How To Write The Perfect Perfume Review!

Fragrance reviews. They seem easy enough to write, except after chatting with our lovely Beauty Review moderator, it appears that perfume reviews are the one category that people struggle with the most. So we thought we'd break down what makes a fab fragrance review, along with showing a few examples*, to help make writing your next one easy!

First Things First...

You must own the fragrance. Sniffing a friend's fragrance or having a squirt at a perfume counter does not make for giving the product a fair review.

So what else needs to go into a fragrance review that will get our moderator's tick of approval?

The Product Basics.

Do you own the EDP or the EDT? What size is the bottle? Was it a gift or did you choose it yourself? Is it a scent you choose to wear daily? Or is it saved for special occasions? How long have you been wearing it? Would you buy it again?

MarinaCulibrk - Dior Hypnotic Poison

The (dun dun dun duuuuun) Scent.

Describing a scent can seem daunting, but it's truly not. You just need to be descriptive, but keep it simple. So ask yourself, what sort of notes does it have? Is it sweet? Floral? Musky? Fresh? Zesty? Does it remind you of anything else - say caramel lollies, or candy floss, incense or freshly squeezed orange juice?

The Bottle.

Tell us what you think of the packaging. All we need is a simple line or two. Did you like it? What did you like about it? What attracted you to it in the first place? Did it influence your purchase?

Charmmy-Kitty - Lancome La Vie Est Belle

Price.

Quite simply... is the product worth the price tag? If it cost a lot does it last as well as you'd expect? If it's cheap and cheerful does it do the trick but need reapplication regularly?

Put those four simple elements together and you've got yourself the perfect perfume review!

Sooo... do you have a fragrance you need to review?

Now's the time to take what you've seen here and wow us with your reviewing skills!

I absolutely love perfumes! And I definitely have a lot of opinions on them I really should start thinking about the packaging when I am reviewing them.

These are great tips, thanks BRKellie. I always struggle to write perfume reviews. I have quite a few on my 'to review' list but I always get flustered as I'm not quite sure how to start off. This is super helpful :-)

I don't generally wear perfume, but Anais Anais is a nice floral one that I wear occasionally.

I have lots of perfumes but don't wear them all the time nowadays. I have to put in a plug for Si - it's new to me and I love it.

It is tricky writing reviews though, because I can't comment on 'notes' - they mean nothing to me.
