#TheBeautyGuruMadeMeBuyIt!

24 January, 2017 - 10:41pm by - Head Pixie | 20 Comments

Tuesday to Saturday I have a very specific ritual. I wake up, feed the little human, make a coffee and then settle down to watch my favourite beauty YouTuber, Tati, aka Glam Life Guru. I don’t know what it is about Tati that ensnears me so. Perhaps it’s her soothing voice? Her sparkly eyes. Her to-die-for hair. Or maybe it's the fact that she’s kindly straight-up about the products she loves and hates. And every now and then she comes across something and raves about it to the point where I have to buy it*. Leading me to justify said purchase as #TheBeautyGuruMadeMeBuyIt.

Tati is not the only beauty influencer in my life. The delightful KathleenLights has seen me literally log onto a website and buy every second thing she raved about in a video. And The Beauty Review crew’s beloved Wayne Goss is another YouTuber whose advice has seen my credit limit become perilously closer to the nuh-uh stage.

There are plenty of beauty gurus out there, but due to what feels like innate honesty with no-strings-attached on their part I truly believe that their recommendations will work for me. But have they? Read on…

My first ever #TatiMadeMeBuyIt was the Guerlain L’Or Pure Radiance Face Primer. Totally out of my usual budget, to the point that on any other day it would be something I wouldn’t even look twice at. But I sat in front of my screen and watched as Tati’s skin lifted in front of my eyes. LIFTED. At my age and stage I’m all about the lift. So I bought it. And not one day has gone by we’ve I’ve regretted that purchase. It tightens, it firms, and it’s a lovely base for makeup. Also it has gold flecks… and I don't care if people say gold in skincare is a load of hooey, I’mma all about the goooold. Put. It. On. My. Face.

My next Tati recommended purchase was the Milani Conceal & Perfect. And thank god for Makeup.co.nz for stocking this because I actually thought I might combust if I didn’t get to try it. Tati raves about this foundation almost as much as she raves about Maybelline’s Age Rewind concealer. It’s amazingly packaged for the price, coming in a glass bottle with a pump. As for the product? It’s high coverage, it blends beautifully, but on me it tends to oxidise… then weirdly enough settles down to a more manageable colour. That being said, I don’t reach for it often as I’m afraid I’ll look like an Oompa Loompa. I do think it’s good though, and I just wonder if the oxidisation depends on your skin chemistry?

Beauty Blender! Beauty Blender! Beauty Blender! Yep, I’m saying it like Lorelai Gilmore’s Coffee! Coffee! Coffee! (And have you ever noticed how similar Lorelai (aka Lauren Graham) and Tati look? Once you’ve seen it, it can’t be unseen.) Anyway, Tati is all about her Beauty Blender (as well as her Artiste brush, that dream can wait until my credit card is looking like there's life in it) and when recovering from finger surgery and in need of a treat I found myself ordering one. Giddy aunt, I can see why people rave. It bounces like a dream, blends like a dream, it’s a dream come true.

When I saw Sephora.nz was stocking the Jaclyn Hill Palette my day was made. Ever since Wayne Goss raved about it I had done some serious lusting. Three beautiful blushes and two gorgeous highlights including the highly regarded, Champagne Pop. It was pricy. No doubt about that, but if you split it out the cost it worked out to be just over $20 per shade/highlight, which makes it totally justifiable. Totally.  *cough*  It's safe to say, it did not disappoint.

Next up from Mr Wayne Goss was The Ordinary – a range of ridiculously affordable skincare products. Apparenty they contain super effective ingredients and cost a tonne less than similar products. I had to give them a go, so I had them sent from the UK. I tried them. I liked them ok. But to be honest I found them... ordinary (and this could very well be because I'm of the age where I need stuff that's super-charged). In fact I find myself preferring the likes of Trilogy’s Nutrient Plus Firming Serum and once The Ordinary is all used up I’ll be sticking to all serums home-grown.

Lastly, let’s talk about my brief love affair with ColourPop, which came about thanks to Kathleen Lights. The texture of the eyeshadow and the colour range had me at hello. So I bought her specific shades, a then a handful of eyeshadows as recommended by her and some Lippiestix. Thoughts? Feelings? The eyeshadows are fab, but I prefer my palettes and reach for those more often, which has seen the less metallic Colourpop shadows dry out and be chucked out. As for the Lippiestix? Not my favourite. Funny smell, funny texture. I’ll stick to what I can swatch in store.

Of course there is one other big bunch of people who influence my beauty purchases, and that would be YOU! It’s fair to say that reading your reviews and seeing your passion for products on the Forum has seen me heading in store or online to see what all the fuss is about. Thanks to Beauty Review members I’ve discovered the joys of LUSH bubble bars and bath bombs and their lip scrubs, NARS Sheer Glow is one of my top two foundations, Za blusher is top-shelf (another Tati saying! The obsession is real.), and when I lost my MAC Twig I had to buy a replacement. Your influence is real!

So do tell… am I on the only person influenced by beauty gurus and fellow Beauty Reviewers? Which beauty gurus influence you? What have you bought? And was it worth it? Chat away!

I have the Tati eyeshadow pallette and I absolutely love it. I miss her videos

I loooove Kathleen Lights and she TOTALLY made me buy ColourPop. I have purchased a mixed box of shades with 6 colours, I think was called 'Not a box of chocolates' I also got Kathleens 'Where the light is" foursome and then a handful of Lippiestix. Some of them were a bit hit and miss because I couldn't try on first, but one that I am IN LOVE with is Lumiere - like that colour is just amazing. I will definitely replace that shade once I run out and I also want it in the Long lasting liquid formula.

So far, I've been influenced by Jaclyn Hill to buy the Becca highlighters in Moonstone and Opal, which I loved. My face really popped where I put it. I also bought their multitasking brush, which is super long but narrow, that she spoke of. I've used it for blush, bronzer, b.b. cream foundation, blending, and contouring. It's fast and I love the purchase. I've also purchased the Anastasia eyebrow pencils in blonde and light brown for my medium brown eyebrows. I feel like I can fake a lighter brow using these since I do lighten my hair. Jaclyn also got me to buy the Anastasia Beverly Hill Contour palette with the famous "banana powder" included. For some reason, I did not get the same results. I didn't feel like any of the light hi-lighters showed up on my light skin. I didn't think the darker contour shades helped once blended out. You couldn't even tell. I've had the same problem with several contouring products. I do watch Tati too sometimes. like seeing her try new products that I could only dream of affording on my current budget :) I live vicariously through her.

I've seen a lot of YouTube gurus talk about colour pop which is how I got hooked on the liquid lipsticks. Jaclyn hill got me too sigma brushes and I love watching shaaanxo so I've bought a few products she's used.

YouTube us an enabler by far but with reviews I've now learnt do your research ensure you have the similar skin to the guru then check for reviews on BR & also other sources such as Temptalia also the site that srocks the produc give good insight as they have nothing to lose when writing their reviews unless of course they spend big bucks & the product was a fizzer then I weigh up how many have cons & how many pros.. in saying this I've just purchased KLs Bday lipstick bundle but I saw it onine store before her sc

Im one of the biggest people to get influenced by beauty gurus but have learned to not jump at everything anymore due to lack of funds lol. The beauty review babes introduced me to: LUSH ( Which I still love) , Nars sheer glow (A fav foundation) , Za cosmetics (Some are good), MAC- which made me disappointed in their lipsticks and highlighters but I love and adore their pro longwear range and glitters. From youtube I brought: Nars creamy concealer (Holy grail), Anastasia Beverly hills range (LOVE), Benefit stay flawless primer (Awful on my skin) , I ordered a few colourpop products last week so Im excited to see what theyre like :)

I have tried so hard in the last year to not buy so much based on youtube or whatever. I still fall sometimes though, getting sucked into that hype is so real. It's good when you love it, like you, I also have the Jaclyn Hill palette and love it but it is such a bummer when it is really dissapointing.

26th January, 2017

Oh that Jaclyn Hill palette looks divine! Such gorgeous packaging! I tend to be a little wary of youtubers recommending products because even the majority aren't, I feel like some are sponsored or paid to help advertise a brand.

26th January, 2017

I do often hear about a product on Youtube and check the reviews on BR and vice versa. I enjoy doing my research seeing swatches and how it applies, the wear time, results, pros and cons before I purchase anything especially if I can't test the product. Oh and Mac Twig is my favorite nude and default to go lipstick. I found out about it when I went to pick out my first brand new Mac lipstick (I sometimes buy second hand makeup but disinfect it before using). I asked the assistant to direct me in the to a good nude lipstick and she pulled out three choices while I didn't choose Twig that time, remembered really liking it and came back to purchase it and have not regretted it since.

25th January, 2017

I do check BR before buying a product and use the directory and reviews to inform my purchases, but it's usually BBBE that introduces me to new products, and I've been delighted with the service so far :)

25th January, 2017

I enjoy watching beauty channels but it takes more than a few videos to convince me to make a purchase. I normally refer to BR and any other review available in cyberland that can give me a better picture of how the product could potentially perform on my skin type.

It's interesting because I've watched a number of people on youtube rave about the Guerlain primer but they never convinced me enough to even bother looking up reviews. Head Pixie comes along, posts a pic on her instagram and rates it 5.5 so of course I'm going to add it to my wishlist - I just trust our BR community more.

25th January, 2017

I want that primer!

25th January, 2017

Can't say that I've tried watching beauty YouTubers. I would be unlikely to buy something just because a YouTuber loved it, because everyone's skin is so different.

25th January, 2017

I can proudly say I don't follow what the you tubers are using. I just go off what I like and what I read on Beauty Review.

25th January, 2017

I'm not really a beauty guru person, but I do watch some technique videos to help myself out (lots of products I just don't have the confidence with yet). However, I definitely use Beauty Review for a lot of my purchasing decisions. I love being able to find reviews by people who has similar tastes / skin types as me, just makes it so much more likely that I'll appreciate the product.

Plus, reading all the reviews and searching through products adds a little bit of build up excitement for me before I even go out and buy!

I think I trust the reviewers here more than you tube :D

Same. I'm gonna do my research before plunking down the cash since most recommended products these days are usually higher end. Thank God for Sephora's return policy in case you hate something.

I prefer smaller youtubers recommendations for this very reason. You can usually tell if it's sponsered, it will sound like an informercial. I think monthly faves are pretty bad for it.

It's a funny old thing, these days they have to disclose in the down bar if something is being paid for... but I've seen a fair few going on about a brand and then a couple of months later they're collaborating with them. Coincidence? I think not.

Yea quite a few YouTube's that I liked started out really decent but when they got big and famous their content became more and more advertising-y. It's a shame really because it really changes their atmosphere.
