REVIEW EXPERT

About Me A youthful 50 something year old in attitude and appearance. My day job is a teacher. When I'm not being a teacher I'm busy creating with paint, fabric, furniture, plants, food and writing. I'm a Libran girl hence my love of beauty products - skin care, body care, make up and good smells. I love makeup, I wear it everyday and absolutely adore getting glammed up. I have been known to entertain friends while having bubble baths complete with bubbles in hand! Am dedicated to skincare morning and night but not very clever with my hair. Luckily it's long and thick but sadly dead straight. I have a early teen daughter who is just starting to show interest in make up and hair. Fun!

I've found my new love (& it wasn't on Tinder!)

Confession time! I love matte lipsticks mainly because... i’m lazy! I can’t be bothered doing the top up every 5 minutes so me and gloss just don’t talk at all.

Trouble is with many liquid lip paints/sticks you get that ‘bah bah bah’ feeling when you rub your lips together, you know when they’re super dry (a bit like the roof of your mouth the next morning after too much wine!), so I set out to give this baby the ‘bah bah’ test.

I chose the colour “dreamer” which is a lovely nude pinky shade. The product has a sponge applicator which I liked (rather than a brush) and one dip gave good coverage and it went on really easily.

It dries in about 60 seconds and, here’s the crunch... (wait for it), it literally didn’t come off for 8 hours! I am NOT kidding you! No fade from the edge of your lips leaving you with a bath like ring around your mouth. I gymed, it lunched it, and drank coke’d it and it didn’t budge much from the initial application!!

What is this witchery?

And did it pass the ‘bah bah bah’ test? (Actually i’ve got it on as i’m reviewing it). You betcha it did! So it’s a big fat 5 from me!

Tips: Go get yourself one! Actually two!! I'm off to check out the other colours!

I Love How Long My Eyelashes Now!

It’s finally here! The Mystery Mascara has arrived in my letterbox today! I quickly unwrapped the packaging and try this on! It has a nice, long, and slim brush, making it very easy to apply the mascara on my eyelashes. I have very short lashes so it’s not that easy to put mascara on. I had to use eyelashes curler and sometimes after a while, my eyelashes uncurled and back to the original shape. With this new Mystery Mascara, I have had it on for the whole day and it still maintains its curl. And the great thing about this is that it’s waterproof, so I don’t have to worry it would smudge and made my eyes looked like a clown.

Now I can’t wait to know what this Mystery Mascara, so I can go to get one! Love this Mystery Mascara!

Tips: Wriggling the brush while applying the mascara to eyelashes will even out and thickens the lashes. You don’t need eyelashes curler anymore!

The Perfect Powder Brush

After my much-beloved Revlon powder brush of 4+ years finally gave out, I turned to Beauty Review to find an equally good alternative. Was amazed at the staggeringly good reviews for the e.l.f Kabuki Face Brush! So I've given it a go, and wow. This brush totally earns its high ratings!

It's super affordable and from a cruelty-free brand, which is awesome to begin with. The brush itself is the perfect size, big enough to sweep powder across your face but small enough to be more precise with highlight or bronzer if you want. The bristles are SO, SO soft, it's amazing. I don't really understand how exactly the bristles are antibacterial, but the brush is so lovely on the skin I don't really mind. Zero bristle fallout too. Definitely recommend.

I have the Revlon powder brush and had to stop using it as it created a static type feel on my skin. Recently bought the Elf and like you use it for bronzer, blush or powder. Fab price!

Cheap and excellent quality.

I have had this kabuki brush since 2014 and I still use it regularly for buffing setting powder into my face.

It is densely packed and feels lush and soothing against my face. In the first year, it didn't shed at all. However, recently, some of the brush hairs have begun fall out during washing. That said, it's probably because of its age and nothing concerning since it is so dense in the first place.

I love this brush and it's definitely a high quality staple in your kit. 10/10 would recommend.

Tips: 1. It's only cheap if you get it from iHerb, not Kmart.

I bought this recently based on the reviews here and am super impressed. Especially for the price!

My alternative to microbladed brows

I’m not a suitable candidate for microblading and this product is the next best thing for me. I’ve been using it for 4 months and I absolutely love it. My sister bought me the Dark Brown shade from Australia for $AUD25 which I thought was utterly ridiculous for 5ml but aside from a few clumps of product here and there it’s still going strong.

What I love about this product is that I have 3-4 days of freedom from filling my brows and that my brows actually look good! Of course they look nothing like microbladed brows but they look natural, nicely shaped and is a fraction of the cost of the treatment.

When I first used the product I used a brown eyeliner to lightly outline the shape of my brows. The colour of the product looks black and in certain lighting you can see the brown but just be mindful it does come off as more of a darker brown/black which is perfect for me.

The consistency reminds me of semi-thick PVA glue and just like the glue it’s easy to wipe off if you make a mistake. Don't allow it to sit too long or you’ll end up with the tint in an area you don’t want. The applicator is a small synthetic brush which is saturated with product so ensure to wipe off the excess.

When applying the product for the first couple of times it felt awkward not using an angled brush to shape my brows but follow the natural way your brows grow so that the brush is not going against them. Ideally you want to be “glueing” (while shaping) your brows down.

I start applying the product in the centre (mainly out of habit) because I want most of the pigment in that area before moving to the other areas. You need to have enough product on your brows so that you can ideally peel it off in one go. I then wait for 15-20 minutes and then peel the product off starting from the end of my brows and c’est voilà beautifully shaped brows for the next 3 days.

The tint is darkest on Day 1 and each time you wash your face you'll notice the pigment lift. My brows fade evenly so it's not like anyone is going to notice that you have brows one day and the next they're gone. By the 4th or 5th day I can either fill my brows in or reapply the product.

If I’m not happy with my attempt then I can always fill it in with powder until it fades but I’ve only had to do that once over the 4 months. I no longer need to outline my brows and it takes me less than 2 minutes to apply. I would highly recommend this product for those who enjoy having some freedom from filling in their brows for a few days.

Tips: 1.If you make a mistake, wipe off immediately with a clean angled brush or finger.

2.Over time you may notice clumps of product, ensure to remove those clumps so that the remaining product doesn’t cling to it and you will have a better idea of when it’s time to pick up a new one.

Thank you Rose - it's an old photo but I shape my brows as closely as I can to that with the brow tint :-) That's great Elise, I hope you love it just as much :-)

Very helpful review. I will definitely be keen to give this a go!

Products!!!

Fabulous review and your brows in your photo look fabulous. My brows are shocking, I am growing them back in so they are currently unruly and microblading is out of reach of my current budget. I think the Maybelline price is ok compared to other prod

My skin liked these products!

Prior to this review I had used the serum before, but none of the others.... I changed completely from my usual routine

Serum: The first morning and night I put this on I got a very slight tingling to it. It went on very smooth and my skin felt fantastic. Over time my complexion has definitely brightened and looks clearer with use. I LOVED the previous serum and this one doesn't disappoint either.

Eye-cream: I love the applicator. I've had another brand of eye cream with the same applicator and I love it. It feels cool on the eye area. The actual tube it’s in is quite firm and I felt I had to squeeze well and truly to get product to the applicator and sometimes I'd then have too much product - so recommend storing the tube on its lid on sloped towards the lid to have the product waiting when you squeeze. Eye area wrinkles and puffiness aren't a big problem area for me, but it was a lovely product on and certainly made the eye area feel moisturised and soft.

Day Cream: this one was a problem for me - it goes on lovely, and is super nourishing, and you definitely don't have dry skin, but it felt greasy and extra shiny..... and that was fine except when it came time for makeup, and using a BB cream rather than foundation I found the BB cream slid around my face and caked in places - I'd have to use my fingers to smooth it out and powder to de-shine me.... The BB cream is a separate dilemma for me so maybe a different one would work better for me - but it was probably my biggest issue with the products for this review

Night Cream - YES! A nourishing night cream/mask that my skin LOVED! IT is heavy, but it is a mask, but with that it is super nourishing and from Day 1 I woke up with lovely baby soft skin, that with time looked smoother and clearer (likely a combo of serum and the cream! With having the night mask in my routine, I found I was less critical of the dryness of my skin during the day which was a big flaw in my previous routine as I always felt dry and aged by the end of the day - obviously I didn't have the right night product until now. I really like this night cream and will keep it in my routine.

I enjoyed all of these products - some more than others. The night cream was probably the big win for me in helping with my on-going dry skin – it turned around my skin very quickly. My skin overall has a much better texture and is super soft. Without makeup, it looks brighter. I'd possibly switch out the day cream for another, it just left me feeling to shiny/greasy - but I didn't feel I had dry skin end of the day so it certainly does its job.

I will say re. packaging that the day and night cream containers are so heavy! I dropped one into the porcelain sink and thankfully it didn't break and the sink lived too, but I was worried! Very attractive looking packaging etc. though. Have always liked the serum pump bottle.

If you are particularly bothered by dry, ageing skin I think these products are a great regime to change that!

Tips: Store the eye cream on the lid or sloped so the product is in the lid when you use it.

Give the Day cream some reasonable time to soak in - I'd do my skincare then go and get dressed etc. and maybe dry off my hair before doing makeup to let it really soak in.

The serum is a Must-Have in any regime. I've always liked that product and it's got great ingredients to keep your skin looking fresh and bright and it lasts a surprisingly long time!

That's true - the humidity/heat has probably been a bit of a factor - I did just this week switch to the Chi Chi BB cream raved about on here and it worked much better with the day cream

I have the same issue with the day cream but only since the weather got hotter!

Huge Hits, Huge Misses

Review disclaimer: This was a BIG review and to be as fair as possible to the products, I shelved my regular routine and didn't add in any new products just so I could gauge the effectiveness of this line alone.

Serum Oh my gosh. My skin loved this. Two pumps, twice a day and my skin was just drinking it in. Doesn’t smell too bad, and does make my skin feel amazing straight after application. The texture of my skin did improve slightly, but I also starting breaking out.

Day Cream Not offensive and probably a bit heavier than I’d like from a day cream. No SPF which is disappointing as over the summer holidays, I gave my skin a break and didn’t wear any makeup. I would say that yes, my skin is firmer, but marginally so. A thick-ish cream too, so not my favourite as I like my creams to be super lightweight. Merely a personal preference kind of thing.

Night Cream For two weeks, when this cream went on, I wanted to claw my face off. Its not so much as a cream, but a moisture mask. I despise heavy moisturisers every night. The texture is kind of like a jelly/cream; smell not offensive, but its so thick and heavy. Every morning I woke up with the Exxon Oil Slick for a face. It is just too much moisture. It’ll have its place, like after an AHA peel where you want to get as much moisture in to settle the skin as possible, but every night, its a nope from me.

Eye Cream The bags under my eyes are Chanel. Or at least, I wish they were. This was the only product that gave me the most noticeable results. Whilst my wrinkles didn’t get zapped into history, they certainly were slightly less visible and my skin texture certainly improved. Even a wee dark spot beside one eye has started to go away as well. The applicator is bizarre and with my bad eyesight and a mirror far away, I got it in my eye once, so resorted to using my fingers for application.

My review was similar to yours except I didn't like the day cream but found the night cream to be ok. I liked the serum and loved the eye cream and the same as you feel, this is where I have the best results.

Mmm...That's Nice Sweet Orange and Clove Body Care

Great product, just not my scent! But I thought I should take it upon myself to review the product based on their performance rather than the smell. Ingredients for all three look quite natural which I am stoked about and lets just take a moment to look at the stunning packaging! A TUI!!! It’s so beautiful! especially with the gold accents and I love the cardboard tube that the roll on perfume comes in, so functional for the handbag!

The roll on perfume - The scent doesn’t last long however which is a bit disappointing, but it is quite handy having a roll on perfume for more applications.

Body Lotion – Quite light and soaks in well, scent doesn’t last but leaves skin very soft and non greasy.

Shower Gel – Scent doesn’t last long here either, but certainly does the job with the shower loofah.

Overall the products are great but not my scent at all, it reminds me of a very wintery candle or sitting around a fire drinking mulled wine scent. However my mother absolutely loves the sweet orange and clove scent so she has been using this secretly without me noticing so I am more than happy to give the products to her if she adores the scent!

And i would definitely love to try the other scents they have to see if i like them better as i think the products themselves are great just do not like this scent at all!

Tips: Repeat applications of the roll on are necessary to keep up the scent.

Definitely not a fan of the scent at all!! My mum loves it so was her early xmas present, shes always been a musky rich scent type of gal where is im the fruity floral scent wearer. Id imagine the product would be amazing if it lasted longer :-)

though!

Consistent with EliseMM’s review, imagine if the scent was long lasting! Not for you thougo :-)

Best drugstore dry shampoo

I am a hairdresser so I tend to use professional products on my hair rather than anything drugstore, but beforehand I had used this dry shampoo before and enjoyed it. While it does leave a white cast on your hair which isn’t the end of the world but is something you notice if your hair isn’t blonde, it does soak up the oils pretty well. I found if you apply too much of this it did weigh my hair down, so start with small amounts and build up rather than go too hard and not be able to fix it! It has a decent price point and I do know they have a brunette version (which I haven’t tried) so if your hairs darker maybe give that a go!

Tips: Can leave a white cast on your hair so spray approx 15cm away and leave to let it soak up oils for 5 mins, if there’s still a cast just give your hair a rub and it should go

I tried this once and hated it. After reading your review I can see where I went wrong, applied too much product at once and I’m a brunette. Also the build up made my scalp feel lumpy. I’m almost tempted to try it again...

Sephora Collection Cleansing and Purifying Wipes

I dont use wipes often, usually on those nights when I am really tired or maybe I have had one or two too many wines.

These wipes come in a pack of 20 and they are a generous size. They take it all off! Seriously everything comes off easily and quickly. Ghese wipes leave your skin feeling soft and clean with a subtle fragrance.

The pack seals very well, best one I have used, seals every time and the wipes stay moist until the very last one in the pack.

Tips: I bought these wipes when Sephora NZ online was having a sale which made them a very good price.

I managed to get these on special when Sephora was having a sale

I’m with you on when I use face wipes - normally after a few wines! I’ve wondered about the high end branded ones compared to the baby wipes I use!
