Cosmetic Surgery Holidays - Would You?

Article by BR Tabatha

Who doesn't look forward to a holiday?  A week or two of relaxation and you'll come back feeling like a new woman.  Of course in today's 'must have now' society, this isn't enough for some people.  They want to come back looking like a new woman too.  Cue the ever-increasing popularity of the cosmetic surgery holiday.

The cost of cosmetic surgery in New Zealand is expensive to put it mildly.  For a tummy tuck you certainly won't be getting change from $25000.  The full works (a muscular face lift, eye lift and neck lift) will cost you around $60000.  To have a veneer on just one tooth in New Zealand will cost around $1800.

So imagine if you can not only have the plastic surgery of your choice but do it in the luxury of a 5 star holiday resort for a fortnight, for around 70 per cent LESS than you'd pay here.  Thailand is a popular destination for cosmetic surgery holidays, where a tummy tuck will only set you back around $4000, the full works will cost $8000 and for $1600 you can have all of your veneers done.  With a holiday too.

There are dedicated 'travel agencies' around New Zealand that specialise in cosmetic surgery holidays, ensuring their customers return fresh faced and rejuvanated.  Apparently it's becoming increasingly common for couples or besties to go together, each getting something 'done'.

Of course there is concern among the New Zealand Association of Plastic Surgeons, mostly due to the risk of travelling after such surgeries (Deep Vein Thrombosis for example) and the fact that it can be hard to verify and trust in surgeon credentials, standards, quality assurance, short- and long-term follow-up, complications and risks.  Hospitals and procedures abroad are held to a completely different standard to here in NZ.

Would you ever consider a cosmetic surgery holiday?  Or maybe you have?  Do you think you should ever put a cap on price at the risk of quality, particularly with medical procedures?

Why not? „A week or two of relaxation and you'll come back feeling like a new woman. “ This sentence accurately describes my stay at the Formé clinic in Prague. Beautiful environment, excellent food, first class care. And especially without children! I strongly recommend everyone.

I have been asked to join a friend while they get surgery and got me thinking about dental over there that's something I'd be keen on for sure. There's loads of success stories but of course research is key don't just jump at the first cheap option. :) holiday is a bonus too !

I have a couple of friends who have travelled to Thailand for cosmetic surgery and have been pleased with the results. I don't think I ever would as worried about what could go wrong. Good luck to those who have successful results

I have heard nothing but good results about both surgery and dental work undertaken in Thailand but I believe you would need to look at referrals rather than simply booking through a travel agent who may or may not have even visited the place. I do believe there could be some risk involved but it would be a chance you take. Would I do it, if I had the money "hell yes"!

I'm looking into getting some improvements done myself. It's so tempting to go on one of these holidays myself, especially when some if my friends have had great results. But I'm a bit hesitant ant because I always worry that I'll be one of those unlucky ones to have complications etc. I'm still tossing up but I'm leaning more towards a surgeon in Sydney. I know it's more expensive but I'm worth it. Then I can just go holiday in Thailand and not have to worry about any surgery complications!

I think I've watched too many tv programmes on botched surgeries! I just haven't got the nerve......

I would if I personally knew a few people who had a successful trip. I am seriously thinking about going abroad to get my teeth done as NZ prices are ridiculous. I have one friend who has been and she said the hospitals were state of the art and put NZ to shame.

Wow they even have travel agencies that specialise in cosmetic surgery holidays. I'm certainly not looking at cosmetic surgery, but if I wanted to save money, I think why not. Yes there are risks, and I would be skeptical, but it seems quite common now, and as long as you do your research I don't have any problem with people doing this.

I have seen too many scary documentaries on this to want to, to be completely honest. The one exception would be heading to the US but even then I am happy with my body without the want or need to surgically alter it.

Im a bit of a chicken when it comes to travelling to foreign countries for surgeries. I think cause Ive seen programmes on tv of surgeries gone wrong overseas. I think I will just stick to NZ.

A friend of mine is going to Thailand at the end of the year to get herself breast implants. I jokingly said to her a couple of years ago that we should go on one of those plastic surgery holidays. I didn't actually think she would really do it. Guess I was wrong!

29th August, 2014

No thank you, I think i will just deal with what i have

I would consider a cosmetic holiday to get my boobs reduced, as they are a ridiculous size but trying to go publicly and getting funding through ACC is a nightmare. But paying privately is even worse than that.

29th August, 2014

It's in my plan to spend a few weeks in Thailand & come back with a new tummy & higher boobs. Just need to save a bit more!

29th August, 2014

Absolutely I would! I have friends who have been to Thailand. Amazing results. Great price!!
