Could You Marie Kondo Your Makeup Stash?

The release of Tiding Up With Marie Kondo on Netflix has take the woman who took the world by storm with her ‘spark joy’ philosophy to the next level and introduced millions more to her KonMari Method.

In case you've been too busy enjoying the summer sun to get your KonMari on and are wondering what the heck I'm on about... The KonMari Method is a way of tidying where rather than going room by room you go category by category – say for example, you’d start with your clothes, then go to books, then accessories etc. In each category you make a point of holding onto every item with both hands to see if it sparks joy within you. If it does, you keep the item. If no joy is felt, you toss it.

Back in 2016 I spark joyed my makeup stash... and failed to get rid of any of it - well, apart from some gungy lipsticks. It's safe to say thought that the last three years has seen that stash balloon even further. So once again I decided to hit up my stash to see what joy could be felt, or not - this time with the intention of getting rid of that which did not give me a case of the happies.

First up I pulled my eyeshadow palettes – all 24 of them. (Fun fact: In 2016 I thought my collection was large with eight palettes. Gulp. I think I need an intervention, haha.) Interestingly enough 11 out of 24 succeeded the ‘spark joy’ test. All my ABH palettes made me smile. The KKW X Mario got a scowl. A Smashbox palette didn't make the cut. A Covergirl palette did. Charlotte Tilbury - no. Ciaté - yes.

Out of four foundations one sparked joy while the other three did not.

Next I decided to spark joy my 52 lipsticks. (This was 30 back in 2016. I'm a makeup monster! Someone get me a spot on hoarders!) 20 survived the spark joy test. TWENTY. Which had me wondering... why am I holding on to 32 lipsticks I'm NEVER going to use?

And so I went, separating the stash into yay or nay piles. The whole time wondering why I kept onto so many products that I was very unlikely to use. In the end the stash would have been more than decimated but not quite annihalated.

Did you catch the 'would have' instead of 'was'?

Thing is, once again, I couldn't bring myself to part with all the pretties. Two of the foundations, yes. They were old and looked terrible on my skin. But the lippies? The highlighters? The bronzers? If they were from the dark ages and smelt funny - out they went. Despite not liking 13 of the eye palettes I could only bring myself to get rid of the ancient ones. The rest I could not part with. Which is ridiculous, I know. But I like to play. I like to swatch. And, to be honest, they'll probably eventually end up being given to my daughter to play with, or she'll use them as art supplies - but for the time being I just like to look at them, to know they're there. And that sparks joy in me.

So tell me, do you think you could ‘spark joy’ your makeup stash AND toss out the less than joyous products? Have you already done so? What were your findings? Chat away…

I could try!

7th February, 2019

I have two makeup drawers that I need to reduce to one, yes definitely need a clear out.

7th February, 2019

I've been having a bit of a sort but only throwing away things that are really old. I find it too hard to bin items I have hardly used even though I won't use them again. I always have at the back of my mind I will.

4th February, 2019

I definitely need a clean out there’s a few make up items sitting.

2nd February, 2019

I KonMari my makeup by actually using it, and if I haven’t used it in ages or it’s old, out it goes. If it’s new or tried and rejected, I give it away

2nd February, 2019

My makeup collection is definitely a bit out of hand! I need to do a cull myself. But it's hard as I'm a makeup collector/hoarder!

2nd February, 2019

I’ve been just this morning trying to breathe new life into old products so that I’ll use them again.

I don’t find the spark joy method works for me, but I’m trying to use up or repurpose old products.

I really love the idea of culling my make up collection but then always get stuck when I think about how much I have spent on few products. Sure on I longer love Velver Teddy by Mac but that lipstick cost me $40 and just can’t bring myself to throw it away.

I haven't done the actual "thing" but a couple of years ago I cleaned out my lippy collection. I ended up giving 30 away....somehow I have replaced them all ( with a few more) I just cant!

Nope, I couldn't......

31st January, 2019

I haven't really done a spark joy test but I did clear out a few makeup items a couple months ago to give to a friend most of the stuff was siting untouched and so although it was pretty I knew I'd never use it up, mainly cool toned eyeshadows which aren't my preference anymore since I looove warm toned ones (funny because a few years ago when I was heavily collecting them I really didn't like warm tones, I liked eyeshadows that were as cool toned as possible). I did also give her several of my blushes not, because I don't like them (it is one of my fave makeup products) but because I know I'll never get through them all. I did give away a few of my lippies and threw some away. Also tossed out a very expensive foundation that's not right for my skin type and doesn't match my skintone.

I have already done a massive clean out in my makeup drawer and pretty happy and satisfied with what I have left.Next to de clutter is my wardrobe.I can see a lot of stuff being given away to charity or friends.

31st January, 2019

Hym.. i’m not sure if i’ll have anything left then hahahaha =D

31st January, 2019

This is such a great idea I definitely want to try this to start the new year with a big spark joy on everything in my house...time to clear clutter....just not ready to get rid of all those lipsticks either but I never wear them it's strange

29th January, 2019

I had the exact same results as you!! I separated joyous from non-joyous, only to feel my little aching heart pull me back into keeping some products I really don't need. Oh well - maybe that's all part of the 'spark joy' process.
