Best of Beauty Review - Your Top 10 Reads of 2017

29 January, 2018 - 08:02pm by - Head Pixie | 17 Comments

Compiled by BR Kellie

2017 felt like a crazy cool year for beauty. We saw wacky, wild and wonderful trends come and go. Cosmetic companies created beautiful products and collections. And skincare companies continued to up their game and create products that care for and improve our skin. Through the year it was our pleasure to bring your attention to the latest beauty news, as well as to reinvestigate those beauty bits and bobs that we shouldn't forget about, yet sometimes do.

Which articles captured your attention? We delved into the analytics and discovered your Top 10. Check these out...

10. Boobie Traps - 7 Signs You're Wearing the Wrong Sized Bra!

From the 'double boob' to the 'saggy strap', we revealed the clues that show you're not giving your girls all the support they need. If there's one thing you do this year - get yourself properly fitted! Your lady lumps will thank you for it!

9. Behind the Brands: Makeup Direct

The 'Behind the Brands' series is one of our favourites because we get to discover more about the beauty brands and businesses we love - and the faces behind them! In 2017 we were lucky enought to meet Moyra Parker from Makeup Direct, and it would seem you were as curious to find out about her as we were!

8. Kellie tried CUPPING her Face - Is it an INSTANT FACELIFT?

The lengths we'll go to a) look more youthful and b) try something that might make for an entertaining article. When I saw face cupping on Instagram I knew I had to try it out - and I was glad I did. I loved the results! Alas, winter rolled in and I didn't feel like sitting in front of a mirror in a cold room with nothing on from the chest up for fifteen to twenty minutes while cups were sucking my face. So I switched to jade rolling and depuffed my face from the comfort of bed.

7. Things I Wish I knew before I had an Undercut

When BR Natalie said she was going to give an undercut a go in the name of beauty... well, she immediately became the bravest of us all in BRHQ. Heck, not only did she allow her hairdresser to give her an undercut, she let her husband carve a design into it. Would I trust my husband to do that? Nope. But she did... and she gave you the lowdown on what life with an undercut is really about. (And if you haven't read it - DO. It's hilarious!)

6. Do you know what you're getting from the Parallel Importer?

Beauty Review has always championed the New Zealand beauty industry, which is why from the outset it was our mission to educate consumers on the differences between buying from a parallel importer and buying from an official distributor or stockist. Four years on this article explaining what parallel importing is all about is still making it into the Top 10 read articles.

5. Thinking of Balayage? Three techniques you NEED to consider!

Colour trends come and go, but balayage looks to be one that's here to stay - as well as one you beauties were keen to find out about in 2017!

4. Magnetic Eyelashes: Eye-Opening or Eye-Watering?

False eyelashes can be fiddly to apply, so when we saw magnetic eyelashes were becoming a thing we had to find out more! Did they hurt? Could they hurt? More importantly... do they work? I read recently that Ardell has brought out a range of magnetic eyelashes which would indicate this new method of eyelash application isn't just a trend but is here to stay!

3. How does at-home IPL compare to Salon IPL?

Nat was given the opportunity to trial the Remington i-LIGHT® Pro+ Face & Body, and the results were amazing - as can be seen in the series of articles she wrote, which not only show before and after pictures, but delve into the differences - and similarities - between at-home IPL and in-salon IPL. A fascinating read.

2. The Ten BEST Foundations in New Zealand!

Coming in at number two was one of our Top Ten compilations featuring the ten most-loved foundations as rated by YOU! We love these articles as they're the perfect way to showcase what products are most loved by New Zealand women.

And finally... at number one... (imaginary drum roll please!)

1. The Ten TOP RATED Mascaras in New Zealand!

This topped our most-read articles, and within the Top Ten mascara article the Eye of Horus Goddess came in at number one with a stunning 4.7/5 rating.

So there you have it! The top ten most read articles in 2017. Are you surprised that mascara and foundation topped the list? Were any of your faves on the list? Is there anything you're curious about that you're burning for us to write in 2018? Chat away!

1.Microblading 2.Expensive beauty treatments vs. Affordable treatments / alternatives / products 3.What's the deal with paraben / Sulphate free haircare? 4.Is keratin treatment good for you? 5.BR crew doing a week long challenge of wearing a different bold lip colour each day (or eyeshadow combo) 6.BR crew must-haves (every 3-4 months) 7.Unusual beauty treatments

30th January, 2018

They were all great articles :)

30th January, 2018

I didn't know there was a way to rate the articles. No I'm not surprised mascara was near the top if you're supposed to chuck it out every three months and get a new one so people are looking for recommendations. I think the one of the ones I referred to the most was the batch codes one. Also loved the one on the money saving beauty tips.

30th January, 2018

I haven't actually read all of these! Will definitely be reading them tonight ;-)

30th January, 2018

Awesome to go through these articles in - I think my favourite (and definitely very useful) are the bra article and the foundation article. Have recommended both to other people before even.

The other really useful article not listed was the batch number one - about the age of discount products. Just keep returning to it.

30th January, 2018

The one on product expiration I found interesting I had no idea

30th January, 2018

I loved behind the scenes and the parallel import information. Mascara was a good one too and no I am not surprised as foundation and mascara are a daily use product -All really good information and interesting reads
