How To Use Dry Shampoo

Article by BR Natalie

As beauty gadget fanatics we're used to saying things like "What did we do before straighteners?",  "I could not live without my epilator", "Don't worry, every hotel room has a hair dryer".

Products on the other hand, well, we're a bit more difficult to be wowed by.  For every product promising to change your life, there are 10 others that promise the same thing.  A month later, there's a whole new line of products that make your current must-have look lame.  When you think about it, very few products actually are game changers. Recent beauty discoveries that have changed beauty routines and habits include BB Creams, Gel Nail Polish and Dry Shampoo.  And as it's 5 Minute Beauty Week, we had to give you the ins and outs on Dry Shampoo - if don't already love it, you will - just follow our guide!

What is a dry shampoo?

Dry shampoo is just that - it's a dry substance that 'cleanses' your hair without the need for water.

What are they made of?

Back in ye olden days dry shampoos were essentially baby powder type things.  You'd sprinkle the powder on your roots, leave for a minute or two and then brush out.

Nowadays most dry shampoos are found in an aersol, so they'll still consist of a powder, but they'll be aerosol propellants, fragrance and often, conditioning agents added.

How do they work?

Dry shampoos aren't going to replace your regular shampoo - they just don't contain enough solvents nor will your hair be suitable agitated to let go of grime and dirt.  What dry shampoos do is absorb excess oil from your hair and scalp, eliminating the greasy look.

Why do I need one?

Dry shampoos are darn handy to have around.  Here's some examples:

  • To freshen up your hair after a gym trip when you don't have time to wash and dry it.
  • To freshen up second-day-hair, so you don't have to either wear a hat, or pull it back in a boring ponytail
  • To freshen up new-mama-hair.  You know the one.
  • Going camping?  No guarantee of running water, let alone warm water?  Meh, you can go glam-ping with dry shampoo and look fabulous.

You get the point right?  It freshens your hair!

How do I use a dry shampoo?

  1. Wash your hands first - no sense putting more dirt on your hair right?
  2. Remove hair ties, bobby pins, etc and brush your har through.
  3. Focus mainly on the roots and spray the dry shampoo on to your roots, holding the can about 6 inches away from your head.  (The spray is usually pretty forceful by the way - be prepared to jump!)
  4. You can brush the product down the strands if you choose, but they're most effective at soaking up sebum from the scalp and roots.
  5. Leave it to do it's thing for a minute or two .
  6. Flip your head upside down and using a brush or your hands massage the roots and scalp to add volume and encourage any residue to dissolve.
  7. Style!

Any other tips?

  • If you have dark hair go for the less is more approach to avoid obvious powder residue.
  • Use dry shampoo on bobby pins to increase grip.
  • Flip your hair upside down and apply dry shampoo for more volume.
  • If you want your curls to stay separate lightly spray your curls with dry shampoo.
  • Stop your fringe from sticking to your forehead - spray under your fringe not on top.

So there's our guide to using Dry Shampoo - anything to add?  Are you a fan of dry shampoo or have you yet to try it?  What's you favourite dry shampoo and what tips do you have!

Thanks for the tips. I have just started using dry shampoo as I have my hair coloured with bright colours & am trying to reduce the number of times I wash my hair so the colour fades less. I like the tip about spraying it on upside down & also about spraying under the fringe & not on top. My tip - definitely invest in a good one & don't try & save money by purchasing a cheap one as they cause the greyness/white powdering/knotting etc

I recently just starts using dry shampoo due to discovering it on here. Is great for those times when you just don't have time to wash your hair but feel embarrassed walking out with greasy hair. I also love using it after sport etc.

Learnt the hard way to not use too much dry shampoo. My hair is dark brown and the first time I tried it I remember clearly my friend going EWWWWW You've so much dandruff! Not a good day

Oh okay that's what I was doing wrong. While I did focus on the roots and massage it into the roots I would brush is out immediately. I will try it differently next time. And I do recommend VO5 Plump Me Up dry shampoo over Tresemme. The first add volume and took away the greasiness the later just made me hair sticky. This is just my opinion based on my experience.

I have never used dry shampoo and I guess like my skin my hair is the same and pretty dry I can go a whole week with out washing it, they sound pretty cool tho :)

Awesome read I'll try using it again, I think I just put way to much on. It does come out with such a force. I've ended up just using it when I wanted an up do just to give my hair some texture

I haven't used a dry shampoo for years, I should, though, because my hair can get greasy in between washes, especially my fringe and the roots. I used to use baby powder when I was a teenager, which worked o.k.

I was a bit skeptical about dry shampoo at first but it really is amazing! It definitely works a lot better than I thought it would, and the Batiste range smell sooo good!

After being a daily hair washer forever, I've recently started using a dry shampoo and I love it. Before I would never go out with greasy looking, limp, medusa hair, but a quick spray with the dry shampoo and I'm away. Saves me hours per week using every second day and my hair is thanking me for it too. Currently using Redken Pillow Proof and Joico Instant Refresh, both great.

Honestly dry shampoo is a must have for me, i love it so much and it just makes life easier ! i have naturally very curly hair, but i blow-dry and curl or straighten it every time i wash it, which can be a long process ! my hair naturally can last a while without needing to wash, but when it gets to the last day or too dry shampoo is so helpful !

1st October, 2014

I have tried a few dry shampoos now and Redken would be my favourite so far, I was told it was a finer spray and wasn't so obvious on the hair. I am using a Fudge one at the moment but this is quite noticeable if you don't give your hair a good brush. I only lift my hair and spray in and under it to give my hair more volume and take away that in between greasy look. Makes managing my hair so much quicker and easier in the mornings.

I have never tried dry shampoo yet but reading all the comments I think I should invest in a bottle soon. There is a big bucket sale at the ASB Showgrounds this weekend, the catalogue has Batiste @ $8 each is this a good price for my first try out?

1st October, 2014

I've never used dry shampoo before but will definitely try it out because it sounds amazing!

1st October, 2014

Dry shampoo is great. I go through stages of my hair looking greasy on day two and the dry shampoo was the answer I was looking for if I can't be bothered washing it constantly.

1st October, 2014

I used dry shampoo for the first time a few years ago when I went on a camp. Now as a mummy I allways have a can somewhere as you don't get the spare time to go over board like I used too and for sone reason second day hair has attacked with a vengeance :)
