Ok, so it's Spring time. And Level 4 Lockdown time. Which means now is the perfect time to get your Spring Clean on!

When it comes to sorting & cleaning there are pretty much two types of people - hoarders and chuckers.  Chuckers will get rid of most unused or old things without a second thought.  Hoarders will cling to unused, old or broken things just in caseBecause it reminds them of that time they bought it.  It's limited edition.  It was expensive.

Well as always, we're here to help.  So here's our top tips for stream lining and cleaning your beauty collection.

  1. Check the expiration dates.  When it comes to expiration dates, be ruthless and if it's out of date, chuck it out!  If it's one of your favourite products (which is unlikely if it's unused after it's expiration date) replace it and you'll notice the difference between your old product and one in date.  Trust us!  Read this - OMG!! Do You Check Your Makeup Expiration Dates?! to find out the expiration period of most products.
  2. If you haven't used it in the last three months, chances are you won't miss it if it's gone!  If you absolutely can't bear to throw things out, let us prove our point.  Put anything you haven't used in a box and stash the box in your wardrobe.  If you don't dig through it over the next three months, you know what to do right?
  3. If you can't bear to throw things out, do a Project Pan.  Check out my article Project Pan and challenge yourself to use up x amount of products before buying any more!
  4. Wash your brushes and give your products a wipe.   When you think about it, makeup bags are breeding grounds for icky things.  If you've suffered from an eye infection, chuck out your mascara for sure.  Sharpen pencils and wipe with a disinfectant or rubbing alcohol.  Same for if you suffer from cold sores.  Slice the top off your lipsticks, sharpen pencils and wipe with a disinfectant.  Makeup brushes need to be washed weekly - don't forget your sponge applicators in your compacts and palettes!
  5. Wash your storage.  Especially your cloth makeup bags - imagine the places they've been and what they've been in contact with.  ICK.  We're in a pandemic - do we need more prodding that germs travel on everything we touch?
  6. Opt for multi purpose products.  Lip/Cheek tints and all over pencils are great for streamlining your stash.
  7. Let it go.  Don't be bogged down with guilt over throwing away products you've spent money on.  Take a deep breath and let them go. Decluttering is good for the soul - just learn from the financial hit!

Does your stash need a clean out?  Are you a hoarder or a chucker?  Do you dread spring cleaning or is it something you relish?  Share your thoughts below!

I’m currently in the process of doing this throughout the whole house. But I am ACHING to get around to refreshing the makeup kit and skin routine

2nd September, 2021

Great tips. I usually find going through all my skincare for the expiry dates a bit time consuming as it could be written anywhere, sometimes in hard to see places, so i write the dates on top of my new unopened boxes of skin care and use them in order from the shortest expiry date first.

2nd September, 2021

These are such great tips. All I’ve done so far is washing my makeup sponges and brushes

31st August, 2021

Well, I know I should! I did go through my drawer and go through products I haven't used it to see if the ones that hadn't been added last time I looked have been added for review now.

31st August, 2021

I'm a hoarder mostly though there have been times I've gone through my unused, unopened items and put together gift packs for people. I used to buy makeup every week/other week or 3 weeks. Now I scrutinize my purchases and only buy what I will use in the immediate future. I do have heaps of makeup from when I was hauling makeup weekly, bi-monthly and monthly and I can't really let go of that sadly as my collection is probably worth thousands. I have been project panning somewhat as there's some to go products I really want to use up. My brushes I clean weekly and beauty blenders after each use.

31st August, 2021

I'm both. I crave new makeup though so I do have to get rid of stuff in order to get more

30th August, 2021

Definitely a bit of both. I do hold on to stuff that I no longer use much, usually as a back-up in case my favs run out and I'm stuck, but I love doing a clear-out too... Basically I really hate wastage, but I'm pretty good about watching the expiry dates. So during lockdown I've been trying to use up all my less-loved creams and makeup. I figure, if my face looks a bit shiny or the eyeliner isn't as dark or long-lasting as I like, my skype / zoom contacts probably won't notice (I hope)! It feels better than chucking out perfectly good cosmetics just because they don't perform as well as my absolute favs anyway.

30th August, 2021

Yay spring cleaning! Though my collection isn't that big now.

Being in lockdown have been trying a few different looks with eyshadows and lippies i don't wear as much as the neutrals. A little bit of a lockdown pan.

11th May, 2020

I had a good clean out of lipsticks. I don't even wear them much and had way too many. I know I have some expired makeup that I can't bare to part with

23rd April, 2020

Oh dear... I am definitely a hoarder!!! I don't wear a full face often at all (once a month maybe?) so a lot of my makeup may be past it's date..

23rd April, 2020

I'd say I'm a bit of a hoarder. I tend to have a couple of back ups. However, i actively keep track of all expiry dates and do my best to use up all of the products. The only ruthless bit about my clearouts is probably when i'm trialing new products so I can do my reviews. Usually lasting atleast 2 weeks but sometimes upto a month. If I dont like it or it doesn't work for me i get rid of it at that stage.

22nd April, 2020

I am both ! Probably more of a hoarder sadly

22nd April, 2020

Arrrrrrgh have had a big clear out and using products previously opened and not finished. But on the upside there is room for a few new things :-)

18th April, 2020

Definetly a chucker. But must admit I do hold some products longer than their "expiry date"

15th April, 2020

I am now a chucker for sure! If I haven't used something in ages then out it goes :-)
