Would you cut your own hair?

There are some salon results that can be achieved at home.  Waxing, tanning and pedicures for example.  And then there are some things that should just be left to the professionals right? Like cutting hair.

I cannot fathom taking a pair of scissors to my own hair - judging by my colouring-in skills and my un-even picture hanging, I'd be better off taking a set of clippers to my head, than attempting to cut my own hair.  The thought of an uneven and unsightly hair cut is enough to keep any second thoughts away.  I can safely say I never have, nor ever will, cut my own hair.  I will not trim split ends, I will not tidy my own fringe and I will not attempt to shape my hair in any way.

The main reason for cutting your own hair is likely to be the expense of regular hair cuts.  Which is where I've been lucky my whole life, by always knowing a hair dresser.  And by knowing I mean in the family.  My auntie, my cousin, my sister-in-law's sister.  My current stylist is my sister-in-law.  Her salon is literally a 2 minute walk from my house.  Fringe trims, split ends, brightening up my colour - it's no more than a text away.  And yes the mates rates probably add to the convenience.  But seriously, even if I knew no hairdressers, I think I would still prefer to opt for a low maintenance style, colour my hair at home and leave the cutting to the professionals, at whatever interval I could afford it.

So I was gobsmacked by recent chatter on the forum.  I had no idea so many people cut their own hair at home - and not just trimming, but actual re-styles!  So I got chatting to the hairdressers in my fam-bam and asked for their tips on cutting my own hair.  This is what they came up with:

  1. Don't.  To be fair, this might just be aimed at me - I'm not known for my hand-eye coordination.
  2. Invest in a decent pair of scissors.  Hairdressers spend hundreds of dollars on the perfect pair of scissors - they also have them regularly sharpened.  Buy the best scissors you can afford - this is not a job for the junk-drawer scissors!
  3. Start small. Maybe just attempt taking a small amount off of the ends, snipping off your splits ends or neatening your fringe.  Take it slowly - this is not something to tackle when you're short of time!
  4. Remember - hair stretches when it's wet, so take extra caution when trimming wet hair - it may end up shorter than you think!  BUT always keep your hair wet while cutting it for a neater finish. You'll also want to soften the line when you're finished - pull your hair into a hair tie, slide it as close to the ends of your hair as you can and make small vertical snips.
  5. Don't over compensate!  Like your eyebrows, you want to avoid the 'even trap'.  You know, where one looks thinner, so you pluck the other one, which then becomes the thinner one, so you pluck the other one some more, until you end up with no brows?  Do not do this with your hair.  If it's not looking right - admit defeat and go to the hairdresser.  Less you want to go much shorter than you envisioned.

Do you cut your hair yourself?  Why do you choose to DIY rather than see a professional stylist? How adventurous do you get - do you just trim the ends, or do you do proper cuts?  Or are you like Tabby, and refuse to let anyone but a trained hairdresser cut your locks?

I have never cut my own hair and never thought twice too. A few of my friends cut their own hair. My hair is long and it is due for a cut and I might just try it. Why? My hairdresser has moved and I don't trust anyone with my hair. I'd rather it was me that ruined it than a hairdresser. I'll grow it out a bit more so that there is room for error, IF an error occurs!! Looking forward to it - Wish me luck!!

I always cut my hair! I agree with needing good scissors!

Hahahaha this has made me giggle. I am terrible. I have cut my own hair more than I have been to the hairdresser in the last few years. I did recently treat myself to a cut at a salon however and the difference was huge. Seriously my hair is so much healthier. Will this mean I won't cut my own hair again - doubtful. My personal fav cut your hair moment at home was with selotape (straight lines people!) and my mum cutting online the line.... I do not recommend this technique but it worked! hahahaha

I definitely would and I have done it on a few occasions. I think it's ok if it's long and you just want to trim the ends or want to do your fringe, but otherwise it's better left to the professionals.

I have cut my own hair on numerous occasions, and everytime I have had to get it fixed up at a salon :)

Nope I defiantly would NOT cut my own hair I am way to afraid that I would muck it up, I like to leave it to my trusty hairdresser, it's just something I could not fathom doing :)

Oh no. Never in a hundred years would I cut my own hair. I once had a brainwave that I could trim my daughter's fringe when she was little. Not one of my best ideas. And if I had done that to myself . . . let's just say at least it is cute when a two-year-old wears her beanie 24/7, less cute when a grown woman does!

I'm a DIY cutter! I have 2 really good friends who are stylists who won't go anywhere near my hair even if I begged for just a trim! I'm lucky the way that my hair falls that you could never tell if I have done a complete hash job. I don't do anything major, just thin out the ends with a little trim. However if I did decide to go and change the style I wouldn't hesitate to go to the salon.

I definitely cut my own hair! I don't need a super fancy cut usually, just something straight, or refreshing my sideswept fringe, so it's cheaper and more convenient to do it myself rather than having to book an appointment with a hairdresser. Be moderate and research a lot beforehand, and you'll be fine doing it yourself. I do stand by the get-professional-scissors rule. It's just so much easier. And I never ever cut my hair while it's still wet. It just dries completely differently, and most of the time my hair is dry so...why cut it when it's wet?

I am guilty of this, I have curls and I find that the ends get really dry, so I grab the sharpest scissors and chop about an inch off. Can't even tell if it's uneven. For a different style I leave that to the experts :)

I've had a couple of cuts where the hairdresser hasn't quite put enough texture in so I've grabbed some texturizing scissors and chopped in my own. I've also given myself a few fringe trims. I wouldn't go as far as cutting length off or re-styling my hair (the results would be horrendous!), but being able to do the odd DIY touch up is pretty handy - especially when the ends of my fringe are dangling in my eyes!

I always go to a hairdresser. My hair is quite straight so you any unevenness would be obvious. My mum did used to cut my hair when I was younger though and it was fine.

At work if I see a split end while I am at my desk I will snip it off, but thats as far as I wil go! I hate having my haircut though as you never know how much they are going to take off! It pays to be very specific as to how much you want off. If you say '"1cm" - show them what your '1cm' is.

Have only ever been brave enough to do my fringe. Would still do if I had decent scissors! BR is right - scissors can make or break it! I did have a decent pair but my kids got hold of them and that was the end of them!

I do cut my own hair and have been since i was 14, mainly because i used to live in a small town but now its mainly because i cant afford it :(
