It's not often that my child truly shocks me. After nearly ten years together I'm pretty used to her ways. However, the other day as we drove home from school she came out with something that I never, ever expected to hear. From her, or anyone else for that matter...
'Mum, if I could dye my hair I'd put two light pieces of colour here and here'.
And then she took hold of two chunks of hair that frame either side of her face.
You know that iconic image from Home Alone where Kevin holds his face and screams? Imagine that look on my face times a zillion, because in those few seconds my daughter's words sent me back in time to the mid-90s when chunky, obvious highlights were the look to have. Think Ginger Spice with her two massive lightened stripes.
At the time, depending on your style vibe, some would say the trend was fabulous. Jaw droppingly gorgeous. The thing to do. But that was then and this is now, and I couldn't understand why my daughter suddenly felt it would be a good idea to revive this look?
So I did some digging and it turns out chunky highlights are indeed having a comeback. But, are they as obvious in this year, 2022? Well, yes and no. Chunky highlights are being embraced in two ways. One is where the hair around the face is coloured in a lighter shade that works with the rest of your hair, serving to frame the face in a way that's natural, emphasises your features and is actually really pretty.
The second? Some folk are going old school style. Think blackened chunks. Vibrant red chunks. Platinum chunks. The key being that the front framing is very different to the rest of the hair colour. The look is pronounced, out there, and leaves me wondering if those rocking it will start singing about genies and bottles and wanting to be evicted from their confines.
Clearly, I prefer the updated take on the look, but much like the rest of the Beauty Review crew, I'm a little tickled that what was then is once again now. Though if my nine year old thinks she can convince me to spring for a trip to the salon so she can look like a 90s popstar... well, it's a case of stop right now, thank you very much.
So, the question of the week is... Will you be rocking the 90s chunky highlights once more? Is this 90s look nice or nasty? Hit up the poll and get chatting below!
They just looked so wonky and SO MUCH WORSE when not done well. I’ll stick to ombré thanks haha
