Why Your Lip Balm’s Failing Your Lips

You know those moments in life when the clouds part and angels sing as you discover the answer to a problem that has plagued you for years? I had that this weekend and now I need to make an apology…

Lip balms, I’ve been hating on you something wicked during the last decade or so. If you go back through the reviews I wrote when I was a Beauty Review member you’ll find that most of my reviews saw a very dissatisfied Kellie grumping about how you and yours would leave my lips drier than ever. Well, lip balms. I’m sorry. Kind of. You see you weren’t totally to blame. I mean I’d love to say it wasn’t you it was me. But in this case while it wasn’t all about you, it was a little bit, and well it was also was a little bit to do with me and a lot to do with where I was working at the time I was applying you.

What the heck am I going on about? Well according to this article from Stylecaster the effectiveness of a lip balm comes down to the ingredients in it and also, to some extent, the environment you’re in.

Basically if your balm contains glycerine or hyaluronic acid it could well be sucking the moisture from your lips, an action made worse if you happen to be working or living in a dry environment. In my case it was an air conditioned office.

So does that mean lip balms containing hyaluronic acid or glycerine are a big old waste of money? Not at all. You just have to make sure they contain ingredients to counteract the potential for drying, such as shea butter or beeswax, which provide a barrier and keep moisture locked in.

You know what I’ll be doing now? …Reading the ingredients list of every balm I’ve ever purchased and kept and sussing out which are good and which are not so much. Don’t you love that you’re never too old to learn something new?

So have you had problems with your lip balms in the past? Will you be hitting up the ingredients list and seeing if the problem lies in the formulation? Chat away…

Hmmm, interesting article that taught me a few things that I never would have guessed possible. I love lip balms and I'm going to be reading the ingredients list from now on as well.

Awesome, now i know what to look for. I have come across awful lip balms before. It seems so dodgy of companies to put the useless ingredients into it.

I like to read the ingredients list for not just lipbalms but a lot of skincare and beauty products. And my favorite lip balm brand Hurraw! is amazing. Also Living Nature's Lip Hydrator is really good.

I have a couple that I've found just dry my lips out - the worst one was an Antipodes balm! I try to stick with ones that I know work, like my Burts Bees ones.

I've toned down my lip balm usage heaps and now I find my lips are better than ever before! I think I was in a bit of a vicious cycle, now I find staying hydrated is the most important!

I have very dry skin in general so my lips are of course always dry too! I have many different brands of lip balm but I can't really say that any of them really work. I just use vaseline instead! I scoup out some from the small tub and put it in an empty lip balm case. I find it's the best thing for lips!! You only need a small amount as well.

Haven't really had much of a problem with lip balms being dry. But one thing that really annoys me is if I wear lipbalm under lipstick the lipstick will smudge off and without the lipbalm the lipstick feels really dry.

I know for a fact that my EOS balms dry out my lips. I have five of the suckers on the go, scattered around the house, so I will continue to use them. My never fail though is the simple Smiths Strawberry Lip Balm made by the Rosebud Perfume Company. 22 grams of awesome lips. Four ingredients. Petrolatum, Lanolin, white beeswax and trade secret strawberry flavour. I have had no regrets about my impulse buy! The bossy one is good too, but I find mine started getting melty in warmer rooms.

I have found the Nivea lip butters to be really good.

wow! I had a feeling something was up, with all the use of lipbalms in the world today. Good to understand some science around it. Now however, when looking around at my glosses, balms... where are the ingredients? I have found one of the five from my handbag/desk space has the ingredients on the container - I guess the rest had them on the packaging? must check next time I purchase.

Oh so this may be a reason why some lip balms don't work for me! I've also heard that petroleum is no good too!

25th November, 2015

I'm not into lip balms and don't like body butters at all.

If I plan on purchasing a different one then I'll be sure to check the ingredients (just wish they'd use reader-friendly names!?). I'm happy with the two that I'm using; just did a quick check of the ingredients and so far so good :-)

I often had the same problem back when I was working in an office and it wasn't just my lips cracking but my hair and skin were suffering too. I often would put said problems down to being what my skin and hair were and thought I had to conceal and not heal (I'm wiser now). My hubby was the first one to say to me (after I repurchased yet another tube of hand cream and lip balm) that it could be making the matter worse so it took me longer to realise thought he actually could be on to something. It wasn't until I had my first child that I discovered my savior lip product, also found in the baby care aisle of the super market.

I have only ever tried a couple of lip balms but it is my goal to try lots and lots. I kjow so many people that adore them, I want to be one of them! I will be aware to have the right ones though.
