Co-Q10: What it is and Why You Need It!

We've all seen them out there, products called Co-Q10 or Co-enzyme Q10, or even just Q10 - but what actually is this weird sounding ingredient?

Well, did you know that all of us have some Q10 already?   Co-Enzyme Q10 (or just Q10 to save some space) is a vitamin like enzyme that is actually present in every human cell.  In short it gives "energy" to your cells.  It helps to the process that converts food into energy and, perhaps more excitingly, it is also a powerful antioxident.

Antioxidants fight damaging particles in the body known as free radicals, which damage cell membranes, tamper with DNA, and even cause cell death. Scientists believe free radicals can contribute to the aging process, as well as other health problems.*

As we age, the levels of Q10 that are naturally in our body decreases, however, the good news is, that you can top up your levels of Q10 in a number of different ways, either by eating foods high in Q10, taking it in an oral supplement such as a vitamin or using it as a topical aplication in a cream, lotion or serum.

There is also evidence to demonstrate that Q10 may be very beneficial when it comes to holding the effects of ageing at bay.  Many of the large beauty houses have research that shows significant reduction in wrinkle depth when products containing Q10 are applied to the skin.

So there you go - the short and sweet version of why you should think about incorporating Co-Q10 into your beauty regime!

What's your experience with Co-Enzyme Q10?  Are you a fan?  Or have you never tried it?  Or maybe you're not a fan?  Get chatting below!

I've never tried it! It'd be good to try something anti-aging though.

I haven't used any products with Q10 but will be keeping a look out for it for future purchases :)

I was using the Nivea Q10 plus anti-wrinkle replenishing pearls but didn't notice any difference. It probably works better when used n with the rest of the Q10 product range. I might have to give it another go.

I'm pretty sure Trilogy has a CoQ10 Booster Oil and eye serum. The eye serum is my fave. I also am using a cleansing oil with CoQ10 by Avalon Organics. I don't think I pick products based on whether they have this in them, I think I look at the other ingredients but if it has CoQ10 in it it's a bonus because more antioxidants is better.

I'm pretty sure Nivea have a heap of Q10 products - which I've used but not really noticed what the big deal is about. But I didn't know what I now know so might be worth a second try.

I actually have been taking a coq10 supplement for a while just for overall health, I'm chuffed to know it will help with ageing also, boom thats a bonus isn't it :)

I have tried Q10 in products and as a straight serum (from Timeless Skincare) but it makes me break out so I tend to avoid it.

You can buy it as a powder and make your own stuff with it from www.purenature.co.nz. They have a lot of great stuff on their website for making your own skincare.

I'll definitely be keeping a lookout for Q10 in my creams now. Any help with the wrinkles is warmly welcomed hahaha

Ohhh I need some Q10 in my life!

Apparently if you have to take statin medication (for cholesterol management), this can deplete your body of this nutrient. If you have the side effect of sore muscles and tiredness, these can be symptoms of low levels.

I'm up for anything that's anti-aging so I'll look out for Co-enzyme Q10.

That is so correct! I have been taking a statin for 4 years and taking COQ10 really helps me. Without taking it my body had aches and pains. This is awesome stuff, I take one a day.
