How do you choose a scented product?

Imagine, if you will, sending a stranger to do the groceries.  You tell them you need a new shower gel, bubble bath or soap.  Chances are they're going to ask you one question - "What smell?"  (or scent, fragrance, type, flavour - depending on the person.)

We all know scent is a personal thing - what smells great on one person, might not smell so yummy on another.  And what sounds like the best scent ever to you, may have another question your scent-sanity.  When we hit the beauty aisle in the supermarket The Husband goes in to sniff test overdrive.  He will not buy a personal care product unless he has sniffed it first.

When these amazing Essano Body Washes arrived at BRHQ the crew was divided, between those that absolutely had to sniff-test a product, and those that could go based on the name.  Tabby was set on the importance of smelling first.  Sure she loves the scent of Jasmine, and she quite likes figs, but was 'adore' the body wash for her?

Me? Yeah, I just go by reading the bottle.  I know my pick is Bliss.  Coconut, Frangipani and Paw Paw - it's going to be tropical-fruity right?  And I'm going to love it!

Like all Essano products these body washes are free from everything you probably want a body wash to be free from.  Cruelty, parabens, sulphates, silicones, GMOs and mineral oil among many other things.  Another huge benefit to Essano products?  They're readily available at your local New World and Countdown, who doesn't love it when you can write a beauty buy off as a grocery?!

There's three beautiful variants to choose from in the Essano Body Wash range:

Calm Manuka Honey Sensitive Body Wash - Active New Zealand Manuka Honey is blended with exotic Australian rainforest botanicals to deliver a soothing, gentle formulation, perfect for even the most sensitive skin.

Bliss Coconut Oil Lightly Moisturising Body Wash - The uplifting fragrance of Coconut, Frangipani and Paw Paw will leave you feeling like you’re on holiday, every day!

Adore Rosehip Oil Repairing Body Wash - Infused with the luxurious scent of Jasmine and Fig, this formulation will leave your skin feeling soft, refreshed and nourished.

So why not tell us - when it comes to scented products how do you pick the scent?  Is giving it the sniff test a must or do you go simply on the name?  Do you know what scents you like and stick to them?  Or do you live life on the edge and opt for something completely unfamiliar to your nose?  If given the choice - which Essano Body Wash would you choose?

I go by the name, the description of the ingredients, and what they stand for/what the product promises. I quite like matching an ingredient to something that is also in one of the perfumes I am using at the time too. I find this method works - there's not many scents that I don't like - variety is good, I almost never use the same body wash again since there's just so many options. My flatmate had the Adore scent which I tried and loved, but I think I'd most like to try the Calm - my skin is quite sensitive, especially going into the colder months where I blast it with water that's far too hot.

Goodness me! Who on earth doesn't spend 15 minutes in the shampoo/ body wash section of the supermarket smelling all the bottles!?? Haha. Especially when it comes to body washes - smell is KING! I'd probably buy something that smells incredible long before even finding out whether it does the job. Haha. Guilty. When I read that the moisturising body wash is scented coconut, paw paw and frangipani :O ... off to the supermarket to have a sniff around! Haha

I can tell by name alone. Typically, as long it the scent isn't citrus or tropical related, I'll probably like it. For example, Bliss sounds like I'd hate it. Coconut? Yuck! On the other hand, I think I'd adore Adore for its jasmine and fig.

I am a combination of both , If I like the name and cannot smell at purchase and I know the product I will buy on name alone however I prefer to smell first.

Oh I am that girl in the supermarket that smells the shampoos and or conditioners before I choose one! come to think about it I am lucky I do not get told off. They all sound great! I think I would choose bliss but they all sound so good that it would be a tough one I like to mix it up bit and have a few open if I can depending on if the shower is to wake me up or calm and relax me. Being a mum a shower becomes part of my me time to myself.

I must sniff scented products before I buy! Perfumes, shower gels, moisturisers, etc..

I hav to say a sniff test definitely has to be done for sure cause I'm very fussy with body wash an stuff however I find that if it has coconut in it I so far hav absolutely loved them so this would absolutely tell

Do you know I'm guilty of both. One because I often shop online and the other is when I do purchase in store I will take the sniff test. Adore, calm., bliss are nice names but to ensure they're up my alley reading the ingredients and the scent tones for me what's appealing in the description is bliss the scent of coconut arrrhhhh appealing. However if judging by name alone I'd choose Adore.

Yip definitely not afraid to take the lid off and have a sniff. I like citrus as it is energising and coconut because it reminds me of my sister's old coconut oil she used to slap on and sun bake with....Not very pc now!

I definitely are swayed by the scent of things but can also be swayed by what the bebefits of a product are or if they are suited to what I want them for. These all sounder amazing and I would pick calm because I've been having a stressful time lately but then I would also pick adore as my skin would benefit from the roswhip oil

I mostly go by scent, it has to smell pretty good because doesn't this give you an indication of what you'll smell like after? But in saying this I also have my favourites like coconut, vanilla, berries. Sometimes I have risked it by just the name thinking they'll smell real, and sometimes that's been a bad choice they end up smelling like a toilet freshener :-P Usually the cheap products. This sounds amazing though, so I would go for the Bliss Coconut Oil!

Hell yes, you have to do a sniff test first! I think we have all been the victim of a horrible smelling body wash that you absolutely do not want to put on your skin.

I generally have a favourite, but if I can't decide, I will try one, then get the other next time. It can be fun to change it up.

I'd have to go probably for the "bliss" scent. I'm a sucker for fruity or tropical smells.

OK not going to lie, I already have the Jasmine & Fig one in my shower as Essano is my absolute FAVOURITE brand! I can confirm ALL of these shower gels smell amazing, even though I have only used the one above, I have done the "sniff test" on all of them. I better not be greedy by asking to trial one, but honestly gals, you won't be disappointed! x
