OK ladies.  Challenge time.

I have let my excercise and food awareness slide.  I'd like to lose 5-8 kg by the time I go to Japan in July (public bathing really makes you aware haha) and tone up.

I'm launching a healthy May plan.  My own personal goals are calorie counting carefully (it works for me) and gym 2x/week, walk 2x/week.

There are no strict rules to follow.  Pick your own goals and plan, declare them here, and we'll keep each other going for the month :)

I was supposed to go into the gym today for a free half hour guided visit thing. I have 'moderately severe disc degeneration' in the lumbar region so I have to go see my gp to get clearance first. Needless to say I cancelled but I'm planning on getting on to it soon.

Good luck with your resolution! :)

I'm trying to clean up my act too... have been trying to go for a small run or 45min walk about 4-5 times a week and just eating clean (no processed junk).  I was doing quite well until easter so need to get back on the bandwagon :)

I'm in, after a little hospital scare and now having to take morphine pills until the specialist gets back to me i am determined to better my health. I don't need to lose weight but I definitely need to eat better.
I'm planning on one smoothie a day, get all my fruits in one go for breakfast.
All my meat and vege in take at dinner.
Everything in between will be for lunch, nuts, sandwiches, etc.
And more water, a lot more.

AT this stage I'm about 25kg over weight! I may not look it but oh the joys of deceptive camera angles :P So I really need something like this to keep me motivated. Tomorrow is my partners birthday so I will be starting on Saturday. I want to eat clean! 99% of meals have got to be home made being a student this is where I fail. I want to eat all the servings of fruit + veg and drink more water. Walk 3 times a week and do 2 youtube/zumba/blogilates videos a week

Yup I'm totally in- I have been trying to lose the same 5-7 kilos for the past two years! I seem tp put 2kg on and take it off over an over! I have an operation coming up in the next four months which they will weigh me for (to get the right dosage for the general anaesthetic) so that has terrified me into action!

A neat little gadget has helped me. A Fitbit, my partner brought me a Fitbit charge it keeps track of your steps, distance traveled, tells the time, caleries burnt and even vibrates and brings up the name of someone whos calling you (synced with your phone) and even records your sleep. I only mention this because you can add friends from facebook (which i was surprised how many of them actually had one aswell) and you can create challenges such as a daily showdown and weekly challenges with your friends. This thing makes me so competitive!! 1000 steps behind my friend at 10:30pm i was literally walking around my house so i didnt lose. Not sure if it is everyone's thing because its not very attractive just a black band, but it has upped my game being aware of how active i am being as currently being student and quite lazy!!!
Anyways im in. i joined the gym a month ago so need to keep motivated

I'm definitely in for healthier living!  I started back on the healthyeats bandwagon with all the crazy work hours I'm doing at the moment.  We're working in a remote office, getting lunch delivered and short breaks to eat until we get this done.  It means my gym sessions have stopped, I'm leaving early and finishing late, working weekends and have no time for excercise and I miss it!!!  I've stopped all carbs, taking my own salads and doing my best to convince hubby that quality time with the kids over the weekends need to involve some sort of exercise for me lol.

I'm in! I'm going to try head to the gym 3-4 times a week and stay on track with my calorie counting (it works for me too!). I would really love to tone up and be able to fit back into my jeans a little better <3

I'd love to be in Trudi. I don't have a plan though cos all of my recent plans have failed and the dreaded thyroid is spinning out of control again at the moment, so I feel too terrible to get on top of my diet and exercise! I have started taking a tablespoon of olive oil every morning and that helps a little. My skin and hair feel much nicer and less dry. Small steps...

so your goal could simply be to encourage your thyroid back into check maree! It's a bugger when that happens :(

Yes that's true. Ive upped the meds (yuck - more weight gain) and been applying rosemary oil to my throat. This is the worst relapse I've had for a while.. this too shall pass....

I have the Yellow Diamonds supplement coming to trial, so I'm in!  I need to get back into walking to pick up the boys from school, and cut out the rubbish I've been sneaking in to the shopping.  :)

I'm trying to be more consistent with exercise, I know I feel sooo much better in winter if I get to the gym and get moving! And I'm going to try and get at least 7 hours a night sleep, I've been getting 5-6 hours most nights for quite some time and I find even an hour less and I'm reaching for junk and throwing about the 'too tired for exercise' excuse.

I am defintily jumping on this bandwagon! Even though its especialy hard to get motivated in winter, i really am going to try, and am even just started by making healthy food choices, but the next step is getting active and going for a run before or after work

I'll try ... lol. I downloaded the My Fitness Pal app but the problem with calorie counting for me is that I see the calories and feel like I'm starving myself, and it makes me want to eat more. Its a horrible cycle!

are you on a vlcd shaz? I reset my myfitnesspal to 1750/day. Basically you have to work out your base metabolic rate (BMR) and your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE), then subtract 20% from the higher number and use that (as long as it's more than the lower number).

Sounds like a lot of Maths but there are online calculators to help with that:

http://www.myfitnesspal.com/tools/bmr-calculator calculates BMR
http://www.fitnessfrog.com/calculators/tdee-calculator.html calculates TDEE

for me, my BMR is 1600 and my TDEE is 2250 (ish) so I shoot slightly under my 80% calorie allowance of 1800 and aim for 1750. Usually, doing that I can lose half to one kilogram a week and not be hungry

Okay so I have another question! What do you do if you go out to eat? For instance, tomorrow fiance and I are going to Gengys, which is like the best restaurant ever! But how do you record that? Each meat and vegetable seperately with a rough guess of how many grams it is orrr is there another way?

Shaz if it's a special occasion one-off I call it 500 calories and let it go. Try to order carefully, and don't have dessert (not a big dessert person) but yeah. Special occasions aren't times to be severely counting haha.

Other than that, I'll put the meal in as close as possible. Like if I'm inn a restaurant and I order pasta I'll put the exact name of the pasta dish in but choose something that sounds about right. You get a really good idea after a while and I can eyeball a plate and accurately (ish) guesstimate half the time.

Hmm thats a good idea Trudi. Most of it will be veges anyway - it's like a pick all your food, give it to the cook and he cooks it on a massive hot plate. It's so yum. And I don't often get dessert out anyway haha !

sounds like a teppanyaki kinda deal? Yeah I go out for dinner once a week or so and I try to have a low cal lunch that day, choose carefully, but ultimately call it as close as I can and if it's a special occasion or I just cba that day then it's simply 500 cals lol

Day 1 of May and I'm in a healthier minsdet. Something p'd me off as I was leaving work and I was all 'yay I get to go to the gym and sweat this out'. I hold myself differently when I'm working out, even this early on. I'm also about 400 calories under for the day though, which is bad, so I might be forced to have wine and macadamia nuts hehe

I've recently all but given up sugar. After doing the math and seeing that the medium sized chocolate bunny my daughter was given for Easter had half a cup of sugar in it and being truly horrified I've gone on a sugar math doing spree and I cannot unlearn this crap. I'm losing weight and fast for the first time in years. The funny thing is I've actually relaxed my diet for the most part and am eating bread again and scones most day (my daughter insists on baking them ALL THE TIME and doesn't even eat them what's a girl to do?) and am eating a tonne of fat. The only change I've made is dropping the small amount of sugar I was eating and have gotten myself highly stressed. Hopefully once the stress clears up it turns out the sugar was the catalyst because I have A LOT to lose haha.

This sounds like exactly what I need. I already eat very healthy compared to a lot of people, and often use that as an excuse. However I NEVER exercise. My goals are focused on my water intake, exercise and a little bit of calorie counting. I am going to use the myfitnesspal app to monitor what I'm eating, drink my 8 glasses a day and do at least 20 minutes of exercise a day. xx

I've upped my excercise but eating bread is my weakness since I'm currently have family living with me as well as pasta since it's winter.

Good call Trudi.

Ash, I'm slowly becoming more aware of sugar too. I hate the sneaky sugar!!

My goals:
Go for a walk every day unless I do some other form of exercise e.g. Yoga
Do a little core strengthening every day e.g. a plank
Not eat junk food (I'm looking at you, chips and liquorice!)
Make healthy smoothies most days to get some fruit and dairy into diet :)

Go and see "That Sugar Film" it's out in mainstream cinemas sometime in May. It's a great watch and information aimed at population level, it's also very funny.

I'm in too.

I have my fitness pal on my phone and I try to walk most days. But sugar, bread and pasta are BIG weaknesses.

I love how many people are in! I treated myself to new gym tights, tops, socks, a new sports bra and gym-friendly undies today (thank god for constant sales everywhere) and sorted out a gym kit with shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, face stuff, lotion, bits and pieces of makeup and perfume samples etc from my beauty cupboard, and I've planned my next two weeks and put a gym session in twice a week and once in the weekend for each. I'm usually like that - if I put in a bit of work and make it a project, I commit better. Today was a gymless day, but Carrie Bradshaw said shopping counts as cardio and I'm holding on to that :p I did gym Thurs and Fri, and I'm going tomorrow, Tues and Weds, so it's not a bad effort.

I've hit my calorie goal both days since I started (I started a day early lol) and am on track for today, and my macros are looking okay (need to up the fibre though). Water needs to increase though!

I haven't felt this committed to health since I lost the 30kg so hopefully I'll get to be hot on the beach this summer hehe

Don't worry about it too much BinaryBeauty! You are allowed days like that, just make sure you don't let it turn into a habit (like I have :P)

I started walking a week ago- I think I'll build on that each week. I bought a new bikini in February and it doesn't even fit my butt at the moment! And it's soo pretty I want it to fit me!

Ooh I'm so in! But I'm hopeless at counting calories haha :( I tried before but would always give up and eat all the junk food I can get. Yeah my self management sucks. But I do try to exercise for three or more hours moderately every week.

A week in (near enough) and I've been to the gym 3x last week and going for my third session this week tomorrow. Also went for a 'shopping walk' (totally counts) on Saturday. I've stuck to calories well, eaten really well and improved my water. I don't know if I've lost weight (probs not due to muscles) but I can definitely see changes in my arms already (and feel them in other places). So inspiring to feel that there is progress!
yip i'm in. making lots of small changes, no coffee after 7pm, my partner fixed mine and kids bikes, so small bike rides each day. walking faster pace when taking my girl to and from school,
oh and learning new things. Zentangle art, which is great for mindfulness, coordaniation, and relaxation. also wood carving, which is for time with my partner, physical etc. both help with the mind, so working on mind and body

Ha! Me too on the zentangle art! So good to just let your brain shift gears and focus on something creative. I really need to do something to get a bit healthier - I have been travelling for almost two months now and I just keep ending up eating too much delicious and unhealthy food! For health reasons I'm meant to avoid too much dairy and gluten amongst other things and its just so difficult! But I am making an effort - thanks for encouraging us into the 'healthy kick'! I love it. Good luck everyone! :)
