Top tips to avoid beauty disasters!

Article by BR Tabatha

Makeup.  When done right, you're left looking and feeling fantastic - you can do anything.  Well anything compatible with makeup that is!

You know what it's like, you get a little teary eyed in the cinema and when the lights come up your other half looks like he's dating a panda.  Or you arrive at the beach looking fantastic, only to leave looking like you rolled in a dirty, sandy puddle.  Or you rock an amazing lip colour on girl's night out only to end up smudging it half way across you face, a third of the way through your first drink.

So we asked the Beauty Crew, including resident beauty therapist BR Zoe down and picked her brain for her top tips to avoid beauty disasters.  Here's our top tips!

  1. If in doubt, go for the waterproof option!  Yes it's harder to remove, but seriously, if it's a choice between a little bit of effort at the end of the day or panda eyes - choose elbow grease!
  2. If there's a date, stick with what you know.  If you're preparing for a big night or occasion, don't switch up your skin care in the weeks before hand.  The last thing you want to be rocking is a rash!
  3. Go easy before you take it easy.  If you're jetting off for some sun, don't over do the exfoliating, peels or use of chemicals in the week before - lying in the sun is relaxing, but you don't want to make your skin more susceptable to damage or sensitivity.
  4. On that note.  Always use sunscreen!  You cannot build up tolerance to the sun - just because you aren't burning doesn't mean you're not damaging!  Slip, slap, slop.  And repeat often.
  5. Rip it out early.  Don't pluck or wax if the area is going to be on show the same day!  Bumps, snags, red patches - no, no, no.
  6. No brow game.  Do you ever look at pictures of yourself and think 'Where did the rest of my eyebrows go?'!  If you're eyebrows taper and are disappearing in pictures, try applying a little powder in a similar colour to your brows.
  7. Blend lower than you think you need to!  Blend, blend, blend.  Even if you're wearing a high necked top, ensure you continue and blend out your BB, Foundation, Bronzer etc lower than will be visible.  A bronzed face upon a white neck is just a no no.
  8. Always stop when you think 'just one more'.  BR Nat's Nanna gave her this advice for whisking meringue, but it totally applies to almost every thing beauty related!  It's much easier to add than to remove, so the next time you think 'just one more coat of mascara', 'one more sweep of blush', stop and leave it!
  9. If you're going to be captured on film avoid unwanted shine. Lip gloss can make your lips over-shiny/slimy in photos.  Mineral Powders and products containing things like silica, titanium oxide or zinc oxide can cause flashback - this is where under the flash of a camera  your perfect skin can end up looking like you've been splattered with talc.
  10. Seal your lips!  If you want kiss-proof and smudge proof lipstick you might find the new matte creams last longer.  Although they can be drying, so you'll want to use a good lip balm first.
  11. Don't want orange clothes? Set your fake tan with the hair dryer on cool setting.  Heat will make it run, so be careful!
  12. Random Breakout?  When did you last wash your brushes? Seriously, imagine the dirt and grime on your skin which is moved from place to place everytime you use your brush.  Then imagine how bacteria will thrive on dirty brushes.  Grab some baby shampoo and wash those brushes to avoid unnecessary breakouts!

So there's 12 tips to avoiding common beauty disasters - now of course it's over to you!  Share your top tips with us below!

Love it!

My tip don't do a big cheesy smile while putting on blush cause when you relax your face you sometimes the blush goes lower and looks weird.

I pat/push my blush in the apples of my cheeks and pat/push up my cheek bone .

These are such great tips, I have made a point to check my face 30mins after applying all my goodies to ensure it all is set in place.. I have had a couple of issues of late where my eyeliner has smudged! I definitely need to learn how to blend sometimes I forget all about my neck:)

All really good tips. Its funny I would never think about what kind of effect on my skin using a new product (skin care) close to a special event might have. I was always one of those girls who stored samples up for the 'night before' a date or big event.

Hehe perfect tips for everyone.

Don't use black eyeliner on your eyebrows. It can look too harsh unless of course you have super dark eyebrows

Perfect timing , about to do a fake tan so big thanks for the tip on drying it :)

This is so helpful - I've done the wax thing before, waxed on the same day that I went out to the beach - it left my skin red and bumpy and also left wax residues! I was left feeling super uncomfortable all day and now I know never to do that again!

My top tip is if you're going to be busy or active and your eye shadow has a tendency to crease stick with beige, nudes, taupe and light brown. It makes the creasing less obvious also if I have a busy week I paint my nails with a clear treatment or a nude shade and just aim for a manicured look, that way when it chips (and it will) it doesn't stand out as much, painted nails is not a requirement but neat, manicured nails are and chipped polish looks tacky.

Number 1 is a definite for me.....................using a cheaper non waterproof mascara at the mo due to budget restraints (sad but true) and boy paying for it!! Runs everywhere and stings my eyes!!! :)

Some useful Tips. Definately gonna try these out.

Such good advice! The lipstick/lip balm tip I am going to try, and the fake tan tip was good, too.

This was an amazing article!! And so helpful! I particulary liked the wax rule (seriously people!) if you have a date, holiday or event then you really need to plan these things are best done before not on the day of the event. I also liked the advice of sticking to what you know.... I learnt the hard way that trying a new product the night of going out can just lead to a reaction.... either from your skin or other people hahaha! I would add that the big day before a major event I was told you should avoid wearing make up if at all possible so your skin can breath and you can be perfect for the next day. I often do this before a wedding or a big party when I know I will see lots of people and maybe be in photos ;)

For eyeshadow that creases, find a good eye lid primer. There are some great ones around and they really do work.

I do have a lid primer but I still have problems with creasing. Even with powder prior to the primer, after the primer and after the eye shadow application I still will have creasing sometimes. It'll take longer to crease but it's not inevitable.
