Writer's block? Here's what people want to read in a review

We've all been there - we've used a product, we want to review it (and earn some points for the Beauty Vault) but we can't think what to say!  Well rather than write a review that's not overly useful (and run the risk of it making it's way to the Moderator's desk) you can now stimulate that writer's block with this check list!

For (almost) every product you can discuss...
1.  Consistency - is it thick, creamy, watery, light?

2.  Application - is it easy to apply?  If there's an applicator, is it effective?

3.  Fragrance - what does it smell like?  How long does the smell last?

4.  Coverage - how much do you need to get the job done?

5.  Longevity - does the product last as long as it claims? How does the product stand up against your lifestyle?

6.  Usage - how long does the product last you?  Is it economical?

7.  Price - how does it compare to similar products?  Is it worth the money?

8.  Packaging - is it aesthetically pleasing? Does the packaging work for the product, ie does it have a pump, is the lid secure?

9.  Results - after using the product as specified does it do what it claims?  What results did you see?

10.  What skin/hair type you have - how does the product work for this? Is it suitable for sensitive skin?

11.  Would you recommend it - A great way to sum up a review is to ask yourself, "Would I recommend it to a friend?"

For all trial products sent by us, filling in the tips section is now mandatory.  If you're struggling to think of tips think of how you made (or tried to make) the product work for you.  Did you use a different method to apply the product? Did you use another product to compliment or enhance the results?

Our How to Write a Great Review article is full of great advice to make your reviews useful - and we highly recommend reading it for tips on the whole review process.

Rating Reviews.

Did you know, members can rate reviews - under every review you'll be asked "Was this review useful to you?" and you can choose - Yes or No. You've read the review, now go on - click and rate it!

As always, we'd like to thank all of you for contributing to the site and making Beauty Review the best site for NZ reviews.

Something else you could add to the checklist: background of the makeup/beauty brand. Is it genuine? Is it well renowned? Does it have a good track record?

This is very helpful plus I would like confirmation of good instructions as I felt the Manuka Drs targeted wrinkle filler did not have clear instructions of how to use and what to expect .

Great ideas of what to include, it is hard not to sound repetitive on each review but great to have a structured approach to follow :-)

If you didn't like it as much, it would be awesome if people could note down recommendations they have for great alternatives to help us all discover new gems!

Thank you for the checklist will help when it comes to writing my reviews

This is a good help thank you, and also some of the comments posted.

To expand on the packaging idea - I would also like to know whether the pump/bottle etc is easy to use (I've got some joint issues that make having to squeeze hard a bit painful) and whether you can easily get all of the product out of the container.

Hi, this is very comprehensive, and I like the fact that people can say whether the review was helpful or not.

24th March, 2014

I like how tips are now mandatory. Even if a product hasn't floated your boat, providing a tip such as "perhaps better suited for X" is helpful. Since reviews need to be in depth, the "tips" can act as a bit of a filter, to work out whether or not to read the whole thing. Callous, perhaps, but that single sentence (ish) stops you from scrolling through screeds of reviews to find someone in a similar situation as yourself.

This was perfect! All the basics you need to know :)

Thanks BR this is very useful for writing reviews, when I try to write it as descriptive as possible and re-read it a few times before publishing my reviews, the longtivity I will definitely be adding in my reviews

Thank you for a comprehensive template to use when doing a review. Are you able to post this clearly on your site as a reference. Also I often read your site on my iPhone and it is a little frustrating. Could you change the format for smartphone reading. Or an option to? Also is there a way of reviewing a product is not already on your site? Your selection of foundations is quite small. I love what you are doing. It's great to have others opinions before I buy a new product.

With foundation/skincare products I think it's essential to know what skin type the person who trialled it has, & whether they think it was right for their skin type.

How about a field where you can report a review, sometimes I still see review where people haven't actually tried the product. It would help BR if we could bring it to your attention if it's not up to scratch.

This checklist will be really helpful!

Yes, I agree that's a great list. I hope I can remember all those points when I'm writing a review from now on. I do include a few of those on the list already.
