Kevin Murphy Color Bug Review

Overall rating:
1.9/5

Kevin Murphy Color Bug In the world of session styling I’m always looking for new ways to change the models hair. Wild crazy colour became the new hot thing but you cant just colour a models hair just because you feel like it. COLOR.BUG is wipe on, wipe off colour!  It’s just for fun and just for the one night. With a towel draped around your shoulders to protect your clothes, I would apply a hair product and then the COLOR.BUG to make it stick.

Colour bugs

I have the pink and purple colour bugs. My first application was so disappointing coloured dust everywhere but my hair. Then I had a look on YouTube and discovered that it had to be set with hairspray, fair enough so I tried that and it stayed in place.

The colour pay off I my medium brunette hair was ok, not the richly pigmented dip dye hair seen on models or adverts for the product though, which is a bit misleading.

Packaging wise I feel this would almost be more suited to a wind up stick than a flat disk as it hits pan after not a few uses.. I have thin fine hair and wasn't going to town on it so that was a bit disappointing too. There really isn't much product for the money spent. I'll use and enjoy it until I finish my colour bugs but will not be repurchasing.

Tips: Set the powders with hairspray so they don't shed all over your clothing. Also look into hair chalking or pastels.. Could be cheaper to pick a few colours you love from an art shop rather than $25 from a salon.

kevin murphy colour bug reveiw

love this product! being a hairdresser ive found alot of use for this product as it washes out and isnt messy to apply with its chalk formula! perfect for little kids, photoshoots, fashion shows, music videos, dress up partys, events, just anything you want to add some colour to your hair without the comitment of colouring it permanently or even with a semi! nice way to spice up your every day look. definatly my favourite chalk/wash out colour product as it doesnt make the hair feel wet or dried out and lasts really well in the hair without it going everywhere and making a mess! also has a very nice selection of colours and they work just as nice on blonde hair as they do on dark hair!

Tips: after aplly the chalk, spray hairspray onto the hair where the colour is to help lock it in, (will still wash out) and then you prevent the colour having any chance of falling out onto your clothes or pillows etc

Useless on dark hair

I bought the gold one of these expecting it to work far better on brunette hair than on blonde. I can run it through my hair for minutes on end and not a dot of colour shows. I am so disappointed with this product I gave up on it and it now sits unused in a drawer.

Not worth the hype

No one tells you that you actually need to put another product on your hair BEFORE you apply the colour bug to help it show up better in the hair, and stay for longer. On brunette hair, its incredibly difficult to show up, and I felt like I got more on my hands and clothes than on my actual hair. Disappointing to say the least.

Dissapointing!

I won the purple Color Bug from NZgirl many years ago. I was super exited to try it out! I originally hadn't believed it would work on my dark hair but after watching Kevin Murphy's video on it, and how easily it worked for him I was convinced it was going to look amazing.. But it really didn't live up to expectations! Even following all the instructions the colour was hardly noticeable.

The product and packaging is really poorly thought out making it so so hard to work with. The casing is quite big and bulky and it looks like there would be quite a lot of product in there, but once you open up the lid there is just a small pan of product, maybe 5mm deep, if that! The product is completely flat to the pan which is then flat to the casing so when you try to rub it on a flat section of hair nothing really happens because the product isn't really touching your hair properly, the only way to really get it to stick is to hold your fingers behind the section of hair and press your hair against the product, which can get a bit awkward, it also results in most of your hands covered in gorgeous bright purple while your hair is still only very vaguely purple.

After using this product twice on only a few sections of hair, I hit pan! I had been applying so much product trying to get a slightly noticeable purple, and causing so much wastage because of the silly design that I used almost the whole thing! It's definitely not the best value for money with the amount of product you actually receive.

I wouldn't use this again and I'm glad I didn't actually fork out $25 to try it out.

Great idea - poor execution

I was really excited to try this through winning one off NZGirl a couple years back. I always used to colour in my hair with highlighters as a kid so was happy to try something along the same lines but actually suited for that purpose.

I got the pink one and unfortunately didn't like it at all. It didn't integrate well into my hair and left powder everywhere. I also agree with Kia that there is really not that much product in there and you do have to swipe quite a bit to get any sort of great coverage. Granted, my hair is brown and it would probably show up better in blonde, but I would have expected better.

Also, $25 for one is just taking the piss for the amount of product that you get.

Overall, I love the idea of the products as a great way to add a bit of extra colour and style to an outfit, especially if you just want it temporarily for a party or night out, but I feel that the execution is poor. I will not be repurchasing and would not recommend them to anyone.

Not worth the bother

I'd seen hundreds of pictures of girls who rocked purple hair, promising myself that one day I could dip dye my hair purple also. So when this product hit the NZ market, I was stoked!!

Sad to say, it was a complete waste of money. At the time that I purchased it, I had dark hair, and I was doubtful of it working, but I watched Murphy himself demonstrate the colour bug on a dark haired model and it worked perfect.

No such results for me. The product is difficult to use and doesn't work.

I did everything both Murphy and the instructions said to do. Wet hair, rub on, seal with heat, and hairspray. I had no luck on my dark hair. The powdery texture ended up 90% on my fingertips and the towel placed over my clothes. The 10% that managed to get on my hair, was very subtle and needed extreme rays of sunlight to show any colour.

I have since bleached my hair blonde, which is much better. The colour is noticeable and lasts 5-8 hours depending on your level of activity, sweating etc.

The product itself is very drying. It draws out every ounce of moisture that your hair has. The dryness of the chalk, combined with intense heat of a styling tool is not a good match for the hair.

There is also very minimal amount of product in the actual bug. It comes in a gold sized, half sphere, and I assumed the whole sphere would be of product which I could rub on my hair. However once you open the product you have a flat 2D surface of a very thin layer of product that has a 3D border around it that you have to work with. You have to push your hair up against the surface manoeuvre around the border to get your hair on the surface, which resultantly is why all the product ends up on your hands. It would have been much more efficient if it had a 3D layer in which you could rub onto your hair.

While it does it's job - on blonde hair - I would definitely not use this product again. It's just too hard to bother with.

Tips: Kevin Murphy used pigmented eyeshadow to colour his model's hair before creating the colour bug. I've used Mac blushes to do a pink dip dye on my hair - which looked wonderful on my black hair and even better on my blonde hair. Maybe try it this way, and save your money.

That sucks this product was such a let down - but excellent review and thanks for pre-empting the questions I had (will it work on dark hair, how long does it last). Interesting tip also, thanks heaps

I never thought of using blush/eyeshadow...what a neat idea. Think I'll give this product a miss. I always liked the idea of them but have currently have dark hair anyway. Thanks for the review :)
