At-home IPL - is it Better Than Traditional Hair Removal?

20 November, 2016 - 09:30pm by - First Lady | 13 Comments

Article by BR Natalie

With so many choices in life it can be hard to make a decision.  This is where the handy pros and cons list never fails.  (Unless your name is Ross Geller).

Spoiler alert - I'm currently testing an at-home IPL machine, and it's caused a lot of questions from my family and friends.  Not just the ladies either, I have menfolk asking if it'll permanently remove random patches of their body hair!

So before I share my IPL journey I thought it'd be a good idea to look at where IPL fits in the at-home hair removal scheme of things. I've gone back to basics with a good old fashioned pros and cons list for at-home hair removal methods.

IPL - Best for legs, underarms, bikini area and facial hair from the cheeks down.

Average time spent using IPL a year: 5 hours (after which you're up to 94% hair free - permanently)

Pros Cons
  • Infinity bulbs!  There's now no need to buy replacement heads, and Remington even replace the bulbs for free if it stops working!
  • After just 3 sessions in 4 weeks there's up to a 94% reduction in hair .
  • Readily available from Farmers
  • You can choose your level of intensity - even the highest setting isn't as bad as epilating or waxing!
  • You can shave between sessions so you don't need to worry about timing your sessions for events.
  • Conservatively you could be pretty much permanently hair-free in 5 hours (over several sessions)
  • No products, lotions or creams are needed so it's great for sensitive skin.
  • It's a hygenic machine, which means you can share it with your nearest and dearest!
  • The inital outlay is expensive.
  • It's not suitable for really dark skin tones, or pale hair.
  • It takes an hour to do your legs and armpits and you have to shave first.
  • The machine is noisy.

Shaving - Best for legs and underarms

Average time spent shaving a year: 35 hours

Pros  Cons
  • Quick and easy.
  • Readily available from your supermarket.
  • You can borrow your hubbie's razor in an emergency.
  • It's painless.
  • It actually helps exfoliate dry skin.
  • Shaving creams can help moisturise your skin, keeping it smooth.

  • Ingrown Hairs.
  • The results will only last a day or so before your skin feels stubbly.
  • Can cause razor burn if you don't use a good shaving cream or gel.
  • You can cut yourself - scabs do not a smooth leg make.  They also put you at risk for infectiokn.
  • Over time it's an expensive method, with the ongoing cost of replacing blades and shaving creams/gels.
  • You need to be in the bath or shower really, or at least have warm water available.
  • Shaving is the most time consuming at-home hair removal method, with the average shaver spending 5 - 10 minutes a day shaving, that's 30 hours a year!

Waxing - Best for legs, bikini area, upper lip, underarms and eyebrows

Average time spent waxing a year: 30 hours

Pros

Cons

  • Waxing results can last 3-4 weeks
  • Hair grows back finer.
  • After a period of years hair growth becomes sparse.
  • There's a choice of kits, from roll on waxes, wax strips and microwavable wax.
  • Waxing is quite a time efficient hair removal method with the average waxer spending an hour a month waxing.
  • Ingrown Hairs.
  • Pain - depending on your individual pain threshold it can be quite painful.
  • Waxing isn't suitable for sensitive skin.
  • Waxing can bruise and tear skin if improper technique is used.
  • Waxing can be very messy.
  • At-home waxing generally requires a 2mm growth of hair.

Epilating - Best for legs, underarms, arms, bikini area and face

Average time spent epilating a year: 17 hours

  • Results can last 3-5 weeks.
  • Hair grows back finer.
  • After a period of years hair growth becomes sparser.
  • Hair only needs to be 0.5mm to be epilated.
  • There are no chemicals/products used so it's great for sensitive skin.
  • Epilators can be used on most areas of hair growth.
  • There is no mess nor need for rinsing.
  • Ingrown Hairs.
  • Pain - it's probably the most painful removal method.  (I'm pretty good with pain and my mum had to pin my leg down when I tried it!)
  • A good epilator can be quite expensive.
  • You'll need to be near a power point or keep it charged up.
  • An epilator will last around 6 years, after that it'll need replacing.

Depilatory Cream - Best for upper lip, underarms and bikini area

Average time spent epilating a year: 35 hours

Pros Cons
  • Pain free.
  • Very affordable.
  • A great method for beginners in hair removal.
  • It removes hair just below the surface, so can boast longer results than shaving.
  • It can be very messy.
  • Generally depilatory creams have an unpleasant smell.
  • You'll need to leave the cream on for around 10 minutes to see results.
  • Sensitive skin may be easily irritated by the cream.
  • The results do not last more than a few days.
  • It needs rinsing off, you can't do this on the fly.

So there's our Pros and Cons list for the four main at-home hair removal methods.  Which do you use most often and why?  Are you tempted to switch or are you happy with the status quo?

Interesting that shaving and epilating is the same amount of time

21st November, 2016

I'd do anything that didn't involve pain!

21st November, 2016

I started getting laser hair removal (medical grade laser, not IPL) at a clinic and I am hooked! It's worked really well for me (pale skin, dark hair). I've had two sessions on my lower legs. I had the last session three weeks ago and haven't had to shave at all since. I got a special deal by buying four sessions which cost me around $500. This is well worth it to me as my hair is dark and looks like it needs shaving as soon as I've done it. I come out in a shaving rash no matter what I do, if I shave more than every two days. I'm also getting my underarms done which is the best thing ever. And yes it does hurt!

21st November, 2016

I have an epilator for my legs, doesn't do super well on my underarms but when I do epilate my legs it is awhile before it grows back. Everything else I tweeze and shave. I would love to IPL my upper lip and body hair.

Usually I use cream but I have used an IPL which was really good

21st November, 2016

I started epilating two years ago and the first 5 times were excruciating. I gave up and went back to shaving. After 6 months, I thought I'd give the epilator a go again, but this time I got sneaky ... I stopped shaving and had my legs waxed. After 4 months (and 4 leg wax sessions), I began epilating and hardly felt a thing! The only spots that still occasionally hurt are around my ankles, knees and the tops of my thighs. If you're thinking about epilating, I'd suggest waxing a few times first, it definitely helps to weaken the hairs and makes the whole process less painful.

I have been looking into IPL machines lately. Reading reviews. Look forward to hearing your results.

21st November, 2016

I've looked into IPL a couple of times, maybe it is time to look into it again.

21st November, 2016

Yeah I'm over shaving , plucking and waxing. I would love to try IPL . Look forward to reading your journey with the IPL.

21st November, 2016

Id love an IPL machine for at home!!! :)

21st November, 2016

Want want want an IPL machine it suits me I have dark hair and long legs that I am sick of shaving lol this would be like magic I am going to have to save up but it's so hard when you keep bringing out awesome Beauty Box's that are very hard to resist . I have decided I really need a IPL machine and I am going to save up or otherwise keep shaving my legs every second day :( and when we go camping well shaving your legs in cold water is a definite no no learnt that one from experience many moons ago.

21st November, 2016

Wish I could do IPL - I'm so lazy it would make me so happy! But I def fall into the 'pale hair' category, so it's a no-go!

Me too Macs. Anything effective and non painful would be worth a go.

I hadn't even thought of doing a salon review. I guess because it's more of a clinic specialising in appearance medicine. So I haven't tried anything else they do as it doesn't really interest me at this stage.

That's what I'm worried about .

I do laser hair removal and the pain is well worth it for the results. Less painful than waxing and threading (or even shaving rash) in the long run.
