As our intern Elaine once said "mastering liquid lipstick is like mastering liquid eyeliner...but on your mouth."

The ultimate downfall of a liquid lipstick seems to be it's ability to dry your lips out.  Dry lips will never, ever look good and so the right liquid lipstick needs to be super hydrating, especially if the finish is matte.

Here are three Top Rated Matte Liquid Lipsticks we think you should own - the Beauty Crew love them, but more importantly they've been given wow reviews by real Kiwi consumers; the real Beauty Experts around here!

Well if one lip product has ruled the last 18 months it has to be the liquid lipstick.  And it's probably one of the trickier products to nail the application.  As our intern Elaine once said "mastering liquid lipstick is like mastering liquid eyeliner...but on your mouth."  And yeah, she's right - skipping the prepping, scrubbing and priming of your pout is simply not an option, lest you want to look like the Joker stranded in the arid desert of course.  Trying to do one thick coat instead of patiently layering for a colour pay off?  Not unless you want gluggy lips.

The ultimate downfall of a liquid lipstick seems to be it's ability to dry your lips out.  Dry lips will never, ever look good and so the right liquid lipstick needs to be super hydrating, especially if the finish is matte.

So what liquid lipsticks are worth buying?  What won't dry you out, and what offers the easiest finish?  What lipsticks are the most highly rated by real Kiwi consumers?  Here's the five most top rated liquid lipsticks in New Zealand!

Australis Velourlips - 4/5 - 239 reviews

They say: It applies creamy, lasts all day and finishes with a soft suede look.A matte lip cream that moves with your lips so you don’t have to worry about caking and flaking.

You say:  This product combines all of my favourite lipstick features - matte, bright and long lasting. The Maliboo velourlips (pink) is brighter than both my MAC Candy Yum Yum and Lancome Pink Bon Bon, a feat that I didn't think was possible to achieve. It is a statement colour that looks flawless when applied with the 'lipgloss' applicator and a little help from a lip brush. The formula applies like a thick gloss, but dries to a very matte finish that doesn't budge. Whether you are eating, drinking or talking, this product stays on for hours. I love that this is a highly pigmented lip colour however it may be too bold and drying for some.  - chelseaadelaide

Lime Crime Velvetines – 4.5/5 - 169 reviews

They say:  Lip stain that goes on liquid and dries completely matte. Touch-proof, long-wearing, and utterly addictive!

You say:  These lipsticks are very opaque, and a little goes a long way. The formula goes on so smoothly but dries fast so you need to be quick with fixing any mistakes. The staying power of these Velvetines is INSANE, I can usually go from morning till evening without having to touch it up at all! (Maybe once slightly during the day due to eating but that is expected.) They last forever and smell so yummy! – Diamond

NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams – 4.3/5 - 53 reviews

They say:  Neither lipstick nor lip gloss, this matte lip cream is a new kind of lip color that goes on silky smooth and sets to a matte finish. Soft Matte Lip Cream is surprisingly durable and, unlike some matte lipstick formulas, also moisturizing.

You say:  These are my favourite lip products! They're incredibly smooth and non-drying; with an amazing level of pigmentation! The colour range has nudes, pinks and bold colors and you'll definitely find one to suit. I will keep trying to buy ALL of them! The doe footed applicator is especially good for people like me who may not be the best at applying lipstick smoothly. - momiji

Jeffree Star Liquid Lipsticks – 4.8/5 - 52 reviews

They say:  Our liquid lipstick goes on opaque, dries completely matte and stays on for hours! This product is 100% vegan & cruelty-free! (tips before use: exfoliate then apply to bare lips! avoid food with oil... and no making out, kisses are ok!)

You say: The pigmentation is fantastic, the pink I got really is a gorgeous hot pink and very opaque. Just like it says on the box, it was dry in about 30s, didn't feel drying at all, and was pretty transfer proof from the get-go. The first day I wore it from about 9 am to 11 pm and didn't have to touch it up at all, which is unbelievably impressive in my books! – berrylicious beauty

ColorPop Ultra Matte Lip Cream - 4.1/5 - 22 reviews

They say:  This thin and lightweight formula glides onto the lips smoothly and leaves SUPER intense pigment-rich colour with a bold, ultra matte look. It’s very long wearing and completely kiss proof!

You say:  Gorgeous and Affordable.  These are handsome down my favorite matte lippy's! Everything about these are great; the colour range, texture, staying power and price. It's awesome to see such a beautiful makeup range on the market that is so affordable. I have at least 20 of these with my favorite colour being Tulle followed by Stingraye, Prim and More Better. - suezy2001

I really love the loreal paris rouge signature ink!

7th May, 2020

I love the Mellow Cosmetics Liquid Lipsticks! They're amazing and one of my favs.

7th May, 2020

I think I have tried all three and they're pretty good. My favorite is Kat Von D's though.

I've tried Mellow liquid lipsticks and I really like them. They are non drying, lots of color and last a long time. They aren't transfer proof though. But when it comes to liquid lipsticks you either go for transfer proof and then it's also drying or you go for a non-drying formula which transfers.

5th May, 2020

I don't think I have tried any of these!

I haven't tried any of these but they definitely look and sound great. Such pretty colours too. Would be interested in the more natural nude colours as I don't do bold colours so well lol.

Love Maybelline superstay matte lip ink - I have quite a few colours now and was lucky to be able to trial it for BR. I really want to try Mellow lip paint reading reviews and comment - it looks like it’s fantastic too.

I agree with maybelline it’s truly matte and stays forever! I love the dreamer colour. Took a babywipe and some effort to remove. Wore off a little on the inside lip as to be expected but not too shabby for the price I paid.

I agree that the Maybelline Ink is good . I’ve tried it and love it . I’d like to try that l’oreal one . I love mattes because I don’t need to top as much as I would a lipstick . It doesn’t move onto my teeth either .

29th April, 2020
