Is it Important for a Company to Give Back?

It's probably safe to say that beauty products and treatments make us feel good.  It's also probably safe to say we all like doing something nice for someone else.  But does feeling good, and indeed making someone else feel good, influence our choice of products?

Now sure, a company releasing a product that gives part of the proceeds to worthwhile causes isn't a necessarily a new idea, but you must admit, it is a nice one.  So how about a company that not only donates to charity with EVERY product sold, but also keeps YOU safe?

Today's brand is the Cancer Society NZ.  They've raised over $2 million to cancer research since 2013.  $2 million - that's huge!

We're looking for members to trial the Cancer Society SPF 50+ Ultra Cool Beach Sun Spray.  This quick drying easy to apply formula offers very high protection in a one touch continuous spray.

This sunscreen offers amazing benefits including:

  • Extra cooling sensation
  • Quick drying
  • Easy to apply
  • Non greasy
  • UVA/UVB broad spectrum

As usual we're looking for a trial team of thorough testers and great review writers to give it a whirl.  Fancy a spot on this team?  Tell us - what do you think of beauty with a conscience?  Should companies give back? And does public support of a charity impact where you choose to spend your money?

The full Cancer Society NZ sunscreen range can be purchased from sunscreen.org.nz

Any large company had a duty and a corporate responsibility to support the communities from which they earn their income and from where their workers originate.

I have supported Cancer Society products for many years and think they are doing a great job to promote sun safety.

Im big into companies giving back as I dont like lining the pockets of big greedy companies which have a large mark up on their products as it is. Lush is a great company, aswell as Sorbet - both which I love, which give back. Love the sound of this product esp that its 50+ SPF as I have fair european skin that burns super easily

I think I am one of the many people who are stating to question more about the products they buy and the corporates behind them. If a company is using it's power for good, it gets my vote ahead of the rest. I choose other products for this reason - deodorants, household cleansers etc, so would like to do the same with this product

For me it really depends on the company. If it's a small business then I don't have great expectations because they're just trying to survive or establish themselves. If it's a large company then, unless they market the fact that they're donating to a good cause in a big way, I won't know (if they just say that they donate to a cause without specifying how much, I'm likely to be skeptical and think it's more a marketing ploy). But with something like the cancer society, I know that it's making a big difference and am therefore more likely to want to buy their products to support them. But, the products have to be as good as the other options on the market.

That is amazing! I had no idea they raised that much. Anyway, if a company is giving to charity it doesn't necessarily make my decision easier. I shop around for the best quality at the best price for a product I'm after. If I've got two products at the same price of course I will pick the one donating to charity over the other one. As for the "should" they give back? No, there shouldn't be any obligation for a business to give to charity, it's an individual's choice - there is that thing in the back of my mind though where a company is making millions & I always wonder how much difference they could make by donating to charities. Anyway, I'd love to try this product! Our family use Cancer Society sunblock, nothing else. I would love to see how easy it is to use and whether my 5 year old could use it easily.

This is a major decision maker for me. If there are two products that are essentially the same but one is charity affiliated or supports a charity then I will go for that one. In fact I used to volunteer at the cancer society as a uni student and really was surprised at the extent of work and support that the cancer society provides for the community. From providing free, comfortable accommodation when staying out of town for treatments, to their Look Good Feel Better initiative where they give women sufferers of cancer a makeover. Love their work and will always support them. I have heard conflicting things about their sunscreens, would be interested in giving it a go as I am usually a Banana Boat sunscreen only kinda girl. Love that it is specifically designed for New Zealand sun as well. So important with our hole in the Ozone layer.

Woohoo! over $2mil is insane! I'm so glad this is a company I regularly support - during summer I live by the Aftersun Gel! Although i find it important the product actually works for me, knowing that the money you spend on beauty products definitely does also have it's place. In a way I think it'd be awesome if every major brand had a charity they donated to or department stores donated a portion of sales to even 1% makes a difference to someone.

I love it when companies donate and support charities, it's not all about profit but about being part of society and making sure you contribute in to help as well. You can buy a product that helps you, and they give you the opportunity to help others as well if it means donations are given.

16th January, 2017

Love their other products this looks even better than them!

16th January, 2017

Yes! A company that gives back, especially to something so relevant to their own cause, is a winner! And this sunscreen sounds awesome. I'm struggling with our current brand, we seem to still be getting burnt through it, especially my daughter who burns so easily!

16th January, 2017

Yep I'm all for companies that have something like this where money is given to a good charity, if I see something like this it definately makes me want to buy the product to help out

16th January, 2017

I like the idea of companies supporting charities but sometimes it just feels like a marketing ploy so I'm a bit wary. Reading the total amount though is a bit different and 2 million is great. I've also heard some things about sprays not working effectively but I would like to give this a go and test if it works effectively since a spray is pretty convenient.

16th January, 2017

I think this is an awesome idea from them and I would rather give my money to a company giving back than one that isn't.

It is important to me to see companies giving back, but it is just as important to me to see companies using ethically sourced ingredients and ingredients that are not harmful to me or the environment. It is important to contribute to charities but also to make sure the practices of the company are ethical as it important for companies to consider how their own actions contribute to problems (ie if a clothing company was donating to a charity that was fighting poverty, but they were still using sweatshops to produce their clothes).
