Hi ladies. I am looking for a new facial sunscreen that doesn't leave my face all sticky and gross! Any suggestions are much appreciated. I have terrible sunburn today after celebrating crate day yesterday and woke up looking like a lobster today....bad Lisa! Summer has definately arrived:-)

I use the Skinfood one as a base and the neutrogena beach spray over my makeup and my face doesn’t burn. I like both a lot. Would definitely recommend both! I haven’t tried the Skinfood just as a sunblock though with nothing else on my face.

Cool thanks Trudi. I haven't tried either of those. Will check them out this weekend.

I might try the Skinfood one as well - their products are generally fab.

Also try Mario Badescu facial spray with aloe, herbs and rose water ( or Black Robin ‘whole lotta rosie’ ) on sunburn. Keep in the fridge and spritz on hot skin.

Mecca have amazing sunscreens in SPF30 and SPF50 named 'To Save Face.' The SPF30 gel and SPF50 have a slight tint to them (which is not really noticeable) but adds some eveness to complexion. I also love love love Nivea's SPF30 'Face Veil.' It is only $11 at New World and I have been using it all year!

Apple cider vinegar is good for sunburn. Soak a washcoth in 2 parts water and 1 part ACV and then let the wash cloth sit on on your skin for 15 minutes.

I use a neutrogena face sunscreen which is SPF 50. I have combination oily skin and I don't find this oily. I apply on top of moisturiser and serum and underneath foundation.

I'm really loving Oasis Knock Out SPF 25. It feels really light, doesn't sting my eyes and really suits my skin when it's oily from the heat.

Alternatively I do remember using Neutrogena Dry Touch Sunblock and that one just like the name was light and dry to touch so great for moving on to your makeup.

Did you guys see the article on Stuff/NZ Herald (can't remember which) that over half the sunscreens in NZ failed testing?

Scary stuff so ensure you re-apply through out the day to ensure you remain covered!

I never heard of that article Imoshen but that's scary. Could you link the article here.

Yeah here it is.

It's just saying that over half of the sunscreens sold in NZ don't perform to what they state they do and they aren't regularly tested or meet standards (because they are classed as a cosmetic, they don't need to).

Have a read, it's quite interesting but like everything, take it with a grain of salt.

Snowberry's statement about this is really interesting and worth a read

That's really interesting reading!  It also reflects what NIOD (this is part of the same company that produces The Ordinary products) state.  Just scroll past the information about the product to where they start bullet pointing near the bottom.

Trudijoy - on a side note I really like this picture of you :).

I swear by the natio 50spf one. I have a skin condition that makes me burn super easily and none of the other sunscreens like nivea or cancer society have worked. In fact, they made my face even itchier after. This one works amazingly and is light and non-oily to wear.

Reading through the articles linked, it's really interesting! Although, I don't think it's as drastic of a 'fail' as it may seem. As Snowberry explains, the difference between spf20 and spf 30 isn't like 10 times more burnt.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. Interesting article indeed.

very true charmmy-kitty. I've had so many conversations with people who don't realise that double the spf doesn't mean they can get away with reapplying less often!

Very interesting read. Also I'm surprised that the Cancer Society sunscreen wouldn't meet the testing standards. My favorite sunscreen that I've stuck with is the Oasis Beauty Oasis Sun. They really test their products. I think their spf moisturizers tested highter than the label.

In summer I always use Andalou Face Serum (which is SPF 30 and has zinc, but isn't sticky and gross), followed by Coola which is an amazing tinted sunscreeen.

A skin cancer specialist said the best sunscreens to use are the Ego Sunsense range as well as Neutrogena range.

Thanks Kim. I just noticed my neck is really red. I was up at the cemetary on Saturday - must've been out there longer than I thought!

KiwiLass, tell me about Coola!  I've had my eye on that tinted face product but would rather read the experiences of a real person since it is a little pricey.  Also, where have you been buying yours from?

Charmy-Kitty - check the ingredients on the sunscreens you are using and look for only mineral ones (titanium dioxide and zinc oxide) as chemical ones can be highly irritating to sensitive skins.  I can only use mineral sunscreens but that's great, they provide much better protection.

It looks like it's going to be a very long hot summer, so we all need to be careful. The conversation around products is very timely and useful :)

I have yet to find a face or body sunscreen that I actually enjoy wearing. But you are right, Maree. We will need to be extra vigilant this some.

Trudi I have been meaning to try that Beach spray. It's been on my 'products I want' list since the first time you mentioned it. And the Mario Bedascu spray is great for cooling down. It also takes away that tight feeling if I use a cleanser that doesn't agree with my skin.

Kiwilass, I've used that sunscreen serum as well. I tend to wash my face after I excercise and it's still bright out so that's the cheaper sunscreen I use to make sure I still have spf on my face while the sun's out, the only problem is it stings eyes.

I used to use the Brightening Beauty Balm on my days out in the sun some years back when I was just getting into mineral sunscreens. That stuff is thick and greasy and it's got an orange tint but I remember not minding because I really just wanted to ensure I didn't have more sunspots as a results of walking around and all over on a really sunny day.

They have an untinted one for oily skin but I never got around to trying that one.

given that i had to go and get checked today for suspicious moles on my back, i cann't urge you enough not to burn. Fake it (god bless faux glow) and use allll the sunblock.

Luckily this was just a skin cancer scare for me not the real thing, but be careful out there please.

Good to hear your check turned out ok Trudi. I'm intending to get another mole map done over the summer.

Yes skin cancer is really scary. My dad recently had to have an operation to remove a skin cancer. Not the first time this has happened since he works out doors. I've always had a healthy fear of the sun since the first time he got skin cancer.

I just read this about tea bags:
Allow tea bags to cool after steeping, then place them on sunburns and minor burns
(including razor burn) for relief. If the majority of your skin needs tending,
brew a tea bath and submerge yourself in the cooled-off water.

A tea bath! Now that's something I've never heard of. I have made face mists using green tea before for sunburn.

speaking of sunscreen, not just for your face - genius moment today. i finally worked out how to apply to all of my back!! i simply got the back scratcher, a hair tie and my trusting tanning mitt. boom. i bet it will work for tanning too, but i'm so stoked with my discovery!! i know they sell proper back tanner things but in a pinch, that worked perfectly.

I have been using the mecca branded sunscreen for nearly two years now its non greasy with no pungent smell doesn't interfere with makeup at all or alter your skincare it is however spf30 so when staying out in the sun longer I will still put extra sunscreen on top for like the beach or parks

The mecca branded sunscreen comes in two sizes and I've only gone onto my second tube for the year and that's using the smallest size.. I wear sunscreen all year round.

I'm just about to buy Heimish Glow Base SPF+/PA+++ from iherb, has anyone else used that? It looks good for summer, under makeup/BB.
