Do You LIE About Your Shopping Habits?

Poll posted by BR Natalie

  • It was on special.
  • This?  I've had it for ages.
  • My Mum bought me it as a treat.
  • I don't have anything else like it.
  • I won it.
  • It only cost ten-ty dollars.. (or th-orty.  or fi-xty.  or some other indeterminate figure of money.)

Are you guilty of telling these shopping porkie pies?  Who do you lie to?  Your partner?  Your mummy? (Don't judge me, I need her to think I'm a grown up).  Your friends? Yourself?

When it comes to The Husband's opinion on my shopping habits, I'm quite lucky for a number of reasons.

  1. He doesn't really notice 'stuff'.  He definitely doesn't notice 'girly stuff', or 'baby stuff' or 'beauty stuff'  Unless it's from the 'stinky shop'.  (Sorry Lush)
  2. If he does notice he's never really interested enough to go beyond; 'is that new?'.
  3. He once bought a car without telling me.  Ergo, he set precendant.

Now that being said, I will confess, I have used the very ambiguous 'it's for work' excuse a few times.  But that's only because I can't face another discussion where I try to explain a beauty item, what it does, why it's different, or why it is different to something he thinks is the same thing.  Especially when it's a $200 fragrance.  Cough.

I once went shopping with a friend who removed all the tags and packaging from her purchases before shoving them in her handbag and disposing of the 'evidence'.  Apparently she would then go home, and the next time she was home alone she'd put the items away, as if they'd always been there.

Another friend would 'embezzle' cash by getting cash out over the week, at the grocery store or fueling up the car and would then use the cash to buy new clothes...leaving no trace in the accounts.

Now both of these friends earn their own money, and I doubt they'd financially cripple themselves for a new pair of shoes; so what gives?  Why do we feel ashamed of buying things?  Are we all shopaholics with deep seeded issues?  Or are we victims of a judgy-mc-judgy society?  Is it the 'mum' thing?  You feel guilty spending on something as frivilous* as primer?  Or maybe you have friends who just don't get the beauty thing?  Or are saving the planet one op-shop purchase at a time?

Over to you - by the power of our anonymous voting system tell us - do you lie about your shopping habits? (Yes, white lies count!).

And if you're feeling brave, why not get chatting below.  The Beauty Confessional is open.

Our money goes into one bank account. I have been able to purchase online a few times without any comments, I also get things delivered to work, but there is the odd occasion when Husband may comment, like "Oh I see you have bought a BBBE again". I think there must be an amount that triggers his interest...but its all good, he just smiles at me.

I've heard of a lot of girls doing this but even though I have a lot of beauty products I don't actually spend a lot all at once so don't have this issue

10th June, 2017

Not really. One of the perks of being single is that I'm the only person who sees my bank statement.

I lie, I hide, I removed tags, I stash cash for secret purchases - I'm terrible! I cringe when I check on my delivery status and it says it's scheduled for a Saturday parcel delivery when my husband is home and I have to try and intercept it before the doorbell gets rung so I can sneak it inside!

Lucky I'm single - I can do whatever I like :)

8th June, 2017

I am in a committed relationship, however our finances are mostly separate. I pay for my own beauty/make up products so I don't feel the need to hide it. I also love bargain/sale shopping and even though it's genuine, he is seriously starting to doubt that line lol.

8th June, 2017

Last night I wrote out my shopping list for food and I also wrote down 5 things I wanted, cleansers and cleansing oils etc but this morning I jumped online and seen this article and felt giulty so I changed my mind about buying all these products. I only bought two lol

8th June, 2017

Even when I was in a relationship I kept my money separate and so long as I pay my share of the bills and carry my share of financial responsibilities reliably, then it's no body's business on how I spend my own coin.

8th June, 2017

Oh yes guilty of this more than once. I am always like it was on special so only cost me $5 or some low amount of money. My husband is none the wise because I do the bills anyway lol he's more interested in working on the farm than worrying about all that. I have it pretty cruisy though if I am honest. He tells me to spend money BUT he has no idea my foundation alone cost more than $40. He doesn't need to know that though hehe naaaaaughty

The good thing about being single is noone can judge your crazy shipping addiction. The bad thing is I have to spend all my own money :(

8th June, 2017

My partner and I have most of our finances separate, and I try to keep conversations about money open - which can be tricky. Recently we have both got onto a very dangerous online shopping app which has parcels arriving almost daily at the moment.

If I ever got the questioning eye, I would simply mention 'hunting stuff' and he would nod and understand

8th June, 2017

Is not saying anything classed as a lie? Normally by the time anyone notices I have had it for ages

8th June, 2017

I am single so don't need to explain myself to anyone but perhaps try to justify it to myself sometimes cause I know I buy things I really don't need. Hmmm that is a great price, I think I need that lol.

8th June, 2017

My partner wouldn't care but I've had so many parcels coming in lately that I have been sneaking them in when he's not home and quickly unboxing them to put them away just so I don't get asked questions "What's that?" "Where is that from?" "Why do you need that?" so it's not really the "how much is that?" or "how much are you spending on this stuff?" that I'm worried about :).

8th June, 2017

I do the 'It was on special' the other one 'No-Spend' let's be real, I don't have that sort of self control lol

Hahaha I use 'it was on special' to justify it to myself...

A policeman once told me ignorance is not an excuse (I didn't notice the change of speed sign) so if the other half doesn't notice it then it's their fault not yours?!

What is this shopping app? You know, asking for a friend, not like I'm going to go on it at all.

I thought it might be wish, I purposely have not signed up for it as I know I will buy stuff, lots of stuff off it.

Yes! My husband and I are like that. He buys stupid match box cars and I spend my money on skincare :)

My sister in law is terrible. I get told that around Christmas time the courier turns up to their door 6 times a day. My brother thinks she is having an affair with him ;).
