To Fake Tan Or Not To Fake Tan? That Is The Question.

Have you checked out the Beauty Review Forum lately? It’s a great space, filled with interesting beauty conversations (and some non-beauty topics) about all sorts of things, from skincare for different skin types to beauty hauls to product panning challenges. One topic that comes up on a regular basis is tanning and it brings up lots of interesting questions and along with that different points of view.

During these conversations we often see people falling into one of two camps, those who fake tan, and those who choose to stick to the skin colour they were born with no matter the season. Reasons behind the choices are interesting. Some are comfortable in their skin and see no reason to tan, others like to tan because it makes them feel like they look better, others don’t fake tan because they can’t get it right (count me in on that!). And of course there are those who prefer to tan naturally - and you won’t find any naughty finger wagging from me because I fell into that category for years and years (although I’m reaping the ‘rewards’ now).

With summer in full flight (sort of, depending on what part of the country you live in) it’s high season for tanning. So it got us wondering, what do you prefer to do? Do you refuse to get your pins out until they’ve had a good going over with your favourite bottle of self-tanning lotion? And which brand do you use? Or do you prefer to keep your limbs tan-free and sun-free? In which case how do you manage it in our sunny climes? Or are you a sun worshipper (and if you want  a reason to quit let me tell you about my never-ending facial scab that has the potential to go cancerous to help put you off…) Chat away!

To fake tan or not to fake tan, that is the question.

I love to have a nice tan in summer. My skin is naturally very pale, so I do need some help from fake tan. Although for quite some time i haven't applied any, I never look forward to it as it's quite time consuming lol.

I am the odd one out in my family, they LOVE the sun and can sit in the sun for hours, but Im the opposite, I really dislike the sun and try my best to stay away from it. So I am all for fake tanning, if there is some where I am going where I have to wear shorts or dress, then I fake tan as my face is 3-4 shades darker than the rest of my body.

I don't need fake tan because I am already tan.

I love fake tan, much better than damaging your skin in the sun.

I naturally have color in my skin and actually prefer not to tan because then I have to change my foundation shade and find a new one. This actually the first Summer in New Zealand I haven't been covered from hand to neck trying to shield myself from the sun's rays so I can save on a second shade of foundation. But I have been religiously applying sunscreen before heading outside.

I love fake tanning but I also love au natural as well! Just as I love straight and curly hair, I love switching things up being able to swap looks out and have heaps of fun with lots of varieties in makeup looks/styles! I do not tan naturally with my Scottish skin, so I love mixing it up, my favourite tan is loving tan! Love the colour and how fool proof it is, I have never had it streak on me.

I would love to have a tan as I am naturally pale. I try not to tan naturally as I know what sort of damage it can cause to the skin. I have never faked tanned but I would like to, I just don't want to turn orange or look patchy. Any tips for beginners? :)

I have olive skin and am not like a glass of milk in the summer, so am not bothered about using fake tan, although I have a few fake tanners sitting on my dresser waiting for me to use them. I am going to a wedding shortly, so might pop some on to give me a nice glow.

I like the look of a good tan but I admit fake tanning is low on my priority list at the moment so au natural I am o_O :)

I really want to be tanned- gradual ones seem to slow and gradual for me and I can't be bothered applying myself or having someone looking at my bits then waiting hours and rinsing it off. I used to love the automatic fake tan booths you just strip and get in and do as the robot voice says but I haven't found one in Dunedin. But then half the time no one sees my legs under jeans anyway.

I have never like using self-tanners but since discovering Palmers Cocoa Butter Natural Bronze Gradual Tanning lotion, I've been converted. It's so easy to use and smells a lot better than usual self-tanners and doesn't leave me with stained hands. I've had a gorgeous (fake) tan for a few weeks now! I posted my review of the Palmers gradual tanning lotion on BR yesterday, if anyone is interested in reading.

I'm olive skinned so I don't bother with a regular fake tanning routine. Now and then I'll slap some on my legs, and I have been trying out a Clarins gradual tanner that you mix with moisturiser so it's effortless.

I am usually au natural but if I am in the mood to wear a skirt or shorts I dove holiday skin it up. I am not one nor have I even been one to sit in the sun and bake or lay in a sunbed and bake. I enjoy having good skin that isn't sun damaged.

I always fake tan at beginning of summer until I get a bit of colour and then I don't worry.

I'm naturally chocolate so no need to get a fake tan plus I go dark real quick in the sun. My colleague talked me into buying the VS Rockin Body Leg Shine and wow I think that's the closest I've been to "tanning" haha. I love seeing my legs all one shade of chocolate (minus the shimmer).

It's definitely worth a try, Sarah. I haven't tried the Dove Holiday Skin but I do like the Palmers Gradual Tanning. After trying sooo many self-tanners over the years, I'm happy to stick with this one for a while purely because it's working for me.

Exactly! My legs are often in pants so I generally only tan my arms/chest area lol the lazy mans version of tanning!
