The Correct Order To Put On Makeup

While we like to say there are no rules in makeup, when it comes to makeup application there is a preferred order with which to apply each product. Yes, there can be variations - for example, if you're going heavy on the eyeshadow and know there'll be a lot of fall out, sometimes applying your eyes first followed by your base can save you a lot of time and fix-up effort - but, on the whole, sticking to the below 'rules' will mean your makeup is applied no muss, no fuss and in a way that will last while looking great.

So what goes on when? Read on...

Face Base

First things first: PRIME. If you're not a fan of primer, do ensure you've applied a moisturiser in order to create a plump, hydrated canvas.

if you've any colour correcting you like to do - whether that's adding green colour corrector where you see redness to cancel it out, or purple corrector to reduce the look of any sallowness - now's the time to do it.

Next, it's time to apply your foundation, and then spot conceal any areas that need a little more coverage.

Powder/Creams

Depending on what kind of foundation you've used (if you've used powder foundation, stick to powder products or you could mess up your base, however if you've used a liquid foundation you can use either cream or powder) now's the time to go in with your contour, bronzer, blush and then highlighter.

Brows and Eyes

It's time to make those peepers pop! Groom your brows. How far you go in this step is up to you. Some prefer to run a spoolie through, perhaps with some clear gel to tame their brows. Others like to groom, fill, shape and tame. Follow that up with creating your eye look using eyeshadow and/or eyeliner, followed by a lashing of mascara and, if you're feeling extra, your faux lashes.

Lips

Nude lips with a face full of makeup is a bit like putting together a stunning outfit and then going barefoot, so line your lips (if you're so inclined), and pop on some lippy and/or gloss.

Set and Spritz

Once you've created a look you love, you can follow it up with a dusting of translucent powder and a spritz of setting spray to fix your face in place, or go it alone with just the setting spray and you're good to go!

And just like that, you're ready to face the day! Best of all? By having a makeup application routine, after a while it gets to the point that you can apply your makeup on autopilot, freeing up brain time to consider the important things... like what you'll have for lunch, and what beauty products you'll be racing out to buy when you finally win Lotto. (What? A girl can dream!)

So, are you applying your makeup in the 'correct' order? Do you have another order you prefer? And will you be changing up your makeup application routine after reading this? If so, how? Chat below!

I prime my face first. Then eye makeup. Then foundation and powders. Then lips then face spritz.

Growing up I didn't use primer. I really do see value in it through I wore make up without it recently but I did use moisturizer. Later I feel like the foundation was showing up my wrinkles

Serum before anything else gives me a good finish but I might try doing my eyes before I apply all my foundation.

I do it all wrong! For me it's serum and then straight on to the eyes and eyebrows. That's where I'm most likely to make a wee mess that needs wiping up. Then it's moisturiser and foundation (usually I mix these together) and finally lips. I think I still need to do eyes before foundation so I don't muck up my finish, but I can see that leaving eyebrows till after makes good sense, as I do get foundation on my brows unless I'm super careful. Definitely gonna do this from now on. Thanks, BR!

Moisturiser first then I start on my eye makeup because I tend to find that takes the longest if I am going out and half the time I end up getting mascara under my eyes which usually ruins my foundation lol. After the eyes are done I then put on my foundation and finish with a light coverage of setting powder, bronzer and a sweep of blush,a touch of lippy then lastly a quick spritz of setting spray.I am quite happy with this routine so I probably will stick with it.

If I'm going to do full eye makeup I always do that first then I do my foundation. That way if I get it anywhere I can give it a quick wipe with micellar water and don't have to worry about ruining my base.

I’m set in my routine but I never use a setting spray or translucent powder. Do you use those Macs?
