L'Oreal Paris ELVIVE Extraordinary Clay Range

I was sent the range to review, and I was super excited to try the products - the description pretty accurately sums up my hair situation, but I was sceptical as I’ve never really had great luck at combating the problem long term.

I loved the idea of a clay mask for hair, however I wasn’t sure how to apply it so ended up putting it on my roots like I would if I was dyeing my hair (however usually a friend would do this so it felt weird to try doing it myself!). I’d like if it said how often to apply it, or even a rough guide of exactly how much I should be applying. It’s not really practical to use it every time. When I was washing it out, I never actually saw the product being washed out like the instructions said I would - it made me wonder if I was using enough, or getting rid of it all. It made my hair feel super soft after it was washed out, but then the shampoo left a too squeaky clean feeling which was kind of a bummer. Overall, I didn’t really notice it doing anything, or a difference in the days after using it before the other products, compared to going straight to the shampoo.

The shampoo leaves me with that too squeaky clean feeling. Other than that, it feels like any other run of the mill shampoo, as does the conditioner. You don’t need a lot of either product each time which is great, I found myself squeezing out too much conditioner the first couple of times I used it (I think because of the bottle design). I also found I was left with the same amount of time where my hair felt good enough not to rewash it - every day or every second day at most, which was quite disappointing.

I generally wash my hair at night, then blow dry it until it’s at least semi-dry. I’m not going to try the dry shampoo the morning after I wash it - that would defeat the purpose of even washing it. And I’m not going to start washing my hair in the morning either, I like sleep too much. So I only used the dry shampoo a couple of times, however I found I ended up washing my hair about as frequently as I was before - every second day usually. I really liked that the dry shampoo didn’t leave a residue, however I’m not sure if it actually worked as well as my usual dry shampoo go to anyway.

Overall, I wasn’t as impressed with the range as I hoped I would be. Love the scent of the shampoo and conditioner (it’s a bit overwhelming in the dry shampoo even though it is the same scent), and the sleek packaging of all 4 products. Each product worked okay on its own and together (and didn’t make my hair any worse), but it wasn’t a fix to my oily hair issues. I found they left it in basically the same condition as most other products do. I don’t think I’d buy the range again as there are cheaper alternatives. I was hoping for more - the best features were the scent and the novelty of the hair mask. I felt I could sub in a different shampoo/conditioner with the rest of the range and I’d get the same results.

All About The Clay

I had the opportunity to test out the L'Oreal Elvive Extraordinary Clay Range, which includes the Clay mask, shampoo, conditioner and dry shampoo. Each individual product of this range stated distinctive outcomes by use.

First product used was the Clay Mask. I believe that this mask did as it said it would. It did an incredible job at thoroughly lifting the oil and dirt from my scalp (as i purposely did not wash my hair for almost a week so i can put this to the test). It smelt calming and fresh no doubt the 'Clay' was announced as soon as you open these products. The second was the shampoo in which i did not really enjoy as it left my hair feeling extremely stripped. My hair felt hard straight after rinsing it out and my head did not stay feeling fresh and clean for 72 hours. The conditioner was the savior of this range as it was smooth and allowed me to comb my hair with ease. It delivered what it said it would. On the second day after using the product, my scalp did not feel as the shampoo said it would, so i put the dry shampoo to the test. It felt soothing and i got that hit of freshness straight away once applied directly to the roots. I was disappointed that the fresh and clean feeling did not last the whole day. It did not stop me from re-applying the product throughout the day.

Tips: Do not hold back with the clay mask, be generous when applying to the roots. It works.

Mixed feelings

When I started using these products I noticed a huge change in the quality of my hair right away. I have thick, heavy, long & difficult to manage hair, and my hair suddenly felt lighter, smoother and softer with combined use of these products.

This range really appealed to me, 3 types of clay -intruiging, and the color choice of packaging for these products Is fresh & pretty. These products all have a similar sweet pretty floral smell, the scent is great.

Although the condition of my hair was significantly improved when I started using this range, the oiless of my roots wasn't. I noticed no difference in regards to oily roots, which is supposed to be an aspect of this range..

The conditioner was my favourite of the bunch as it worked wonders on my lengths. The shampoo is nice but didn't make any difference in regards to oily roots. The mask and dry shampoo I found to be rather ineffective.

I might repurchase the shampoo & conditioner, but would leave the mask and dry shampoo.

Overall, a bit "so-so"

I have very fine, thin hair with a slight wave to it which is a little below my shoulders. As a result of my hair type, it gets oily within 12-18 hours.

I will go into more depth on the individual items in the range on their own product pages, but as a general overview I don't feel especially strongly about this range in either direction.

The shampoo and conditioner were the most useful and effective parts for me personally, however, the shampoo was overly drying and the conditioner was overly conditioning. I'd prefer them to "tone it down" somewhat and meet halfway. I noticed the bottles say they contain 3 types of precious clay but do not mention what these clays are or what benefit they provide.

The clay mask for me did nothing. The first time I used it I don't think I managed to wash it all out properly and as a result of the clay residue my hair was unable to excrete it's oils but my hair didn't feel nice so I don't recommend this. I noticed that to properly cover my scalp it uses a large amount of product so the container wouldn't last long.

The dry shampoo I might repurchase depending on price. I like that the scent matches the shampoo (as does the clay mask) and it does a good job of absorbing the hair oils making me not look greasy, however my hair was still limp so I kept it tied up in a ponytail for the day anyway.

Tips: The shampoo lathers up a lot, so a little goes a LONG way.

Ho hum

I was really excited to try this range as I'm always looking for products to manage my fine, super oily hair. Overall I've come away from the trial period with mixed feelings.

With my normal shampoo and conditioner I wash my hair every second day, but on my no-wash days I sometimes need to top up with a bit of dry shampoo in the morning, and I ALWAYS need dry shampoo if I'm going out in the evening of my no-wash day. With the Extraordinary Clay range I found that I never needed dry shampoo on that second day, so it's a big win for me there. But overall I don't feel like the whole range lives up to the claims.

I also don't love how much the scent lingers. It's not an awful scent, in fact I kind of like it, but I strongly prefer hair products that don't leave a scent in my hair at all and this range definitely leaves a fairly strong and persistent smell, which is somewhat 'chemical' ish.

The mask requires such a large amount of product to get much coverage that it feels incredibly wasteful. The instructions also weren't particularly clear whether the mask was supposed to be used before every wash, or as a less regular treatment, so I was a bit confused on that front. When you use the mask it does reduce the amount of shampoo you need to use to get a huge amount lather, though - you do need just the teeny tiniest amount, so that's a bonus.

I wasn't thrilled by the dry shampoo - it's much better than some I've used, but it's nowhere near as good as Batiste so I'll be giving it a miss. It was easy to use and did leave hair looking clean, but just didn't add the same volume or last quite as long as I'd like.

Most of the work in getting that second day to be oil free for me seems to be done by the shampoo, so it would definitely be my keeper of the range. It's quite foamy so I use probably half the amount as I would of normal shampoo (or quarter of the amount if I'm using it after the mask). My only complaint is that it's far too harsh for my tips and the conditioner just doesn't do enough to counter that. On day 2 my tips start getting dry and angry, and if I use dry shampoo to stretch things out to day 3 then my tips are a gnarled mess. However, I like the shampoo enough that I'm probably going to shop around to see if I can find a better conditioner or treatment to pair with it and hopefully counteract the effects.

Which leads me on to the conditioner. It was nice enough for the first day, but as noted above by the 2nd and 3rd day it wasn't having much effect on my tips and things were looking pretty mangled. However, whatever the temptation may be: DO NOT USE TOO MUCH. Trust me, just don't! In an attempt to counter the drying effect of the shampoo I tried using extra conditioner and the product was so incredibly heavy in my hair it hung lank and heavy and just was not a fun experience.

Overall, I might repurchase the shampoo if I can find a solution for the dry tips, but I wouldn't be repurchasing the rest of the range.

Doesn't put the Extra in Extraordinary but lovely

I was super excited to try this New Elvive Extraordinary Clay range for oily roots and dry ends but for me these products, the Detox clay mask, Pre-shampoo treatment, the shampoo and conditioner and the dry shampoo didn't impress me all that much. However, I liked the fact that after massaging the clay mask into my roots for about 5 minutes before showering, the pre-shampoo mask actually felt like it absorbed excess oils and impurities in my hair. The flip for instructions were easy to follow on the lid of the container. It had a nice texture, fresh scent and it was easy to apply to my roots. I found it took awhile to wash the mask fully off in the shower but eventually the water ran clear. Following on, I cleansed and hydrated with the shampoo and the conditioner. Both of which, smelt pleasant and refreshing. I only needed a small amount of each. The shampoo lathered up quite a lot and the conditioner was a silky texture and seemed to make my hair feel softer. After shampooing and conditioning, I rinsed my hair and it felt quite clean, not really any different to usually but I did notice my roots, scalp and dry ends did feel fresher and cleaner. After towel drying my hair, I sprayed in some of the dry shampoo and combed it through my hair and I was able to skip a day or two washing my hair after using it. It was quite good to spray in my hair every now and again for freshening up between washes. The product in each bottle and container seemed to last me quite a few washes. The Detox clay mask, I used quite a generous amount of each time I used it so that was quick to deminish out of all four products in this range. I liked the packaging of the products, the aqua, teal colours added to the fresh look and appealed to me. I thought this range was lovely although I probably wouldn't purchase it myself to try again as I found it didn't impress me as much as I thought it would.

Tips: The Detox clay mask Pre-shampoo treatment takes awhile to wash out and you do need to apply a generous amount. Make sure to rinse it completely. ;)

Evenally Split

The products were beautifully presented in mint green packaging, they have a pleasant fragrance and for the most part have a great texture. Standouts: I found the shampoo and conditioner were the only products that worked for my hair. They complimented each other well. Dislikes: The Detox Clay mask and the Dry Shampoo were a bit of a waste of time for me. They didn't do what they said it would and actually ended up making my hair feel and look oilier. All in all I did enjoy testing the products and will continue to use the shampoo and conditioner

Something I was looking forward to but let down

I was so excited about trying this range! As someone who struggles to go two days without washing my hair I was crossing my fingers for good things but this product wasn't for me :(

The dry shampoo did nothing at all inbetween washes, but it smells really nice! Sadly, it's go nothing on other brands of dry shampoo.

I used the shampoo and conditioner with and without the mask and didn't find the mask made any difference to how oily my roots were between washes.

The shampoo and conditioner themselves were nice smelling and the bottles were an attractive addition to my shower, however I don't think I'll be purchasing this range in the future.

However, after reading the other reviews maybe it's just my hair?

Sad face

I've been testing the shampoo, conditioner and dry shampoo in this range for the past couple of weeks, and tried the hair mask last night. I have to say I'm pretty disappointed by the results. The products do a good job of eliminating oiliness at the roots but unfortunately leave my hair dry and almost coarse feeling - an issue I never have with other products. The conditioner doesn't make my hair shiny or help it look hydrated... and the dry shampoo was just a bit meh.

Tips: The shampoo is the most harmless of the bunch. I'll keep using that, but skip the rest.

That's essentially how I felt too :( I felt like it did about as well as most other ranges at eliminating oiliness plus left my hair drier than normal, such a shame!

Did not live up to expectations and claims

I wanted to love this... I really did. I have oily roots and am keen to try any product proclaiming to Sort This Out. The hair mask was off to a promising start (once I realised it wasn't a leave in treatment) and my hair felt really clean. Alas, that's where my excitement stopped, alongside slight resentment at an extra five minutes time in the shower (I'm ever mindful of the price of power!). The shampoo and conditioner was cleaned my hair and left it a bit thicker than usual (read, slighty boofy). The dry shampoo was abysmal, it did little for my oily roots, not sure if I got a dud? Overall, really unimpressed with this range and disappointed as I really wanted to love it!

Tips: The shampoo and conditioner is more or less fit for purpose, I'd use this in isolation - don't bother with the mask and totally flag the dry shampoo...

I felt the same for the Dry Shampoo, did zip to help my hair look fresher, in fact I felt it made it feel wrose. Such a shame.
