The Makeup Trend That’ll Smother Contouring

I can almost see Wayne Goss rolling his eyes now while that delightful smirk of his graces his lips. There’s a new trend and it’s apparently going to knock contouring of its pedestal. The trend? It’s called draping? How new is it? Not very.

Wayne is often amused by how an old trend is reborn and is then called ‘new’, and draping is anything but. It came about decades ago and was the creation of celebrity makeup artist extraoardinaire, Way Bandy. Well it’s been brought back into the spotlight by Marc Jacobs in conjunction with the release of his Air Blush duos. Here’s his take on it:

To me it just looks like blusher, but apparently it’s more than blusher, draping is using blusher to contour. Stop it already. Basically you get a darker shade and apply it just below the apples of your cheeks, or along the line where you’d contour (in the area that’s mean to be shadowed), and then you take a lighter blusher and apply and blend it above the darker blusher. Confused? I sure as heck am/was. And I’m not sure how I feel about it either, with a light hand I’m sure it’s pretty, but yeah, I’m getting major Working Girl vibes.

It also kind of reminds me of the opposite of Charlotte Tilbury’s Swish and Pop blush technique, where you put the lighter colour on the cheek and then pop the darker colour in the middle to create a glowing flush. Well, I guess that’s the joy of makeup, you can try anything and everything to find out what suits you – whether it be contouring, strobing, or draping.

…. UPDATE …. Well, a few days after I started this article, Wayne came out with his demo of draping, which I’m so glad he did, because how I thought it should be done based on all the articles I’d read and how it’s meant to be done are two very different things. You can check the video out here:

… and disappointingly I didn’t see a hint of smirk when he went talked about how it’s not a new trend. Sigh. Wayne, why so serious?

So do tell… are you a draper? Have you been doing it for yonks? Are you willing to give it a go? Do you think it will knock contouring off from the top trend spot? Get chatting!

Blush is a scary area for me at the best of times so draping wouldn't be something I could get in to but I may give it a go just to see what the big deal is

I think draping is the technique I adopt for most of my make up especially when I am in a hurry. It's definitely something you can either pull of or you can't.

Im only just getting the hang of countouring! I think I'll give this a miss and put it in the 'give it ago one day' basket lol

Wayne Goss is such a good looking man, I love his face structure, so beautiful! My first thought was the 80s style of blush, your article sums it up pretty well Tabatha :) I didnt know they had a name for this and Ive been doing this for a while. I use a really fluffy brush and squeeze it to resemble a fan brush and use a dark dusty blush, Benefits Dallas blush is perfect for this.

Oh golly gosh, I just cant keep up! I am trying to master highlighting and contouring and now draping! Whatever next?? I will stick to what I am still learning for now...

That man does an amazing tutorial, even I feel I can do what he did after watching that! Although I may have spent too much time in the 80s to feel comfortable with the look.

I was watching this clip by Goss a few days ago and instantly thought I am sure that's what my mum used to do back in the 80s. I don't think I will be trying it :p

20th July, 2016

It looks really good - but then I LOVED the 80s looks :)

I love my blush. I haven't got contouring yet but I can see various brands are all jumping in on the contouring bandwagon. Once I get contouring down maybe il think about giving this one a try.

The trend blush hoarders have been waiting for! I have about three bushes, one face powder I use as blush and one bright fuschia eyeshadow I use as a blush. But yes I'd give it a go. I think I remember reading somewhere that Grace Kelly used to contour with blushes, I'm not sure if she did it that way though but she put the darker color at the bottom and the lighter at the top. I'm not big on the eighties look but, if done with a light hand it is pretty.

I seriously cannot keep up! So many techniques to try

20th July, 2016

I don't use blush or contour as it is sooooo yeah nah I'll give this a miss :D

20th July, 2016

I think it would be worth trying as the effect is really good . Probably try each and then make a decision on how easy and the results.

Thank goodness for the update because like Tabatha the 80s vibe in my head vs. Wayne Goss' demo are 2 completely different things!!

I put on a lot of blush but it's not elegantly draped or angled. I think contouring is safe haha.
