Body Scrubs - the BR Guide

Article by BR Tabatha

This week we're all about scrubbing - so we thought we'd bring you a quick BR guide to one of the most useful but underrated beauty products - scrubs.

Why should I get my scrub on?

Scrubs are a way to exfoliate your body by using rough grains to smooth away dead skin cells and hard skin build up.  Other than the smooth skin you can expect these benefits from giving your skin a regular scrub; acne prevention, minimising the appearance of pores and they're also amazing for boosting circulation and can help even skin tone over time!  Generally you'll use them on damp skin and rinse away with water.

Exfoliating is often used to prep the skin for another treatment, for example you'll often exfoliate before applying fake tan or having a mud or wrap treatment.  Exfoliating can also be really beneficial to those that suffer from ingrown hairs.

But of course - there's a whole range of scrubs to choose from, depending on the area of the body and what you need to scrub away, so you could find yourself overwhelmed when picking out your next scrub.  But never fear, we've got you covered!

Buy or make?

The great thing about scrubs, are that they are truly a beauty product for all budgets.  You can buy gorgeous scrubs packed full of scrummy ingredients or make you own using as little as two ingredients!

Types of Scrub:

Salt scrubs combine fine yet quite coarse salt with a cream or oil.  The benefits include the fact that salt disolves so you're not left with gritty bits after you've rinsed!

Sugar scrubs are used in the same manner as salt scrubs - it can be really nice to pair them with sweet almond oil, but you can use olive oil!  Sugar scrubs make delicious lip scrubs!

Fruit can be used in a number of ways.  Fruit enzmye have a natural exfoliating effect.  Seeds and pits can be crushed to create coarse grains that can be mixed with fruit oils to create a scrub.  You'll need to rinse well as the seeds will not dissolve!

Loofah you know your favourite loofah?  Slather yourself in your favourite body butter or cream and loofah away for a thorough scrubbing!  Be sure to rinse your loofah well after!

Coffee scrubs are THE scrub of the moment.  Why?  Well we're guessing it's the anti-cellulite claims! The caffiene in coffee scrubs have an affect when applied directly to the skin - they cause it to tighten and deliver lots of anti-oxidents.  So while you might not be getting rid of cellulite for good, you're going to be visibly reducing the appearance of the dreaded orange peel!  And you can make an effective one yourself using your own coffee grounds!

How often should I scrub?

If your body scrub has round exfoliating beads you can scrub 2 to 3 times a week.  If you're using a coarse scrub, like the ones listed above, aim for a good weekly scrubbing!

When shouldn't I scrub?

You should never scrub open wounds or sores, nor irritated skin.  If your skin is sensitive you'll want to use a gentle scrub with minimal pressure.

I love using scrubs to exfoliate as they make your skin so soft! I usually exfoliate once a week, and because of my sensitive skin I have to be careful not to over do it.

I really want to try the frank scrub. I have heard so many wonderful things about it

18th November, 2014

I use exfoliating gloves in the shower with my body wash. I love the way my skin tingles afterwards.

17th November, 2014

I haven't made my own body scrubs - there are way too many delicious ones to buy and I have yet to try them all.

I am kinda obsessed with 'the scrub of your life' by soap and glory!!!

9th November, 2014

I absolutely love my skin after exfoliating! im yet to make my own but am so keen to try. does anyone have a great homemade, pocket friendly recipe?

I make my own scrub for my psoriasis and stretch marks and it totally works!! Frank was way to harsh on my sensitive skin and they use mineral salt which isn't nearly as good for your skin as epsom salts! I basically put all the same goodies plus more and my stretch marks on my tummy have faded right out! I now get orders from friends for my scrubs because they work so well. Thinking on pushing it further maybe ;) but definitely worth trying to make your own. Start simple and add Iingredients that work for what you want to acheive. Google your little hearts out on beneficial ingredients you can add to customize your own scrub. Lots of fun too.

oh boy am I sucker for a good scrub :D It always feels like a special moment to myself when I get the scrub out in the shower & really go to town on my body. While I haven't ever made my own (but have a friend who does often) I have tried a whole range of them with sugar scrubs being one of my favourite followed closely by fruit ones with a bit more grit.

Have not been into scrubs, but the coffee/sugar scrub sounds like something I would love to give a go with and will look around tat Lush for one.

I love making my own and packing them as gifts for family. I make a salt and oils of my choice and use it every second week only once. I love how my skin glows after it.

Here's a quick and easy tip for a hand scrub - a teaspoon of sugar, rub into hands, wash off and you get the softest hands ever.

I've been a loyal loofah fan,but this is mainly because I can't seem to find a scrub I like. I've been on the look out for a decent scrub for a while now. I keep seeing the 'Gutsy Body Scrub' pop up on Facebook. Claims to: "destroys cellulite, removes stretch marks. dark scars and ends ugly skin." Anyone tried it before???

6th November, 2014

I have never actually tried a scrub. I would love to is there a good scrub I could try either buy or make?

6th November, 2014

I love using a scrub. I confess to using a body scrub more frequently than a facial scrub, but love the soft, silky feeling after you have used them. I have probably used too many to mention, both commercial and home made or natural, and generally speaking the majority leave you with the same feeling and most of them do the job, so it is personal preference, or sensitivity issues which would determine the one for you. The fact that you are using a scrub or good enough for me!

4th November, 2014

I never really use body scrubs that much, just on my face, but I think I should start as my skin tone is a bit uneven and I think I need to get rid of some dead skin cells to make it smoother and more even.
