Dud or Dupe? Colour Correcting Primer

It's always the way isn't it? You find a holy grail must-have beauty product, you go to repurchase it and discover it's discontinued. It's a vaguley terrifying moment, when thoughts like 'what will I do now?', 'where will I find a product just like it?', 'oh my giddy aunt my life is over' run through your head. Most recently this happened to me when my beloved Dermalogica Redness Relief Primer ran out.

Man I loved that primer.

Too much sun as a youngster, too much spicy food, wearing glasses etc have contributed to redness around my nose and cheek area, and while it's not the redness of a day drinker, it's something I'm conscious of, and Dermalogica's Redness Relief Primer not only acted as a lovely base for my makeup it also toned that colour right down.

So when I ran out and went to buy it online from Dermalogica and saw it was no longer on their site, the 'oh no' was real. I even messaged them via Facebook to see if it still existed. It didn't. They did offer an alternative but while it sounded lovely it didn't mention redness reduction.

Then the beauty fairies decided to smile upon me and presented with with an advertisement for Australis' new range of colour-correcting primers, which includes one for redness.

The clouds did part. The sun did shine. The angelic chorus resounded.

Helloooooooo trip to Farmers. I swatched said primer on my hand and it looked like it did something - and the $19.95 price tag was festive-friendly - so to the counter I went where the purchase was made, and off I drove home, praying the whole way I'd found a dupe, not a dud.

Usually I'd do a before and after pic here. But my camera's not good enough to show what happened next - so you're just going to have to trust me on this...

So... is it magic or meh?

Well abra-ka-freaking-dabra. It worked. Beautifully.

My redness was toned down every bit as well as the Dermalogica primer had done. Even better - it's a great primer. My foundation stayed on all day, and there was no slip. The only minor downside? The primer did sit in my pores initially and looked a touch greeny-white, but a little dab dab dab with my fingertips saw that blend away.

So is it an exact dupe? No. The texture is different. Dermalogica is greener in colour, thicker in texture and the Australis Colour Clique has a more silky silicone feel on the skin. But does it do the job just as well?

Darn tootin' it does. Colour me a convert!

So do tell... what dupes have you found recently that we need to know about? Are you on the look out for dupes for any discontinued products? Maybe our wonderful BR beauty community can help? As always... sharing is caring!

Maybelline Tattoo Brow Gel Tint is a very inexpensive dupe for.......microblading hahaha. Unfortunately because I have oily skin I'm not a good candidate for microblading which I've wanted for ages.

I "sculpt/paint" my brows, leave for 20 mins then peel. Im set for 4-5 days then I have to repeat the process. Of course it doesnt look as fab as microbladed brows but I save hundreds of dollars and get results that I'm very happy with.

Love me some dupes! Would be awesome to have a dedicated page or something to make it easy to find.

Thanks for the tip! I have the Dermalogica one and really like it, so it's good to know what else I can buy when I run out!

I've tried the LA girl primers, they're affordable and I like the red one.

Love reading reviews like this! I really like Australis products and I don't use a primer (what? I hear you say) so I'll have a look at this one :)

I've found a few palettes that are the same shades as the UD Naked Palette. And I'd be keen to find a dupe for the Chanel foundation.

I haven’t found any dupes yet as I’m yet to discover what they are.

Not really a dupe but a new product that I'm loving is the Palmer's Cleansing Oil. It's affordable, doesn't sting eyes, natural, it rinses away clean and the bottle is 192ml which is more than the average 100-150ml bottle of cleansing oil. I'll be buying many more bottle of this stuff.

Great article :) I found dupes for really high end highlighters by purchasing the luminous powders online they have no brand but they are really good dupes for ABH glow kits & KVD I am sure they used the stuff I bought to make their pallets with the addition of talc or titanium dioxide & alcohol or something to press them together

Ha ha ha I love reading your reviews and articles Kellie, your words are just so cute but at the same time honest and real. I am nearly all out of my purple primer and at $40 and this time of the year, was also looking for a dupe. May have to try this even though it is a green and not a purple. Thanks for such an entertaining and thorough review xx

I've been really happy with the wet n wild primer at a huge difference in price to the smash box primer I usually use

15th December, 2017

Wow! Sounds amazing. I'd love to see this compared to some L'oreal ones too.

15th December, 2017

Sounds like a really amazing primer - I'll have to remember when I'm next buying!

I found this in Farmers too and swabbed some onto my hand. I also found one by Shiseido and tried that one too. The Shiseido one felt better on the back of my hand, not as silicony.

Looks like I'm off to farmers this weekend!

Now that I think about it the texture is similar to Dermalogica's pre-cleanse. I think the Dermalogica one gets a bit more makeup off on the first wash but I double cleanse anyways.
