Article by BR Tabatha

With so many choices in life it can be hard to make a decision.  This is where the handy pros and cons list never fails.  (Unless your name is Ross Geller).

We're looking at different hair removal options this week at Beauty Review so we thought we'd give you the pros and cons of the more popular at-home hair removal methods - Shaving, Waxing, Epilating and Depilatory Creams.

Pros Cons
Shaving - Best for legs and underarms

Quick and easy.

Readily available from your supermarket.

You can borrow your hubbie's razor in an emergency.

It's painless.

It actually helps exfoliate dry skin.

Shaving creams can help moisturise your skin, keeping it smooth.

Ingrown Hairs.

The results will only last a day or so before your skin feels stubbly.

Can cause razor burn if you don't use a good shaving cream or gel.

You can cut yourself - scabs do not a smooth leg make.

Over time it's an expensive method, with the ongoing cost of replacing blades and shaving creams/gels.

You need to be in the bath or shower really, or at least have warm water available.

Shaving is the most time consuming at-home hair removal method, with the average shaver spending 5min a day shaving (2.5 hours a month)

Waxing - Best for legs, bikini area, upper lip, underarms and eyebrows
Waxing results can last 3-4 weeks

Hair grows back finer.

After a period of years hair growth becomes sparse.

There's a choice of kits, from roll on waxes, wax strips and microwavable wax.

Waxing is quite a time efficient hair removal method with the average waxer spending an hour a month waxing.

Ingrown Hairs.

Pain - depending on your individual pain threshold it can be quite painful.

Waxing isn't suitable for sensitive skin.

Waxing can bruise and tear skin if improper technique is used.

Waxing can be very messy.

At-home waxing generally requires a 2mm growth of hair.

Epilating - Best for legs, underarms, arms, bikini area and face

Results can last 3-5 weeks.

Hair grows back finer.

After a period of years hair growth becomes sparser.

Hair only needs to be 0.5mm to be epilated.

There are no chemicals/products used so it's great for sensitive skin.

Epilators can be used on most areas of hair growth.

There is no mess nor need for rinsing.

After the initial expense there are no ongoing costs.

Epilating is considered the fastest hair removal method with the average woman spending 40 minutes a month epilating.

Ingrown Hairs.

Pain - depending on your individual pain threshold it can be quite painful.

The intitial outlay can be quite pricey.

You'll need to be near a power point or keep it charged up.

Depilatory Cream - Best for upper lip, underarms and bikini area

Pain free.

Very affordable.

A great method for beginners in hair removal.

It removes hair just below the surface, so can boast longer results than shaving.

It can be messy.

Generally depilatory creams have an unpleasant smell.

You'll need to leave the cream on for around 10 minutes to see results.

Sensitive skin may be easily irritated by the cream.

The results do not last more than a few days.

Will need rinsing off.

So there's our Pros and Cons list for the four main at-home hair removal methods.  Which do you use most often and why?  Are you tempted to switch or are you happy with the status quo?

Never tried waxing, epilator, depilatory creams before on arms and legs.

4th September, 2014

Have tried all of the above and must confess that waxing is way superior. Downside in the beginning is that you have to let the hair grow a few mm's before waxing but the more frequently you wax the finer the hair and the less the growth so it is far less noticeable. I have been waxing for years now and find that the browth is so fine you can hardly see it inbetween waxes! Perseverence pays off.

Wax legs all the way, although I do it myself and struggle with the backs of my legs, the regrowth is softer and has diminished over time quite considerably. Shaving for underarms. As for epiliation, remember my bestie when I was 19 let me try her's on my leg, my goodness, I never felt anything so painful!

Shaving is the way to go for me. ..waxing gives me pin prick bruising and depilatory creams burn. Shaving just seems so quick and easy. I also don't like how you have to wait for decent regrowth for a good wax.

Wow great article! I've always wanted to know how the different methods compared

29th August, 2014

I don't feel the pain so I would be interested in trying epilating. Have tried waxing but having to have the hair grow out before being able to wax again is the worst especially.in summer. So stuck with shaving.

I've tried all of these and have had to revert back to the tried and true shaving.. I've been waxing for yeears now but while I love the results its ruining my skin so I've had to stop. My skin isn't sensitive with other products but for some reason ALL waxes give me little pimple things (yuck!) and crazy ingrowns.. I don't get ingrowns from shaving at all so I find that weird!

As crazy as this sounds, I found going to the salon and getting a wax quite theraputic. Yes it hurt like a bitch but it relieved stress! Maybe epilating is for me? I wasn't so keen on the idea of looking like a plucked chicken but now I'd love to be on the trial for the body epilator!

Well I used to be a waxer only, then say you have a date at the spa pool and you kinda have to shave the yeti growing on your legs. Not my first choice, I hate shaving. I shave with either oil or conditioner. With the warmer weather, past two weeks I've shaved :( (once per week)

For the past few weeks I've been thinking just get an epilator, cause then I can whip off the regrowth in a few days like shaving but better! Than opposed to waiting 5 weeks for the hair to be long enough to wax.... I'm over the waiting!

27th August, 2014

I've tried at home wax kits, shaving with expensive shavers, budget shavers, vibe shavers and hair removal cream.

The thing with expensive shavers is having to buy new shaver heads for them. Pay $20 for a shaver and 2 spare heads but pay $25 for a new pack of just 4 heads.

At home wax kits have never worked for me. They never get all the hairs and end up giving my legs rashes snd become itchy.

Budget shavers equal cuts, ingrown hairs and it actually hurts to use them, blunting after one use.

What do I continue to use over and over? Budgets, why? Because they do the trick. I just make sure I have shaving cream because if not all of the cons happen in one stroke!

If I was shown a waxing product that really works and has long lasting results then I would switch because shaving every second day is so time consuming!

This is a great read.. I have been a shaving lady for years, have attempted waxing at home but never managed it, am defiantly thinking about trying again, I will wait to see how the reviews go from the veet one.. Tried epilation once and will NEVER go back there again!! I have never been a fan of the depilatory cream I found the smell to be very overpowering and with my sensitive skin I think that one is left out of my options

27th August, 2014

I shave my legs and underarms, honeslty can't imagine epliating my underarms. That would be well painful!

27th August, 2014

I can't handle my legs being waxed no idea why but it hurts so much ! Prefer to shave there an wax everywhere else if done by a professional it shouldn't hurt as much :) longer times with no hair sound bliss

27th August, 2014

shaving, quick, easy and painless (granted you don't cut yourself). While I do love that baby smooth feel to my skin after waxing, it's just too painful for me.

26th August, 2014

I've always wanted to try a semi-permanent method but I remember trying waxing strips and the pain seriously put me off.

25th August, 2014

I pluck my brows, wax my upper lip, pluck or epilate my armpits and epilate my legs. I have used depilatories on my upper lip and they really burned the skin, I had a rash of a moustach. I have gotten my brows waxed a couple times but at a salon but it wasn't as accurate as tweezing. I have tweezed my upper lip hair but found that more painful than waxing so I reserve that for strays after waxing the mo. I have shaved my legs a couple times as well as some where else but the stubble was really itchy and uncomfortable so I switched to epilating and plucking. I don't think I'm going start shaving my legs as the regrowth has remained rather fine and sparse since I have only shaved my legs a couple times. My armpits on the other hand I have shaved more often the regrowth was significantly more than my legs. I now pluck or epilate them and find the regrowth softer and fewer.
