Beauty That Burns

The other day Queenie burst into BRHQ brimming with news.

“Have you heard about the candle that’s a moisturiser?”

“Um, what?”

“There’s this candle, and it’s a moisturiser!”

Cue me looking at her like she’d grown a second head, unable to fathom how a candle could work as a moisturiser.

“Um… so you roll it over your body?” I replied, wondering why this woman kept me on (clearly for the laughs…).

Queenie patiently explained the concept behind a candle that is also a moisturiser to me, but being a curious pixie I had to get on Google and find out more for myself – because quite frankly I just couldn’t bring myself to believe that a candle could be a moisturiser too – all that hot drippiness? Well it all sounded a bit ‘Body of Evidence’ to me… which it turns out it kind of is… sort of…

The theory behind lotion candles (also sometimes known as massage candles) is that you light them, enjoy their delicious fragrance, and then after a bit you extinguish the flame, scoop up some of the warm liquid and massage it into your body.

So how do you not get burnt to bits? Turns out that it’s low burn point means it become a delightfully pleasant oil that’s warm to the touch and due to the perfect temperature sinks into the skin when massaged in.

And what makes it so nourishing? Ingredients often mentioned include cocoa butter, shea butter, almond oil, argan oil, and coconut oil – so basically all the good stuff you’d find in a body lotion, the only difference is that it’s combined with soy wax and turned into a product that does double duty.

So not really Body of Evidence at all then… in saying that after another quick Google you can find massage candles readily available in New Zealand adult stores, iykwim. But they’re also available through other avenues too, such as here, here and you can make your own here.

So tell me… was the concept of a candle that doubles as a moisturiser new to you too? Have you discovered these before? Have you already tried them? What’s your thoughts on them? Chat away!

Would love to try this

This sounds really interesting. I think I'd be a bit scared initially that it would be burn me too! I've also heard of candles that double as perfume - u just put a bit of the wax on your pulse points after you blow them out. Love multitasking products!!

This sounds intriguing :-)

Wow this is so interesting! I love the idea about this concept, I didnt know these existed but I want the Surmanti Creme brulee massage candle, sounds so delicious!

Sounds nice :) and smells nice too :)

I've heard about them before and the sound so delightful, especially if someone else is giving you a massage!!

Have heard of these before, they were on sale at adult store so bought a couple. Think it was Candycane scented and a vanilla one. I liked them better as candles rather than massaged into the cream. Felt a bit thick on the skin afterwards, but each to their own :)

Wow it sounds really interesting! Would be a nice winter product :-)

I've never heard of it before. Hmmm I wonder how my skin would feel once I've worked it in. Would the soy wax leave a bit of film behind? Off to Google I go!

I actually remember starting thread in the forum discussing this. I was asking around for brand recommendations. I actually was considering trying Surmanti there but then found another brand that seemed a bit more affordable. I still plan to purchase a massage candle once I check a few other things off my wishlist.

I haven't heard of this one, but I have heard of la reve candles which do the same! they're quite pricey tho!

oooh this seems like a really nice way to create an overall ambiance for Massages.

I think it's too much effort for me but as a special treat a professional candle massage would be lovely.

I haven't tried a candle moisturiser but I do love solid ones like the lush massage bars!
