Is this the most under-rated natural product ever?

We talk a lot about amazing products.  From high-tech, created-in-a-lab-by-experts to super effective natural formulas.  And we all seem to love the super effective natural blends more.  But does our love of finding something new and better cause us to overlook some of the more simple but still kick-ass products?

Yes, yes it does.  And so I give you the most underrated beauty product around.

The Pumice.

Here's some pumice facts to whet your appetite for pumice appreciation.

  • Pumice stone is solidified frothy lava from volcanic eruptions.
  • Almost all of the pumice in New Zealand is thought to have come from the last eruption of Taupo, around 181AD.
  • The 2012 Kermadec Islands eruption caused a 'pumice raft' the size of Belgium to float in New Zealand waters.

It's most common use is probably in it's original form - the good old "pumice stone", used for smoothing rough skin on your feet and reducing corns and calluses but Pumice is used in several other beauty products, from toothpaste to soap.

Know how to use it.

To get the most from your trusty pumice you need to know how to use it.  You want to soften your feet by soaking them in water before using a pumice stone.  Once the skin has been softened you can begin to smooth your feet with the pumice stone using circular motions with slight pressure.  The idea is to smooth your feet - not rub them raw!

So...the pumice.  What do you reckon, is it the most underrated beauty product ever?  Get chatting below!

I normally use a scrub or exfoliating mitt. I remember as a kid my mum always had some. Will have to invest in some I think.

Most of my yearly resolutions when to pot but a few years back when I had callused heels I made a goal to use a pumice daily in my nighttime showers and I have stuck and used one daily ever since. I used to have to sand my feet down once a week and I haven't had to since. I have made the mistake of using it at the beginning of my showers but a few months back switched to using it at the end and you definitely get better results. I also recommend changing the stone every year or so you have a nice really coarse one that works more effectively.

The Japanese exfoliating towel- not necessarily natural but definitely better than the micro-beads of old or buying copious tubs of overpriced body scrubs. The reusable towel sloughs off dead skin and can be used to exfoliate hard-to-reach places (back) without assistance. You can use any body-wash with it and you can put it in the wash (delicate bag) afterwards. It is much more effective than most scrubs I have used, and easier to use.

I am actually a shocker with these pumice thingys. I own them but don't use them (oops don't judge me lol). I do have a good reason though and that is because I find they hurt and I am such a sensitive baby grrrrr.

Good, but gross!!! All that dead, dried skin getting stuck between the stone’s holes. Yuck is all I can say, especially if someone else uses it (and you know they will if you share a flat especially), can’t say athletes foot/fungal infection and run away quick enough!!!

Hmmm I wasn't convinced when I used it years ago but I guess I wasn't using it correctly. I just may have to revisit this.

Yes I love pumice! Amazing for feet

12th February, 2018

I'm quite lucky that the heels of my feet don't get too dry. So I don't often exfoliate them, but I do love giving them a quick buff with the Ol pumice scrub. You can easily pick them up from the beach which is what I love about them. I don't really find them too effective though but perhaps that's because I don't have badly cracked heels

12th February, 2018

Yes. I use one because my heels ate terribly dry and crack! I think it is genetic but also probably because I don't wear socks and shoes much just handles and little flats

I have never tried it! I might need to give it a go.

11th February, 2018
