Brow Shaping – Should you wax, pluck or thread?

"Why let someone else do for you what you can do yourself, except in the case of eyebrow maintenance."

Elle Woods - Legally Blonde

Eyebrows are the feature of your face to get right.  Whatever else is going on, be it breakouts or a bad choice of lippie colour, it's bad eyebrows people will notice first.  And even if everything else is going right with your makeup and overall look, bad eyebrow game will bring it down immediately.

Over plucked, under pluck, too sparse or unkempt are the main eyebrow faux pas, and unfortunately they are all very easily done by the amateur brow-scaper.

So let's talk about how to step up your brow game by investigating the different options of maintenance.

Unless you incredibly blessed, your eyebrows will need some sort of shaping and as always there are several options to choose from.  Let's look at the most common options.

Waxing.

Waxing is quick and easy for a professional to do and it generally lasts for 3 to 4 weeks.  It's no more nor less painful than plucking and just how painful depends on your pain threshold.

It's going to set you back around $15 in the salon, but a trained technician and eye is invaluable.  You'll need about 1/4 inch growth though, so you could look a little bushy between appointments.  It's also important to note that waxing isn't for those with sensitive skin or those using retanoid products as it can cause the skin to tear.

You could DIY at home, but it's very easy to take too much off and very difficult to create even shapes by yourself.

Threading.

A trained threader will use a thin cotton to pull the hair out.  It's generally quite less painful, but it does depend on how good you are with pain.  Threading lasts around 3 - 4 weeks but you only need 1/16th inch of growth, so you're going to look less bushy between visits! There are no chemicals involved, so if you have sensitive skin this is a great option.

Prices vary from $5 threads to $20+, but you might want to bear in mind you're probably going to get what you pay for - with an experienced threader the experience is going to be quick and more precise than waxing.

Plucking.

Hands up, who has plucked their own eyebrows? Yeap, that's what we thought!  Where would a woman be without her trusty tweezers?  Well dare we say it, they might be with better eyebrows!

Once you've bought yourself a pair of tweezers, plucking is the most economical way to maintain your brows.  But like scissors, tweezers have a quality scale.  A decent pair of tweezers are going to set you back around $25 - $35.  Don't scrimp!  Your tweezers should have a slanted tip and you might find it useful to have a pair of super pointy tweezers for ingrown or very short hairs.  Square tips may allow you to remove more hairs at once but this can lead to ingrown hairs.  The inside of your tweezer tips should be scuffed to help them grip the hair.  They should be matte coated on the outside so you can grip them lightly without them slipping.

Plucking puts you in complete control of your brow shape, which is great if you're a control freak, but if you get carried away and over pluck, you might just end up cursing yourself!

Shaping Guide.

There's a whole science behind shaping your eyebrows to suit your face shape and features - this is why seeing a professional, at least for an initial shaping is your best bet.

But here's a general guide for all eyebrows:

  • Hold your tweezers (or a pencil) vertically against the side of your nostril.  This is where your eyebrows should start.  In particular, don't pluck them shorter than this guide.  Just as you don't want a mono-brow, you don't want too-far apart brows either.
  • Hold your tweezers diagonally from your nostril to the outer corner of your eye.  Where the line intersects your eyebrow is where they should end.
  • Stare straight at the mirror.  Your arch should begin level with the far edge of your iris, right on the brow bone.

Dos and Don'ts of eyebrow shaping.

  • Do schedule your plucking sessions after a warm shower, the hair is more easily removed
  • Don't continue plucking if you've over plucked.  Stop!  Do not attempt to 'even' out the other one.  Grab your eyebrow kit, fill it in and wait for it to grow back!
  • Do use a white eye pencil to draw a guide line - stick to it!
  • Don't pluck from above your arch unless you have errant strays.
  • Do brush your brows to your advantage - upwards for sparse brows and to the side for thick brows.
  • Do trim ridiculously long hairs carefully with a pair of nail scissors

And there we have our guide to eyebrow maintenance and shaping. How do you maintain your eyebrows?  Have you had any disasters or do you always leave them in the hands of a pro?

I'm a plucker and I do trim my eyebrows when the hairs get too long. However unfortunately I'm not blessed with great eyebrows like most of you ladies, I just kind of draw them on (not too obviously) Would love a write up about different products, techniques and shapes for brows. xx

I'm lucky enough to not have to use an eyebrow pencil or get my brows shaped. Their natural, full and dark. I've tried the pencil look but it really does not suit me so I just stick to getting them waxed once a month and plucking plucking out the odd stray in between times.

My brows drive me crazy, they're naturally very dark and thick and have a weird natural shape! So I'm always struggling to get them looking groomed. One day!

I get my eyebrows plucked about every 6 weeks to keep the shape but pluck my strays myself in between visits. I find plucking works best for me as there is less skin irritation afterwards and I get a much better finish and precise shape! I get mine done at Phoenix cosmetics and have been doing so for almost 3 years now!

I remember when I was a little girl, (lol like 16) mum took me to a beauty place so I could get my eyebrows waxed so then I could maintain the shape myself, I think it was the best thing ever although regular visits are great to rebalance the growth maybe :)

This is a great read. I have done it all, plucked, waxed & threaded. It is all a learning kerb. I now go for threading as I find it less painful, more accurate and so quick to get done. When at home between appointments I do go in with tweezers to tidy up. But I found if your new to maintaining brows, please, please, please go to a pro first. this way you can learn what shape works for you. Also it is really inexpensive!

I love getting my brows done! I get mine waxed every 4-5 weeks. I go to the same person each time, I feel like she knows the shape I like and never makes them too thin. For a while when I was a student I would go to a different person each time (for the cheapest deal) but they would ALWAYS without fail make them too thin. The only problem I have with my eyebrows is they are a wee bit unruly and very light. I have had them dyed in the past but they never get to the right color.

Plucking and now and then get them done professionally. Once I got them threaded ouch. Hurt way to much she did a nice shape but never again

I too, have been blessed with good brows. I've never had them waxed - always plucked myself and then don't have the need to do that very often. However, I have had threading done (top lip) but I'm keen to try it on my eyebrows. I much prefer threading to waxing. No red marks afterwards nor does my skin break out a day or two later.

I used to never get the hype about brows and used to rock horrible unruly long brows. I used to pluck them so they weren't giant and thick but not to any shape, both were uneven and just not good. Got them waxed about a couple of months ago and my goodness what a difference! Couldn't stop looking at them! Unfortunately my skin reacts with wax, but have had great results with upper lip threading so I think I will get my brows threaded next time as well :)

I am a fan of threading however since I've been pregnant I have been plucking and trimming them myself (Kandee the make up artist YouTube makeup tutorials are my fav!) she has a great video on maintaining them at home with pluckers, eyebrow comb and cuticle scissors. I was put off waxing after a beauty therapist ripped my whole eyebrow off, never again.

I will only get my brows waxed if I have stuffed up the shape while plucking. But I do prefer to pluck because for some odd reason my brows grow back faster if they are waxed.

I'm a strictly 'leave-it-to-the-professionals' kind of girl. After years of plucking the life out of my brows I now get someone with skills and no-how to tame them. I prefer to get them waxed as it's quick and gets a lot of the blonde baby hairs. I haven't tried threading, and am not sure how I'd like it but have always wondered what the heck it was (until now!). Thanks BR, some excellent tips that I'll have to try to check my brows are in tip top shape!

ive been lucky that i have a good shape but i usually jjust get a brow tidy done every 6 weeks or so (or when have a date or event coming up) to get rid of unruley hairs

wax usually but most technitions Ive been to usually pluck stray ones at the end too

11th August, 2014

I have always been blessed with lots of eyebrow. When I was 12 my aunty (who was 15) sat me down and decided it was time we plucked my eyebrows. They were definitely two different shapes which was really lovely - but at least I didn't have the 'almost' mono-brow. I kept them like this for a while - let a few grow back to try and even them out and it was okay. I decided for my 21st I wanted to get them re-done as a treat and the lady was like oh my goodness these are so uneven. So I spent a while growing them again and getting them fixed up and I think I almost got there - but they were still a bit uneven. About a year later I went to a beauty therapist in town and she ever so nicely plucked a hole in my left one. I have been trying to grow it out but I often just pluck the little ones without really seeing how they contribute to the whole picture, and I have had this hole ever since. The other day I went to get them done again and the lady said ever so nicely - I think we should let that one grow for a bit - DONT TOUCH IT. So this time I am going to try and give it a real go/grow and not touch them ever and hopefully have two matching eyebrows in the near future!!
