Do you Save or Splurge on Micellar Water?

Poll posted by BR Natalie

Whenever we need a new product, we're faced with the inevitable question - do you have to spend more for a good product? Can 'budget buys' ever really compete with an upmarket brand?  Our popular feature Save or Splurge is all about finding out.

Every fortnight we'll pick a product type and find two similar products from very different ends of the budget spectrum.  3 members will put both products to the test and report back!*

If there was one product that everyone wanted to try this year, it was a Micellar Water right?  Hot on the heels of Beauty Blogger raves, we were all anxiously checking the supermarket shelves waiting for the 'new way to cleanse' to be stocked.

There was a lot of Micellar confusion - it looks like tap water and yet apparently it can remove a full face of makeup.  Yeap, Micellar Water isn't a rinsing agent - it's an actual cleanser that's renowned for gently removing makeup and impurities from the skin. But here's the really cool part; Micellar Water is soap and detergent free and doesn't need washing off.  You can simply sweep it across your face with a cotton pad.

So how does it work, you may be wondering?  Micellar Waters contain micelles which are molecules that trap and remove impurities from the skin.  And because it's free from fragrance, soap and what nots, it's great for sensitive skin.

And the really great news?  There's a Micellar Water to suit every budget!

We're going to put YSL Top Secrets Toning & Cleansing Micellar Water against Simple Micellar Cleansing Water.  And when we say 'we're going to put them to the test', we really mean you!  Yes, we need 3 members to trial these two products and report back, telling us if we need to spend $69 or $12 on Micellar Water.

This week's SoS is open to any member that comments with their interest on this poll.  Yes, that's right, we'll be selected 3 great reviewers from these comments, and these comments only!  So tell us why you'd love to be on this special trial team and it really could be you!

*If you accept a spot on a Save or Splurge team you agree to:

  • Review both products individually as you would any other trial products
  • To send through a comparison paragraph detailing how the products fared against each other, ending with your final recommendation - Save or Splurge.
  • You will complete all of this in the given timeframe, lest you want to face the wrath of angry Gladys.

I also got the Garnier one on trial (which I have bought again) and I have also tried the simple one, both worked well, so I don't know what the more expensive one will do differently, and I'd be very keen to try them out.

As an avid make up lover, some of the best things in life have been cheaper items. I've never tried any of the micellar waters I have been a strict cleanser girl trying everything from Lush to Dr Hauschka to Chanel and Dior.....but I still haven't found what I'm looking for (yes that song will be stuck in your head now too) Would LOVE love love to sample this and give you my thoughts if these are bees knees either way high end or supermarket product.

I have really sensitive skin and think thos product might be useful. Im biased to splurge because i feel that the composition of a product, its odour and feel would be better. In saying that ive used affirdable products that were pretty good and competitive. So pick me and ill report back on the features of both products

I've been trying out the Garnier micellar water, but other than that I'm pretty new to the micellar water world, I'd love to opportunity to try some more out!

19th August, 2015

I've never tried either! What is it!

19th August, 2015

I've tried a couple of cleansing waters now and I have started including it as part of my every day end of day routine. Currently using Simple and it is my favourite so far, having also tried L'oreal and Garnier. Always on the hunt for new products and definitely interested in a higher end cleansing water for comparison!

I purchased the Garnier and must say I am quite impressed with how it leaves my skin! It's clean but not tight, a great way to freshen up. Would be interesting to try the Simple as this is in the same price bracket as Garnier and to see how this goes!

I'd love to be on this trial team because I've never used micellar Walter so I come with no expectations, completely open minded. And because I used to be able to splurge, but now I can only save ha ha so this is perfect for me..

Haven't tried it but would love to see what the fuss is about! I'm such a lazy cleanser usually!

17th August, 2015

My first experience with Micellar water was the Garnier brand and I found it terrific, so am now hooked on this way to cleanse my skin. I would therefore love to try again another brand and let me tell you it's more than "just fancy water "

i really love my Garnier micellar water it help change my beauty routine for the better, because it a great product!! so i can only imagine how fantastic these two are and your love to give them ago can't wait to find out what everyone thinks!!!

14th August, 2015

i have wanted to try Micellar water since it hit NZ and i would be very interested in the difference between the cheap one and the expensive one, would love to trial this!

14th August, 2015

My current budget barely even extends to the save option, let alone splurge!! My skin hasn't had anything done to it in a long time, so it's a "blank canvas" ready to compare them!!

13th August, 2015

That is the BIG question , right ? and what better way to find out by trying both out ! Would be thrilled to be trialing these !

12th August, 2015

I have never tried any of this fancy water yet. I usely use wipes and tap water I would be keen to try this out to see if it is any better than just old plain water! :)
