No Shampoo - Anyone tried it ??

Ive been seeing this "no poo" movement everywhere....and figured while ive been trying to find new and better products and more multifunctional products i'd give this a go....the theory being that the current shampoos and conditioners we use are full of nasties and sulfates etc etc.  and i have a little bit of inner hippie so thought i would give it a whirl.  Most people think there is an adjustment period for your hair somewhere between 2 -4 weeks where it may go a bit haywire (think oily and revolting)  but after this adjustment period you should have your glorious natural hair back to how it should be.
After you have gotten over the first hurdle of letting your hair adjust then you can cleanse once a week with a couple of different home remedies to get any dirt out of your scalp/hair (theres numerous ones out there) and if your hair is dry there is a couple of different natural conditioner options.

I am on day 8 and I know you are supposd to leave it for those 2 weeks but i just couldnt so i washed once in between with the baking soda mixture (1 tablespoon of baking soda and just enough water to make a paste) scrubbed my scalp (not the ends) and rinsed out and condition with my new favourite product for everything COCONUT OIL ! i only left it in while i finished shaving and washing myself then rinsed it out and my hair feels fabulous.  if its a little dry one day i melt a tiny bit of coconut oil in through the ends and leave it.  i cant believe how great my hair feels i thought i would feel disgusting.

Has anyone else out there given this a go ?????

I dye my hair frequently and got fed up with the colour getting stripped so quickly with shampoos .
So I too , do not use shampoo except the rare colour filter rinse if im going to a salon
honestly , my hair feels and looks fantastic .
it doesnt feel dirty or greasy and has the orginal shine in it .
so stick at it :)

I wash once a week and my hair has never looked better. I am slowly extending the times between washes.

I will say though that everyone I know who does this has long hair. Their hair is amazing btw. I'm unsure how suitable it is for shorter styles.

Am booked in to get it all cut extremely short on Saturday so will let you know in a few weeks how it goes.

I tried that once when I was out of shampoo and money at the same time. My hair was fine and it wasn't particularly greasy and didn't smell unpleasant. I missed scented shampoos though so I went back to it.

I have actually heard of that. My dad would be a big fan of this since he's keen on cuting chemicals and stuff back and only using natural stuff. I would give it a go except for the fact I only wash my hair twice a week and I do treatments on both occasions. I do wonder if the no shampoo method is a good idea for people who use styling products like heat protectors, hair serums, sprays etc. do any of you trying out the no shampoo method use styling products?

I dont use any styling products myself.  but i decided to go whole hog hippy and stopped dying my hair to let my natural blonde grow out....
so  i decided at that point to stop using other products - and limited using dryers and straightners (sometimes you just have to ) ... so im not sure how that would go...im just amazed that its nowhere near as bad as i thought it would be and hopefully it just gets better !!

When my hair was shorter (above my shoulders) I washed it every day. Mainly because I had my hands in my hair more often and because my hair looked a mess every morning. Now my hair is long, I wash it every second day. To be honest, cutting back and skipping one day was really hard in the beginning. I felt.....incomplete hahahah. I cannot imagine not washing my hair often but I think it's mainly because it's part of my routine (and I'm lost without my routine!). Also, I do tend to colour my hair often (I am any hairdresser's nightmare) so not sure how that will go if I decide to not wash my hair anymore.

I say great for those that are better than me, that can change and be happy. I'll be so lost if I had to change now hahahaha. Would keep an eye on this though to see how you're doing and the results :) Best of luck!

I have only been washing my hair with shampoo twice a week for a few years now since reading about its effects on the hair's health.  I do however rinse it and condition it every single day so its clean and treated.  Its a lot more manageable, the colour stays in longer and the cost of buying shampoo has decreased which means I can buy a more expensive (not supermarket cheap) shampoo.
I went on Accutane and due to the drying tendencies, I went to shampooing my hair only once a week.

I now only really wash it with baby shampoo every week - week & 1/2 and I don't condition it at all - I only put my Moroccan oils through the ends.

My hair has grown soooo fast since I stopped, and has gotten past that awkward just past the shoulder stage that my hair never used to get passed.

Thought i would come back and update this....after 3 weeks i have thrown in the towel so to speak....i will admit my hair felt fantastic...and i had no problems with the baking soda instead of shampoo but now that my hair is no longer coloured it made it really really dull so i have thrown it in and am back to washing my hair with baby shampoo and a bit of coconut oil to condition only once a week twice max if im gyming a bit more and my hair feels great.

This might sound really weird and it may also not smell too good but brew up some chamomile tea, let it cool and use that as a rinse through your hair when you've shampoo'd and conditioned it.

I used to do this and it made my blonde hair nice and shiny but gave up because I'm lazy and couldn't be bothered doing it anymore :)

Thought I would update on my short hair. I'm still only washing once a week but that's more out of obstinence than how great my hair is. I think my problem is that I have bought an awful shampoo and conditioner though. I expect once I get past the hump and my hair adjusts I'll be back to haveing loevly hair

I'm keen to try this now as by the morning my hair looks really oily and feesl gross but during the day it's super frizzy! Weird I know. My hair doesn't grow past the shoulders either so definitely keen to see some sort of improvement in the health of my hair overall. So scared to actually do this though so I think I'll start slow. Is the baking soda gentle on your hair? :)

Thanks ladies xx love reading through everyones experiences :)

When puberty hit at high school my hair would do that, be dry then go all frizzy. it wouldnt matter if I washed it once a week or everyday for a week.
I now only condition my hair whenever i shower which is every second-third day depending on how busy I am.
But my hair is at my tail bone and spends everyday in a bun so that might be why its stopped its problems.

This is such an interesting idea. I have heard lots about it, but never thought of doing it myself. However, i have been washing my hair more frequently now, which has left it frizzy and looking a bit crap to be honest! I dont know if i could handle that inital time period without washing, but il deffintily start by extending the period between when i shampoo!

Marizpan it really helps to use shampoo less if you have thick and coarse dry hair, don't think its helps oily type so much.  I use shampoo once a week now and conditioner rinse everyday and the reduction in frizz and lack lustre hair is amazing!  Apart from using sulfate free shampoo the once a week (or twice if you just can't do once a week) clean is what I recommend the most to people with similar hair that it thick, dry and curly.  But I am not a hair specialist and have no training in the field, this is just my observation of experimenting, I have also noticed that when I do wash with shampoo that I don't get that straw like texture after use.

I no longer not use shampoo but I've switched to totally natural solid shampoo bars instead.  I  have tried a whole lot of them and a lot of them out there aren't totally nautral they are just solid versions of the liquid stuff but I have found a couple that really work for my hiar and my hair has never been so healthy in its little life.  I only use the bar maybe twice a week and thats it no conditioner nothing else.  My hair has grown like you wouldnt believe.  It may not be for everyone and I did also grow my hair out so i've stopped dying etc so that probably has a bit to do with it aswell but it definately has its very own shine now :)

Thanks guys this forum has been really informative. As some one who has naturally drier and thicker textured hair it never really occurred to me to just shampoo it less, if it all! I guess part of it comes from habit and the fact it's so easy to buy into marketing that's all about both shampoo & conditioner...I guess I never really thought twice ha.

I find it an interesting idea but not for me. I currently wash my hair maybe twice a week so not to much, and have fallen in love with Lush's Cynthia Sylvia Stout shampoo which looks after it nicely. I think part of the unappeal of it all is I hate when my hair is dirty so I'd never be able to get past that initial phase. That and I'm pretty sure my employment agreement mentions hygiene so very dirty hair probably wouldn't go down well there!

I have waist to hip length hair and I wash it once to twice a week. I did find that Sorbet's St. Clement's bar worked wonders for extending time in between washes along with a weekly coconut oil treatment or a body oil that has mainly coconut oil also works. Lately I've been trying to project pan off the other shampoos and conditioners in my bathroom and I've run out of coconut oil so my hair hasn't been at it's best but once those hair products are panned off my hair care products will be back on track.

This is an interesting thread for me! I'm still washing my hair far too much, almost everyday. I know it isn't the best for my hair but I hate the look of it when I don't wash it. I think I'm going to have to get out of my comfort zone and give this more of a go though, I love the idea of not washing it for two weeks!!!!

I have really fine, damaged hair which gets super oily if I wash it too often- such a pain in summer with all the swimming, hat wearing and general heat. I try to only wash it once every three day and use dry shampoo in between as needed. I would like to try and extend it out even further but often it just gets too disgusting looking for me to bear and I give in and wash it.

I wash mine everyday but I focus the shampoo at the roots by the scalp and just let the suds go through the length on washing out.
I do no shampoo on weekends when I am not going anywhere, I do use dry shampoo during this time but I still end up scratching my scalp raw at times when it is really hot.

Hmm, I too have been reading about it all over the internet. I have mainly been reading about washing with baking soda and rinsing with cider vinegar rather than just using water. I have been trying to wean myself off shampoo use slowly. At the moment I am using shampoo once about once a week and the baking soda mix 6 times a week. My hair is very long and oily and to be honest I am scared! I really HATE having oily greasy hair and I have to go out in public and see people daily so no way will I put up with hideous greasy hair for a few weeks. So far It hasnt got too bad although I cant say I have noticed any amazing difference in my hair yet. It remains relatively tangle free considering the lack of comercial conditioners. I am hoping I will eventually be able to reduce the amount of washing. I get so sick of washing my hair daily and when I travel away and have to camp out for the weekend I ocasionally end up having to skip a shower (eww :P) and the greasy hair really gets me. I cant even leave it a day without looking like a grub. Try anything once right?

I'm really intrigued by the idea but not sure how I would cope with that greasy, itchy feeling!  I've been reading Jenna's blog from Oh Natural which was really interesting.

Just reviving this thread. I am embarking on the "no 'poo" trend, as I want to see if it works and how well it works for me. So far its going okay, I mean I only started today hahahah :P yesterday was my last wash with shampoo. How do you cope with it, if you do the no 'poo thang? :-)

Shaza it'll become second nature if it works for you in no time I do the no poo with just washing it once or twice a week. Good luck xx

Oooh I hope so Chikoboo! Do you use dry shampoo in between? I have a tin of it but I don't like to use it as I find it makes my hair greasier haha. Its a weird cycle

Nothing in between just rinse and conditioner every day but I don't suffer from greasy scalp or hair so don't need to clean it often

Okay, I'll try to withhold doing anything other than condition haha. I'm going to buy a conditioner tomorrow from te market so I don't use up my good one haha

I have quite oily, greasy looking hair on my 2nd day hair. I use a dry shampoo on the day I am not shampooing or conditioning. I don't think I could survive without shampoo

Hehe accident prone, I don't think I can live without shampoo either! Dry shampoo is another story though, I hate how it feels in my hair - maybe it'll feel better in a few days time when my hair is super dirty haha

Dear Diary. It's day 3 of no 'poo. Is it day 3? My hair feels like its day 300. If there was a zombie apocolypse I don't think I could survive, but I suppose this is good training. I could be going mad already but I could almost swear there is less fall out than before - a positive. The negative is that my hair feels stuck to my scalp, but the positive of that is there are no fly aways hahaha. I praise batman that tomorrow I get to wash my hair, oh hallelujah I get to wash my hair. ;-)

I shampoo and condition my hair about  three times a week, I find if I leave it longer than about four days it gets greasy and oily because I have oily roots. I read somewhere that it's good to give your hair a break from shampoo every so often to let the oil from the roots travel through your hair, because remember the hair just past your roots is basically dead. Sounds horrible I know.

Yes MrsO! I have the oily powers too, so I'm glad I get to wash my hair tomorrow. I was going to see how long I could go without washing but I think every 3 days sounds just about perfect :-)

Its probably not for everyone of course :) - but just so you know a year and a half later I only wash my hair once a week with a solid all natural shampoo bar and my hair is 100% better than its ever been in its little life haha..

To be fair, I stopped dying it also and grew out my natural colour I figured if I was going to stop washing it I may aswell go totally all out and stop colouring.  It took a few months for my hair to settle down I used to wash every second day so it was a definate shock to my system thats for sure and for a long while I couldnt stand my hair it felt greasy and lifeless and the colour was revolting I hated it.  But all the articles and blogs I followed on it said to wait it out it does get better and they were right sometime after those first few months it just gradually got better and better and it grew like wildfire ! :)

Sorry for the novel !

I used to have to wash my hair every two days until I took Roaccutane for acne last year. Even 7 months after stopping the medication, I still only have to wash it every three days. It was the most wonderful side effect. It actually feels quite liberating not have to wash my hair so often. Even though I have short hair, it is really thick and a pain to wash. I also dye it red so that lasts so much longer now.

Seeing you started the thread Mila I'm glad you piped up! I hope my hair thanks me for this, even if it is still going to be washed every 3 days - unless its a Saturday or date night haha they're exceptions! I just want it to work fabulously for me as well, I don't know if I'll stop dying my hair, but we will see what happens :-P
