Under the Sea Nail Tutorial with Sally Hansen Colour Therapy

Tutorial and Images - Debbie Page-Wood

When I was asked if I'd like to create a look for BR, using Sally Hansen's Colour Therapy range, selecting only two colours from the 14 gorgeous shades in the range was really difficult.  I had so many ideas, just looking at the colours, but I really didn't want to end up with similar colours to what I already have in my collection.

The first two that really jumped out at me were “Primrose & Proper” and “Teal Good”, a lovely pink and a gorgeous teal that looks a bit more blue than true teal.

Now, I know that these two colours don't really go very well together, so creating a look with them was challenging. Some of what I tried didn't work out too well, while other combinations looked okay. It all depended on the design, the lighting, etc.

What I really wanted to do, was use these two polishes to show a few simple nail art ideas that could be replicated with any of the other colours in Sally Hansen's Colour Therapy range, for example "Primrose & Proper" would probably look great paired up with “Oh My Magenta”, and “Teal Good” would go wonderfully with “Mud Mask”.

Here are six simple nail art ideas using “Primrose & Proper” and “Teal Good”.  From left to right we have contrasting polka dots, "Under the Sea", marbling, a half divide with gold striping tape, a quilted nail with silver accents and a stamped rose design, as I wanted to test these polishes out and see if they were pigmented enough to use for stamping, too.

I noticed that the consistency of the polishes varies quite widely. "Primrose & Proper" is quite liquid and thin, whereas "Teal Good" was much thicker and more gloopy.  They were both very easy to apply, they dried quickly between coats, and the flat, wide brush with it's rounded tip makes painting nails a breeze (especially toes. My little toes were done with just one swipe of the brush!). One thing I'm not a fan of is the pointy, square-edged base of the bottle.  It makes it really uncomfortable to roll the polish bottles between the palms of my hands, and can become quite painful if they need to be mixed well, like the first time I used them.  I always roll my polish bottles, and never shake them, to prevent air bubbles being trapped in the polish, as this can cause the polish to thicken and may also affect application ...No one wants to find air bubbles in their freshly painted manicure!

Under the Sea with Sally Hansen

To create this “Under the Sea” feature nail, using Sally Hansen's Color Therapy range, I used:

  • Sally Hansen Color Therapy in “Teal Good”
  • Sally Hansen Color Therapy in “Primrose & Proper”
  • Sally Hansen Color Therapy Top Coat
  • a starfish water decal
  • nail glue & a Glad bag
  • blue diamante
  • brown caviar beads
  • dotting tool (or a clean toothpick)
  • wax pencil
  • tweezers
  • water

Start off with two thin coats of Sally Hansen Color Therapy in “Teal Good” and allowing it to dry fully between coats.

I cut out and soaked my starfish water decal in some water for 20 seconds, before removing it from the backing paper with the tweezers and sticking it onto the nail.

Using a dotting tool, I placed a few accent dots of Sally Hansen Color Therapy in “Primrose & Proper” around the starfish, in varying sizes. Wait for this to dry completely before continuing.

Apply a drop of nail glue onto a glad bag (nail glue doesn't stick very well to Glad bags, so you'll have time to pick up and place little dots of the glue onto the nail before it dries), and using the dotting tool or a toothpick, place dots of glue where you want the diamante to be placed. Pick up diamante with the wax pencil (or on a toothpick) and position them in the glue. Do the same with the brown caviar beads.

Once the glue is completely dry, top coat the nail, being careful to go around the beads and diamante, not over the top, as applying top coat over the diamante will dull them slightly and they won't reflect the light as well as they should. Allow the top coat to dry fully.

If you're painting your own nails, don't forget to finish off your manicure with a little cuticle oil and some hand cream. Gently massage the cuticle oil onto the skin around the nails, onto your cuticles and over your nail polish, too, to help keep it flexible.  Finally, massage a dollop of hand cream into those hardworking hands.

Love,

Debbie x
