Make up free week – Volunteers Wanted!

Article by BR Natalie

Remember the makeup free selfie craze a few months ago?  People were shunning the makeup and snapping pics au naturale (many, albeit with the help of a filter).  Of course these snapshots only represents a second in a person's life, and if the results of our Cosmetic Spending Habits survey are anything to go by, the makeup free selfies most definitely do not represent us New Zealanders at all.

We don't want to ruin the results of the survey but from the thousands of responses we've had so far we've noticed one thing - we feel more comfortable with makeup than without.  At the moment over 85% of respondents say they are more likely to go out wearing makeup than without.  And over 47% of you would feel some level of discomfort going a week without wearing any makeup at all.

Well we got to chatting in the BR office, and we've decided to further our research with a social experiment. We want to recruit 3 members who usually wouldn't be seen without makeup to go makeup free.  For a whole week. Would going makeup free for a week change your outlook on yourself and the role cosmetics play in your life?

Now if this doesn't make you quiver with fear, this is not the challenge for you.  But if you're reading this in disbelief, thinking who in their right mind would go anywhere and everywhere minus their armour, then we want you!

Here's what being one of the BR Makeup-Free Crew will entail;

  • You will go makeup free for a whole week.  No BB cream, no mascara, no tinted primer.  You will go about your life as bare faced as the day you were born!  And you will do everything you would usually do in a week - no hiding indoors!
  • Selfies.  We want to see you as you go out and about without makeup.  Work, university, the school run, the supermarket, a restaurant, the pub, girl's night out.  And you'll need to be ok with these selfies being shared on our social media and website.
  • Blog.  You'll need to write a quick recap of each day - where did you go and how did it feel being makeup free for a change.  We won't be expecting a novel, but we'll want you to be honest!

And of course we'll reward our BR Makeup-Free Crew with some goodies selected by the Beauty Crew!

So - does this sound like a challenge you could, would or should take?  Apply below by telling us the following:

  1. How much makeup do you usually wear?
  2. Currently, where do you go without any makeup?
  3. Why would you like to take this challenge?

And if this isn't the challenge for you, but you know someone who would be perfect for it, why not use the share icons and pass this on!

Okay this seems a bit scary as I wear makeup everyday but hey guess you got to try new things right?

1. I wear foundation, mascara, eyeliner, and lip gloss. 2. The only place I go without makeup (foundation) sometimes is 6am fitness bootcamp. 3. I think it's always good to step outside your comfort zone and this will definitely be way outside my zone - bring it on!!

I go makeup free quite often so its not too scary for me, i don't always have the best skin sometimes so it can be a bother to go without but i like to let my skin breathe a lot. Also I'm waiting on my Mary Kay makeup remover before i start wearing make up every day again otherwise it makes my skin tone even worse cos I can't get the stuff off properly

1st October, 2014

I wear too much makeup everyday to go makeupless! Plus i am in no way ready to start answering the "are you okay? you look ..... insert negative adjective" questions. What a sad state of affairs!

1. As a mummy now I don't allways get to wear makeup as I don't allways have the time but if I'm going out I try to at least use a bit of foundation and hardly ever go out without some lip gloss at least. 2. I generally don't wear makeup around the house and won't stress to much if I'm going straight to hubby's work and then home again. 3. I love doing myself up as it makes me feel good and I love trying to make myself look good for hubby, yet hubby reckons I look beautiful without so I wouldn't mind taking on the challenge to see myself as looking good even without makeup and I'd like the challenge. I have a feeling it be a lot harder than I expect :)

Ekk!!! That would be hard as I absolutely have to wear makeup before I leave the house and especially when I have to work.. I wear bb creme, powder foundation and eye make up...would lile to try this challenge as I cant go without makeup!!

oo - i would love to give this a go. i was actually thinking about the make- up free selfies yesterday.... 1- During work days I wear.... Primer, Concealer, Foundation, Power, Eyeliner, Mascara, A tiny amount of blush and some lippy.... going out i will then add some fancy eyeshot to the mix and the lippy become bright bright lippy. 2 - Currently I will wear make-up before my shower in the morning, and once i am heading to bed at night... 3- I wear make up to feel better about my self. about my skin. All the red-ness, the scars and the un even skin tone, hooded eyelids... (and all the other flaws i can see when i look closely) they make me feel embarrassed about my skin. I feel like I have very unpretty skin most of the time.. and i think forcing myself to go make up free would force me to look at me and be ok. If i can go for a week without make up, hopefully that will change my attitude about my skin.. providing of course my work mates dont run and hide when they see me bare-faced!

Usually I wear fitme foundation mascara and a bit of blush during the week on the weekend i switch to minimal bb cream and mascara so I guess I don't wear a lot anyway! Being in Dunedin means no tan so some makeup is always required, I don't go anywhere with no mascara that baby goes on for everything my lashes a short and light coloured. This would be a challenge for me to not be able to wear anything at all, I know it would be good for my skin and confidence

27th September, 2014

Haha there is no way I could ever do this but it really is an awesome challenge

26th September, 2014

You know what, I would be keen to get in on this! I currently wear make-up every day right up tot he moment i got to bed at night. I am in a customer facing role & one of the few woman at work who puts on a full face of make-up so it's going to be a big change for me. However I am excited by the idea of this :D I normally feel washed out if I dont wear make-up so i would like to thing by the end of the experiment I will actually learn to love my bare face ;)

25th September, 2014

Kudos to the brave girls that can do this. I would give it a go if I can nice skin but unfortunately my skin is anything but nice. Good luck girls :)

24th September, 2014

I would. but yeah, it would be a challenge especially if I had a blemish somewhere I wanted to cover. I usually wear Primer, BB cream, eye shadow, mascara, lipstick, blusher, and sometimes eyeliner as well.

I wear a full face most days, even if i' m just going to the supermarket. Latley i' ve been slowly been putting on weight and i feel really insecure about it, so i feel like maybe, i' m wearing a mask of makeup to make my self feel more attractive even if it is just on my face. My boyfriend tells me i' m beautiful without it and is constantly trying to challenge me into not wearing it and i do feel like my skin needs it lol and i need it just to feel secure.

I usually wear a full face of makeup each day and I work as a registered nurse in a public hospital ???? not to blow my own trumpet but I have quite good skin with the occasional pimple the size of Africa invading my chin! It's not like I have the intention of putting on a full face...I start with some serum then primer then a little bit of foundation (what leads to full coverage) then some concealer for those night shift bags, and then HELLO powder, bronzer, blush and highlighter have somehow appeared while I was on autopilot ???? now a quick curl and some mascara on the lashes and can't forget to fill in the brows....and there goes my "minimal" makeup day!! I would love to do this challenge just to prove to myself I don't need makeup everyday ????

23rd September, 2014

Would totally love to give this a go, I never wear a lot of makeup anyway but usually always wear at least BB cream or foundation. I have a few days a week where I dont wear it so would LOVE to be forced to have a makeup free week and see how my skin feels

23rd September, 2014

I would have to hibernate in the house for a week, and as I have no holidays left I will have to pass on this one. I am sure there will some very brave ladies out there somewhere who will step up the the challenge and I will be cheering them on. You GO Girls xxxx
