Article by BR Kellie

It’s often reached for in tough times and in times of happiness. It’s one of the first things some people make in the mornings, and often the last thing at night. Black tea, the refreshing, revitalising and relaxing beverage beloved by many. But did you know that tea is so much more than just a liquid of happiness and hope? It’s also an elixir for so many beauty problems from stinky feet to puffy peepers.

With that in mind here are our top five black tea remedies for beauty problems.

1.  Been out and about in the sun too long and managed to burn a few bits or a lot of your body? It’s time to hit up the gumboot tea for it’s inflammation-relieving tannins. Grab around five to eight bags and leave them to steep in hot water until the water has cooled right down and gone black. At this point you can either take the teabags and apply them directly to the burn, allowing the moisture to soak into your skin or you can get a cloth, soak it in the liquid and lay it upon the burn, leaving it there for 10 minutes, before repeating until the pain starts to ease.

2.  Speaking of burn… if you’re anything like me you use your shaver until it’s on its last legs. The only problem with that? At some point it’s going to say ‘woah buddy, I’m done’ by leaving you with a nasty case of razor burn. You can either spend all day ruing your tight tendencies, or you can brew up a cup of black tea and swipe the steeped black bags across the sore areas while having a cuppa and contemplating trying  to get in one or two more uses of your old razor now that you’ve found a razor burn remedy.

3.  Are your feet nostril hair-shrivelling stinky? Give them a soak in black tea. Grab a big pot, fill it with water, add five or six tea bags, and then boil for around 15 minutes. Once 15 minutes has come and gone turn off the element and leave it to cool for another 15 to 20 minutes. Pour the mixture into a feet-friendly vessel, then stick them in for half an hour. Afterwards give your feet a good rinse. Keep it up daily for a week or so and you should see results.

4.  Woken up to puffy eyes? It’s tea to the rescue! Steep a couple of bags in a cup of hot water, then pop them in the fridge to chill. Once cool, lie back and apply to your eyes and let the caffeine and tannins in the tea get to work shrinking and tightening the skin.

5. Is your hair looking a little dull? Give it a boost with a black tea rinse (this one’s best on dark haired beauties, though blondes can use chamomile tea and redheads rooibos). Take a handful (4 – 6) black tea bags, add a litre of water to a pot and boil. Let it cool. Next time you’re in the shower shampoo and condition, then do a final rinse using your new hair brew. The same concoction can be used as a treatment by applying to dry hair then wrapping in plastic wrap for 10 to 15 minutes before a quarter of an hour. Once the time is up head to the shower for a rinse and condition.

So there you have it, our top five tips for using black tea to fend off beauty issues – from the stinky to the owwie. So do you regularly incorporate tea into your beauty routine? Is it something you’d consider doing? Or do you think the best place for tea is in a cup of hot water with maybe a dash of milk and a spoonful of sugar? Chat away!

Tea is my favourite thing ever! Especially berry flavoured green tea, that does wonders!

A little confused as to what the tea could do to my hair I am guessing it will colour it? this is all great since I helped a friend move and scored a big box of black tea! Thanks!

Wow, so many different uses! I'm really intrigued by the hair mask - I may have to give that a go soonish. My favourite use is definitely the original though: nothing beats a nice cuppa. xx

Wow I have heard black tea is great but I've never really been a big tea drinker, may have to invest in some good organic black tea!

These are great ideas! Especially the burn one. I have read about using them for razor burns a while ago. Im more of a green tea drinker, speaking of green tea I still use mine to make diy masks with honey thanks to beauty review :)
