How often do you treat yourself to a facial?

A few years ago I was pretty dismissive about facials.  For some reason I thought of them as glorified facial massages, maybe with a bit of serum slapped on for good measure.  I don't know why I was so suspicious - it's not a quality I apply to other intensive treatments, like say an in-salon hair treatment.  I'll happily pay more for them and believe in the benefits; but facials just didn't appeal to me.  I was picturing a fifties salon with a green facemask and cucumbers on the eyes.  And well, I could do that at home right?

Well, no, it turns out.  After my usual waxing appointment, I confessed my opinion of facials to my Beauty Therapist.  She had a free appointment after me, and before I knew it, I was being cleansed, exfoliated, massaged, moisturised.  This was applied to areas of redness, that was applied to my oily prone areas. I was tackling dark spots, evening my skin tone and minimising fine lines - all by laying on a bed and being pampered.  And it wasn't just a case of 'oh this product is great for...', there was actual science behind it.  There was technology.  Facials are a 21st century treatment.

Now when I'd finished, I looked like I'd been to the gym, you know that healthy, if very shiny look.  But I felt amazing.  I was relaxed and my skin was tingling.  I was hooked.

I chatted with my Beauty Therapist over the weekend and asked for her top 5 reasons why a monthly facial is a must.  Here's what she said:

  • A facial alone won't save your skin, but it provides a fresh starting point for tackling ongoing issues.  Regular facials will keep your skin healthy and prevent your skin problems slipping further back.
  • A facial will give you a deep cleanse that you can't achieve at home.  Bye bye clogged pores, excess sebum and blackheads.
  • A facial will exfoliate your skin far more effectively than at-home treatments.  Behold - fresh skin.
  • A facial will arm you with knowledge.  Your beauty therapist will be able to recommend products that are perfect for your specific skin issues, telling you ingredients to look out for and what to avoid.
  • A facial gives you an hour of relaxation.  While your skin is being saved, your mind is on a tropical island, with no kids, no work, no stress.

So - are you a regular for facials?  Do you stick to the same treatment, or do you mix it up depending on your skin's current condition? Do you notice a difference if you skip a treatment?  Or are you just not convinced by the power of 1 hour of intensive skin treatment?

We're looking for 6 ladies based in Auckland to take part in a very special beauty clinic trial.  If selected you agree to attend a world reknowned beauty clinic and undergo a facial treatment.  (Which we're not revealing yet).  You'll then need to complete a survey and provide a brief write-up about your experience.  If you'd like to put your hand up to be considered for this trial, comment below and start your comment with 'I live in Auckland....' and tell us about your skin!

I live in Auckland and love facials - but haven't had one for a couple of years. The best ones improve your skin beyond belief. The mediocre ones are a pleasant experience but don't give longer lasting benefits. It depends where you go, who does the therapy and which products they use.

I never treat myself to any beauty/spa treatments because I never have time to, even though I am a beauty therapist. My client's needs come before mine and taking time to pamper is something I can only dream of doing....at this moment in time. I love my job though :)

I live in Auckland! My skin is dull, dry and pasty. I'm prone to redness and no matter how hydrated my skin feels, makeup seems to cling in an unflattering way on my face. I had a chocolate facial once which was amazing because it was edible as well!

I live in Auckland and I have not had a facial before. I have such sensitive skin I am too scared to go in and pay for something that may dry out my skin even more - I don't even use facewash! However I am lucky I don't often get pimples so you win some you lose some

Can't remember the last time I had a facial, years ago.....

Salon facials are more like a birthday treat if I am lucky... actually no... much less frequently (I had one before I was pregnant with my son).

OMG Hardly ever get to experience this pure pampering bliss...Most of my facials are at home products when I've time or remember...Pity I don't live in Auckland as would be a nice treat.

I am an occasional treat person for facials - I absolutely love them and would love to have one every month as like you say they make you feel amazing BUT I just dont have the disposable income to spend on such treats. I would love to give your trial a go - I have some sun spots and adult acne that would love some pampering. :)

I live in Auckland and most of my skin care regime is all done from home - my daily routine and the occasional face mask! Sometimes I treat myself to a facial and its the most wonderful beauty treatment to have. It's always good to get advice on how to keep my skin looking young and how to combat the mix of dry/oily skin that I have.

I have never had one ! Oh the joy to have the spare time and money to be able to treat myself to one !

Not as often as I'd like to , not once since coming to NZ :( Would love to though !

Hardly ever, once every couple of years. Probably I'm just lazy and don't get around to it. But the ones I have had are so relaxing and my skin looks and feels fantastic for weeks afterward. Note to self - make more of an effort!

2nd July, 2015

I work full time and have a young family so my time is taken up. I would love to be able to relax and have a facial at some stage just to unwind :)

I've had two facials this year, one was free and one was part of a girls weekend, and I really disliked both. I'm so surprised, but I now know they're not for me! I really enjoyed the head massage part, but they always use such highly fragranced products, even though they ask beforehand whether you have sensitive skin. My dry skin is used to my fragrance-free skin care so it didn't react well to either facial. Excited for the ladies that get to complete this trial though!

Last and first time i have ever had a salon facial was right before my wedding - which was 10 years ago now! It was absolutely devine!!! It was pampering at its best! Such a interesting read and can see why it would be essential to have regular facials! I am not in Auckland but very close and would happily travel if i was to be selected for this treat!
