Things I Wish I knew before I had an Undercut

I say it often.  Live it, learn it.  If you know me, you'll know when it comes to beauty trends I generally fall on the side of 'I'll give it a whirl'.  That being said, I kind of like to know what to expect.  Just so I can fully enjoy the ride.  This didn't happen when I went for the undercut.

I went in feet first, caution to the wind.  Letting my Hairdresser give me the world's highest undercut.  I even let The Husband shave a design into my nape, leaving me with actual skin head lines.  The whole experience was a bit unsettling - so many things I wish I knew beforehand, just so I could be mentally prepared.

I wish someone had told me...

...to be sure, really sure, that an undercut is what you want.  Because growing it out is a pain in the arse.

I was growing mine out the day after I had it done.  It just wasn't me.  And let me tell you, no matter how many clips you use, how much hair spray you spritz, you will always look slightly unkempt.  I mean look at this.  I successfully pile my hair into a messy bun.  I'm left with tufts sprouting out from below.  No one likes a tufty below.  (behave)

I wish someone had told me...

...to expect to become super paranoid about my neck.  I discovered rolls I didn't know I had.

Turns out I have the back-of-the-neck of a fat Vin Diesel.  Which also explains why my undercut wasn't photographically detailed.

I wish someone had told me...

...to manage my expecatations.  I learned that expectations of Ruby Rose will quite possibly end in a Big Boo 'do instead.

Before anyone says I'm being mean - shush.  I love Big Boo.  She is the best thing in OITNB, but come on, her hair is shocking.

If y'all like the feel, touch, look of short hair - good on you, I love it too.  On other people.  In reality as soon as I felt my own shaved patch, I was repulsed.  Bristles.  God even the word makes me shudder.

I wish someone had told me...

...that you'll forget you have an undercut.  My first shower post-buzz was like this.

Where's my hair gone?  Why does my neck feel like Bruce Willis' head?  Why the heck did I do this to myself?

I wish someone had told me...

...that you'll feel draughts you never knew existed in your house.  Scarves are the ultimate undercut accessory.

Collar up.  Turtle neck sweaters.  Your hairstyle suddenly impacts your fashion choices.

I wish someone had told me...

...that if you go for a close shave, you'll probably get an ingrown hair, or five.

Seriously, the only upside to an ingrown hair is the satisfaction of digging it out right?  I can still feel one under my three inches of grown-back hair.  So.  Annoying.

Have you had an undercut that turned a bit underwhelming?  Are you thinking about geting an undercut and keep hearing "just do it" instead of reasonable points to consider?  Or do you love it and rock it?

Oh that actress in the bottom of the article she's very interesting I loved watching her in the series on Netflix. I saw some rock an undercut in polytechnic they really did look fashion toward and edgy

Love this article lol lol. I would not get an undercut but they can look nice on others :-)

I loved my side undercut and would love to do it again.. as for a traditional undercut... still may consider doing it but with a pattern and colour Guy Tang style. Summer is great but winter nope!

I really want to get a cat face undercut. I saw it on Facebook, and I just need to find a person who can do it for me. My hairdresser said that she hasn't done any line work and I feel like most barbers would just laugh at me.

I've never been a fan of the idea of an undercut on me. Sure some girls can really rock it but not me. I love a full head of long locks and I've gotten compliments on my long hair over the years that I don't think I should rock anything less than a full head of hair. I do think the side cut is a better option, my brother rocks that.

I had an undercut in my teens and while it's liberating and cool I couldn't justify it now as the regrowth is somewhat terrible being older I can only imagine it lol

I've never had an undercut and don't think I will. It's not for me

I kinda want to try it but with long hair, so I can cover up the undercut if it fails. But...... so many things to consider and it'll take months to grow back argh!

I think people who get them are brave and its an edgy look that suit some people not for me though

I'm not a fan of undercuts (because I generally like long hair on almost everyone), especially if someone has cut very long hair to get there. I can't imagine how annoying it must be to have to grow it back.

fantastically written article - nope i never have or will consider one, partly because it would grow in grey haha

10th January, 2017

I love the look but not keen on the tufty bit lol.

I can appreciate the undercut on other people, its an awesome look and gives an awesome vibe personality but I honestly couldn't do it.

I LOVE the pics Nat - you really took us on that journey! I would never consider an undercut - have you seen the size of my head!? I don't need to draw more attention to that. The sound of "bristles" makes me shudder too!
