The Shocking Truth About Bar Soap

By BR Amelia

There’s been a bit of a stigma around bar soap the last few years. Once a staple in any shower or bath, it’s been shunned for the perceived cleanliness and hygiene offered by body wash. And as body wash grew in popularity, people began to stare down their noses at the humble bar of soap… and then the whispers began.

“It can’t be all that sanitary, can it?”

“A bar that sits in humid conditions, it must be bacteria-ridden.”

“Everyone sharing the same bar of soap, surely that’s just a recipe for sharing germs?”

Poor old soap, it went from being every family’s way of keeping themselves squeaky clean to sitting in a shower caddy slowing eroding away while other methods of cleaning were employed. Well, my lovelies, prepare to love soap again…

According to this piece from PRNewswire, your run of the mill soap isn’t the big bad we think it is.

Recently the FDA ruled against the necessity to use antibacterial soaps, saying that soap is naturally antibacterial, a sentiment echoed by Ed George, Vice President of Research and Development at Bradford Soap Works. He further stated that bar soaps were healthier for the body than body washes and much more environmentally friendly. And apparently several studies and clinical research tests have seen bar soaps come out on top.

The piece also mentioned information from Cambridge University, which says bar soap when used regularly does not support the growth of bacteria, and in fact bacteria cannot be transferred between people who share bar soaps.

Now as this information is coming from a soap manufacturer, one would have reason to be a bit suspicious, and one was, but then I found this piece from the HuffPo in which scientist Elaine L Larson PD, debunks the theory that bars of soap are a germaphobes nightmare. She does admit that germs can and do live on soap, but she does go on to say they’re not the kind of bugs anyone who is healthy needs to worry about. And getting rid of said bacteria that takes up residence in the slime of the soap is as simple as running it under the shower spray or running tap water before you put bar to body.

So there you have it. The old school bar of soap is back in fashion. However while I was consider sharing it with family, I think I’d pass on flatmates, and I’d prefer not to share it with strangers in public toilets. But that’s just me … I mean, it’s important to have some boundaries, right?

Now, do tell… have you been shunning bar soap thinking it was full of bugs? Are you thinking you might go back to the way of the bar? Or have you always been a fan no matter what anyone has said about your beloved

I use bar soap to wash my hands but that's all as it irritates my skin everywhere else. If anyone has a good suggestion for one that will not irritate really sensitive skin I would be open to that. Because I also find the liquid soaps really drying

Ive never been a big fan on soaps aswell I find them to be way to harsh for my skin and end up breaking out.

I keep both a bar of soap and liquid soap at the sink of my home bathroom. I mostly use the bar because I find the liquid soap drys my skin out, but my partner prefers the liquid. Besides for bars of soap I can buy ones with all-natural ingredients in a variety of flavours, liquid soap however usually can't be all natural.

I don't use antibacterial soap and am happy with bar soap! I have one on my bathroom sink now I am working through.

I haven't really thought about it, I think cause that's what was around when we were little that's all we really used. Now there are so many different options we don't really have bar soaps. Having little kids I have found it easier having a foaming hand wash to help make it easier to teach them to wash their hands as most places tend to have foam or liquid soaps in the bathrooms. The shower is always filled of different body washes and scrubs normally what either has been on special. I do have a couple of bars tucked away incase we run out of other stuff.

I never use bar soap. The man in my house tends to leave souvenirs on the soap once he has finished cleaning himself.

I still use bar soap in the shower - a natural one without all the chemicals, I use it then rinse it off :)

Im definately a liquid soap girl. I find any soap is sooooo drying and makes my skin feel tight and itchy.

this topic is very good! although no one wants to share soap for a body wash I will try remember that it could be healthier than using shower gel I have lots of bars of soap at home but tend to like to use shower gel and keep those for hand washing. I like the idea of a hydrating soap such as dove and to learn that it is naturally anti bacterial is en lightening to me too. Lets face it when it comes to hand washing in shared toilets and bathrooms sharing bar soap is better than no soap

I just don't like the feel of soap. Gel is usually more moisturising I feel

We use liquid soap mostly, but bar soap for extra handwashing and also the shower. We get the rose-scented oatmeal soaps from Bed Bath & Beyond which smell divine, even my hubby likes them!

As a kid I would use soaps all the time, but over the years I started to notice it was the reason my skin would dry out almost instantly and break open with ezcema. The only soap I do use is the eco soap because I noticed it tend to soothe my skin rather then dry it out, and always keep it in own compartment from others

I am glad it's not that gross. I do prefer liquid but I'll use bar soap every now and then. I feel the same way about it being in public toilets too Though!

Antibacterial, we need some bacteria to help build up our immune system. I do generally use a body wash because of the fragrances, however bar soaps are used by husband. I have bought beautiful bar soaps for me to use. There are such beautiful soaps around, such special treats.
