Is there such a thing as a makeup trend going too far? Sometimes I think yes, like when we were shown the squeamish joys of bubble nails, and snow globe nails. Then someone starts turning their eyebrows into rainbows and I am all for trying new makeup looks again. And then some designer decides to put makeup on the ears of their models and ear makeup becomes a thing, and I’m just like… yes! No! Maybe!?
So yeah, ear makeup. It’s a thing. Apparently. You see, I keep reading about it, but I’m just not seeing regular folk doing it.
According to MarieClaire ear makeup has been around since 2014, when makeup artist Tom Pecheux popped it on the models and sent it down the runway at designer Anthony Vaccarello’s show during Paris Fashion Week. Then this year it made a comeback at a Louis Vuitton, and an Opening Ceremony show.
So what does ear makeup involve? Think inky black lobes, glittered up tragus, and the odd besilvered helix. Basically if it’s an exposed part of the ear it’s open to being prettied up. Or gothed up. Or sparkled up. Here’s an example:
As you can see it was from 32 weeks ago. Previous to that there are only a handful of ear makeup pictures on Instagram. Pinterest had even less pictures, although I did find this one, which caught my eye.
One wonders if it’s a real tattoo? Can any of our tattoo aficionados tell? As for #earmakeup on Twitter, it’s only in the last week that it’s becoming a thing. Which makes me wonder, if a trend has taken two years to become a thing, is it really something people want to do? Or is it something that the great ‘they’ of the beauty world are trying to make happen. And at what point will the great ‘they’ shrug their shoulders and give up knowing they gave it a good nudge?
Yes, it’s probably clear that I’m sceptical that this trend is going anywhere. But I could be wrong. It’s been known to happen. Maybe once. Twice if I’m being generous. And, you know, you see a picture of ear makeup like the one below and you can see how it could perhaps be a thing. Maybe.
So what are your thoughts on the trend that’s taken two years to come about? Will you rock ear makeup? What style of ear makeup do you like? Or is this one look you have no intention of trying? Chat away!
Definitely pass on this one lol
