It's no wonder the choices in skin care products are seemingly endless, there are so many different types of skin - dry, oily, combination, normal, sensitive. Some people will stay the same skin type for the whole of their lives whist others will under go skin changes due to age, hormones or their enviroment.
One age group particularly prone to regular changes in skin type are young adults, our under 24s. Our skin type really depends on 3 factors - water content (affecting comfort and elasticity), oil/lipid content (affecting softness) and sensitivity level. Younger skin is more likely to be affected by these things, notably the oil content. Young skin is more prone to excess oil (particularly the T-zone) which is why we generally have more break outs and blackheads before we hit our mid-twenties.
Finding out you current skin type is as simple as wiping your face with a tissue. And by that, I mean, you literally wipe your skin with a tissue. Make sure you remove all makeup and cleanse your face the night before. Then:
Wipe your face with a clean tissue first thing in the morning.
- Normal Skin - there will be no trace of oil on the tissue and your skin will be elastic and supple. You'll have clean and smooth skin, good circulation and a healthy complexion. Don't opt out of a skincare routine if you have normal skin - although it will do well with minimal care, putting the effort in to your normal skin will have you looking fabulous as you age.
- Dry Skin - the tissue will be clean but your skin will feel dry to the touch and possibly flaky and tight. Dry skin tends to be sallow in tone and will wrinkle earlier.
- Oily Skin - the tissue will have spots of facial oil on it. Oily skin can be greasy, thick, coarse, and shiny, have enlarged pores, and tend to break into acne. On a plus point, oily skin doesn't give in to ageing or wrinkles easily!
- Combination Skin - the tissue will have traces of oil coming from your nose and forehead, but will be clean in the areas that touched your cheeks. Generally with combo skin, your cheeks will be prone to dryness and you'll need to use different products in different areas - ie a rich moisturiser on your dry cheeks, but an oil free moisturiser for the oily parts.
- Sensitive Skin. Any skin type can be sensitive, but generally sensitive skin is usually very dry and tends to feel quite tight. It will become inflamed and irritated easily. Typically, sensitive skin develops reddish and scaly areas, can be itchy and tingly, and is prone to breaking into spots. It is the most problematic and fragile type of skin, which needs a very special type of care.
Young skin is going to go through changes - it's inevitable. One month you might find yourself breaking out every day and find your makeup sliding off of your face. The next month you might find your makeup caking and your skin flaking. Until your hormones stabalise and you find yourself with more predictable skin, it pays to know your skin types, and to buy products designed for your young skin.

I am 21, so I would love to try this!! I don't really know my skin type. I did the test above and it didn't match any of the outcomes listed, I could not notice and oil on my tissue and I don't think my skin feels tight, but I guess it is a bit dry. Maybe it's a bit of combination skin. I don't have clean skin, I seem to always have acne breakouts. I do notice that my skin definitely changes with the seasons and I need to change my skincare products when it starts becoming colder/warmer. Yes I suffer from acne, it's the most annoying thing as a 21 year old! I do try my best to eat healthy and I definitely believe beauty comes from the inside out!!
