back in semi-full force again one day - it does appear to be an excellent way for those who are experiencing hair thinning or hair loss and aren't feeling great about it to regain confidence in their appearance once more.

The big question is...

Would you try scalp micropigmentation? Or is this a no-go for you? And if you have gone through the micropigmentation procedure on your scalp, we'd love to hear your experience! Chat below!

If I needed it then hell yea!

Luckily I don't need this right now, but it actually seems quite useful. Given that it is semi-permanent it should be gone before one turns completely grey, if not it could look weird.

Sounds interesting probably would if I felt I needed it

I'd like to try it because my hair thinned after an illness, but cost and pain are off-putting and my hair is white so I'm not sure if it would help much. It sounds like a great solution to thinning hair though as it is very much a part of good self image not to have thin hair - more than I realised until it happened to me.

Oh don't think l would like to try this for myself, if l had thinner hair l would consider it

Yes I would probably consider getting this done if my hair was getting to the stage of looking too bald.I have noticed my hair is thinning out around the top of my head as I age and most likely due to the big "M" but I do have quite thick hair and it's not a big deal for me yet.

If I needed to, I may consider it as an option.

I would if I felt I needed to. I've had my eyebrows micropigmented where they use tiny needles much like tattooing and they look really good. I've received plenty of compliments and put some people in touch with the company Making Faces. They do scalp pigmentation too.

If I needed it yeah I would
