Do you return beauty products that aren't quite right?

As consumers we're pretty well protected - you can return almost anything for a full refund, replacement or store credit.

When it comes to a bad purchase, I'm not shy to head up to customer services and ask for a refund.  The same if I end up with two of one product, or even something I've changed my mind on when I see it in my home.  But the one thing I can't bring myself to return are beauty products.

Even if they're unused.  I just can't do it.  And I don't know why.  Maybe it's the heebie jeebies I felt whence once I came home with a tester lipstick by mistake.  I don't want my germs to be 'another person's germs' to some poor shop assistant.  Or maybe it's just the consumer guilt thing.  I mean, I bought it, I took it home, opened it and tried it.  If I take it back and ask for my money back, isn't that a bit naughty?  The store can't resell it, so in the bin it goes.  This does not make me a friend to the environment either.

Nope, when it comes to a bad beauty buy I take my lumps and where possible, I gift the unwanted product to a friend.

And yet I'd be well within my consumer rights to return beauty products that didn't work or I didn't like them once I tried them.  Most department stores and pharmacies have returns policies that will allow you at the very least store credit if a product doesn't work for you.  So if you're unsure about your next beauty purchase it might be worth asking for the return policy.

Over to you - to you return bad beauty buys?  Or are you like me, and does the whole thing just sit wrongly with you?  Get chatting below!

I can't say that I've ever returned anything. I like to test everything properly before actually buying so there isn't usually a problem. BUT if the product was expired when I bought it or if it was broken or something then well I would return it.

I have taken a foundation back before - after I had opened it and used it. BUT they had changed the formula recently and I bought without knowing. The new foundation made me look like a oompa loompa!! It was so orange. The store was great and accepted it back (even though I had bought it a month earlier and kept it unopened until my current foundation was used up) I returned it the 1st day I opened it. And the girl in the store helped me find another foundation that suited me better.

I'll return other things, including meals in a restaurant and coffee, but not beauty products. If a product is clearly faulty then that's the exception, but for the most part it's not their fault it didn't suit me, and someone will always benefit from that mistake as I'll just gift it on.

Haha this may sound silly but I didn't think you could actually take beauty products back because of hygiene. I usually pass something on if I don't like it or change my mind, maybe in the future I will take it back

I never even knew this was an option in NZ! I know that nutrimetics have a return policy if your skin doesn't agree with their products but I have never had to use it. I think I would feel to bad regardless to return an item- probably why I try to buy all my makeup on special, just in case

If it is faulty I will return it but otherwise I usually just deal with it, afterall I made the decision to buy it.

I have, but probably not in the context this article relates to. In recent months I've had buyers remorse a couple of times where I couldn't justify the purchase once I get home, so I took it back (still packaged and unopened, of course). It was funny seeing the assistants reactions because clearly not many people do. I try not to make a habit of it though, obviously.

I've never tried taking back the 50 foundations I've bought in the wrong colour, or any other used products. I did have to take back some loose pigments I bought at one of those makeup sales because I got home and they were empty lol. I paid for it, I want the goods!

I returned a $13 stick deodorant once because the mechanism to wind it up didn't work, but I've got a mineral powder foundation that I purchased the wrong colour in, and wouldn't dare return it - I'm waiting til I've been in the sun too long haha. I'd say there would have to be a good reason for them to accept a return, not just 'oops I chose the wrong thing'.

No I dont return beauty products if they aren't quite what you expected, just doesn't seem right once you've tried them :-( costly when you get it wrong

I've never returned a beauty product... although in saying that I don't know if I ever would have needed to either.

I dont return them, I will give them to my friends and family

28th July, 2015

My beauty purchases that don't work for me get gifted to friends/family. I have only returned items when they have given me a skin reaction, as I like to inform the company when this happens, as it could be from a bad batch or cause reactions in others too.

I have bought that many foundations, BB cream in wrong shades and I never return them to the store. I suppose I can't do that when I already opened the packages and used the products. I ended giving up to my friends, or family. Same thing with lipsticks!

No, I've never returned a beauty product before. I didn't actually realise that we could. I think it would be great if we had return policies like the us does but I can't see retailers here being happy with used product being returned to Them!
