Spring Clean Your Makeup Bag in Seven Easy Steps!

Article by BR Tabatha

Spring has officially sprung which means it's time to get cleaning right?  Of course we're talking about your makeup stash, not the house!

We can't help but notice some of you are getting quite the makeup stash, which is all very well and good.  Until you run out of storage of course!  Now when it comes to spring cleaning there are pretty much two types of people - hoarders and chuckers.  Chuckers will get rid of most unused or old things without a second thought.  Hoarders will cling to unused, old or broken things just in case

Well as always, we're here to help.  So here's out top tips for spring cleaning your makeup.

  1. Check the expiration dates.  Beauty Review's Zoe wrote this brilliant guide - Expiration Dates of Beauty Products.  Check it out and go through your stash.  When it comes to expiration dates, be ruthless and if it's out of date, chuck it out!  If it's one of your favourite products (which is unlikely if it's unused after it's expiration date) replace it and you'll notice the difference between your old product and one in date.  Trust us!
  2. If you haven't used it in the last three months, chances are you won't miss it if it's gone!  If you absolutely can't bear to throw things out, let us prove our point.  Put anything you haven't used in a box and stash the box in your wardrobe.  If you don't dig it out in another three months, you know what to do right?
  3. If you can't bear to throw things out, do a Project Pan.  Check out BR Natalie's article Project Pan and challenge yourself to use up x amount of products before buying any more!
  4. Wash your brushes and give your products a wipe.   When you think about it, makeup bags are breeding grounds for icky things.  If you've suffered from an eye infection, chuck out your mascara for sure.  Sharpen pencils and wipe with a disinfectant or rubbing alcohol.  Same for if you suffer from cold sores.  Slice the top off your lipsticks, sharpen pencils and wipe with a disinfectantMakeup brushes need to be washed weekly - don't forget your sponge applicators in your compacts and palettes!
  5. Wash your storage.  Especially your cloth makeup bags - imagine the places they've been and what they've been in contact with.  ICK.
  6. Opt for multi purpose products.  Lip/Cheek tints and all over pencils are great for streamlining your stash.
  7. Let it go.  Don't be bogged down with guilt over throwing away products you've spent money on.  Take a deep breath and let them go. Decluttering is good for the soul - just learn from the financial hit!

Does your stash need a clean out?  Are you a hoarder or a chucker?  Do you dread spring cleaning or is it something you relish?  Share your thoughts below!

Im a little bit of a hoarder with my makeup but i have had a major over haul of all old, broken and unused stuff, felt sad throwing stuff out and felt even sadder when i had like no makeup left but it gives me more reason to buy new stuff

What I always like to do is go through all my make up after shorter amounts of time and only throw out a few things at a time so that I don't overwhelm myself and end up changing my mind and hoarding it all like a lunatic hahaha

I didn't think I was that organised but yet I actually manage to keep my make up pretty well sorted... well for the most part... there is still the odd one or two items that I just can't bare to part with but do not use either (sentimental value items).

I a definitely a hoarder and don't chuck things out until they are empty. So I try and use up everything before I buy new products.

I love to chuck stuff out! Don't get me wrong, my cupboards aren't exactly bare, but I try to keep nothing that I don't know to be useful or think to be beautiful (to paraphrase William Morris). I go through my cupboards and drawers quite regularly to take inventory and streamline what I have on hand. Then I know what I need to replace. Oddly enough, the rest of the family aren't keen for me to help them do the same. My husband and children have been known to form a human barricade to keep me out of their wardrobes. Ingrates.

Hmmm maybe I will do this tomorrow if it's raining, ideal to do just before summer isn't it. Gutted I found two brand new mascaras when I was just putting away another I'd just brought whoops lol

I am definitely a hoarder, but in saying that I don't generally wear a lot of make up anyway.

what a great idea, I really need to do this! :)

Great advice, I so love the project pan advice because that has been what I've been trying to do the last couple of months. It is so insanely satisfying to use up products. especially if you keep them somewhere so you can see how many products you have used up in a month.

I think I definitely need to this ! I am a terrible hoarder and think they I will use a lot of things one day. All though I do have summer and winter colours !

I love the idea of spring cleaning the make-up, particularly with reference to all the brushes which seem to somehow be forgotten! I have a small drawn with a 'separator' which I use to prevent my make up from rolling around, and find this works a charm. Thanks for the reminder - it always makes you feel so good once you have done this!

I sure dread a spring clean, but funnily enough when I have done it, I feel very liberated and somewhat virtuous even ????

17th September, 2014

I tend to keep things for a while but every now and then I get all organised and throw stuff out that I haven't used in a while. I am now good at replacing my mascara since being a BR member :)

16th September, 2014

Great tips! I've just thrown out some old product. Although there are still some items I just can't part with yet. The fun ones, but not suitable for everyday. Although maybe I should see if my work mates comment on my gold or silver liquid eye shadows lol!

I'm definitely a chucker! More specifically a seller. I don't keep any makeup products that I don't like so I never have anything that I don't use. If I buy something and don't like it I sell it on straight away and buy something else =) I'm also a perfectionist so all of my makeup is organized and clean. Wouldn't have it any other way =)
