Do Your Beauty Standards Slip in Lockdown?

by BR Kellie

As I write this it's day three of Level 4 lockdown. My kitchen is spick and span. The washing is up to date. And I haven't brushed my hair in three days, let alone put on a speck of makeup.

My beauty standards haven't so much slipped as gone awol.

What's interesting to me about this is that last year in Level 4 I put on makeup religiously. Didn't miss a day. My friend and I would zoom and the colour on my lids was often a brief point of discussion. I used Level 4 as a reason to try colours I wouldn't. I got creative. Had fun with it. My hair was washed, brushed, straightened. My skin was cleansed, toned, serumed, moisturised, masked once or twice or week. My beauty standards were as sky high as ever.

This time? It's a big old 'meh' from me.

Which is crazy, right? Because if anything now's the time to invest in ourselves. To take that extra moment for a full body moisturise, rather than a half-hearted slap it on the ankles and shins because that's the bit that people might catch a glimpse of as I slub around the neighbourhood on my daily meander. Now's the time to sit back with a mask on and listen to an audiobook. To be pulling out the fire engine red lipstick, slicking it on and vacuuming the house for the seven billionth time while feeling a million dollars.

But no. Not this lockdown.

I asked the BRHQ gals how their lockdown looks were going, and it turns out we're all pretty much in the same boat. Usually a primed and preened lot, they've abandoned their makeup brushes and setting sprays in favour of cleaning brushes and disinfectant sprays. They've downed their hair tools and picked up actual tools. DIY beauty has become actual DIY. Greasy hair is in, bras are being abandoned. The only semblance of beauty self-care they're embracing is skincare - they're masking up both in and out of the house.

2020's Level 4 lockdown was all about creating a semblance of normality in a crazy time.

2021's? It seems we've embraced our new normal.

Which brings us to this week's poll...

Has our latest lockdown seen your beauty standards slip? Have you broken up with your makeup? Or are you rocking a full face? Is skincare your new self-care or have you gone back to basics?

Yes and no. I've been enjoying living in my PJs but also online shopping for more beauty stuff!

Ok I’ll admit I’m using this as an opportunity to go as many days as possible without asking my hair lol.

24th August, 2021

I'm doing nothing except combing my hair, washing my face, and putting on my facial oil. Oh and the odd egg white mask of course.

Wearing a mask means I only do my eyes, and at the moment, that only consists of a bit of mascara when I have to pop out for essential items. I have to shut my business during levels 3 & 4, so I’m concentrating more on skincare, just like I did last lockdown. My skin looked and felt amazing after going make-up free for four weeks last year. I want to try get that plump, hydrated, well nourished skin back again, while I have the time.

I love having so much time to spend on skincare and I think my skin is enjoying having a break from makeup. This time I’m zooming less and when I’m out walking wearing a mask anyway so hardly anyone sees me.

This time around I'm struggling with my mental health a lot more compared to last lockdown... So my health and beauty standards have definitely slipped.. but we've got to get back up there right! I'm finding beauty review and commenting on here to be very helpful to me, and help get my motivation back up there!

Skincare regime is still the same. I’m teaching online so I still put on minimal makeup for video calls otherwise I wouldn’t bother. I’m seeing it as an opportunity to use some items that I don’t normally use.

I've stopped wearing makeup but I'm being a bit better with my skincare routine

My usual cleansing/moisturing standards have slipped a little as some days I only wash my face once a day instead of twice but probably because I'm not wearing make-up at all and if I'm going outside, I am still putting my spf sunscreen on. And there was one day that I didn't shower either!! But only because I was washing the sheets the next day and also because I live alone luckily. I have planned on lying back and popping a face mask sheet on but I haven't sat down long enough to do that yet. Fitwear or my painting clothes are my choice of attire at the moment. Stay safe everyone

Wearing my trackpants as usual , no make up , and trying to do my training from home so far I'm doing pretty well! I have not binge and not going crazy on the baking haha shower everyday as I exercise ! I hope everyone else is doing good , keep safe everyone !

I have barely gotten out of my pjs this lockdown! Lol the only thing I must do daily is shower and brush my teeth otherwise I just feel manky.

I normally don’t leave the house without brows and mascara on but (going to the supermarket and a daily walk) this time around I’m completely bare faced except my usual skincare and SPF. I have however spent sometime trying to improve my eyeliner skills.

Skincare is maintained as per usual. This time I'm working from home and don't see the point in putting make up on. In saying that, I don't have a work web cam which I'm sure will be coming in the next couple of weeks. I'll probably make an effort then.

I'm about the same as usual - although I went to the dentist just before we went into lockdown so now I have no excuse not to get into better flossing habits! Having a bit more time on my hands means I can do a good clear out of stuff I don't use and maybe even paint my nails which I barely ever do!
