Article by BR Kellie

I have a friend who doesn’t age. Ever. I’m sure of it. She’s spent the last ten years of our friendship looking the same. Even the sleepless nights of motherhood have not impacted on her youthful good looks. I have often wondered what magic she’s in possession of. Does she bathe in virgin’s blood? Sup on sheep placenta smoothies for breakfast, lunch and tea? For a good long time I was miffed. Then I met her mother, who easily looked twenty years younger than her actual age, and it hit me….Gosh darn it, she had genetics on her side! She was destined to look youthful!

Is it really that simple though? Are some people guaranteed, thanks to winning the genetic lottery, to age well while the rest of us wake up daily to new wrinkles and further collagen-deprived skin? Well, according to the initial findings in Olay’s Multi-Decade and Ethnicity study, it would seem so… but, there is hope!

The MDE study, led by Dr. Alexa Kimball, Professor of Dermatology at Harvard Medical School/Massachussets General Hospital, alongside leading scientific and analytical research partners, in combination with personal genetic company, 23andMe, reached across women in their 20s to 70s from a range of ethnicities, and to date the study has yielded some interesting results.

Initial findings show that there is in fact a unique factor some women hold that comprises of around 2000 genes. We all have these genes, but it’s the way they are expressed in these lucky women’s skin that is responsible for their ageless look.

“What’s exciting about these findings,” said Dr. Rosemarie Osborne, Procter & Gamble (P&G) Beauty Research Fellow, “is that the genes that make up the unique skin fingerprint of ‘exceptional skin agers’ may hold the key to successful aging, and decoding which pathways they affect and why they are acting differently in these women – nature or nurture – can enable Olay researchers to help more women achieve skin that looks like the exception, not the rule at any stage of life.”

Another outcome from the study was that scientists were able to discover “tipping points” in time for gene expression. For example, in the 20s a decline in antioxidant response was noted and in the 50s a decline in skin barrier function could be seen.

What’s so wonderful about this research (at least for those of us who age at the usual rate) is that it could lead to the creation of skincare that will have those around us not in the know wondering where our steady supply of sheep placenta comes from or whether we’ve a herd of donkeys out back that we milk every day for our baths a la Cleopatra.

But until that time comes, what should us ageing types do? Toss out our night creams like a toddler tosses its toys? Of course not! While we may not be blessed with the magical anti-ageing genes, we can still work with what we’ve got and use skincare to nourish and protect, and besides, a little help is better than no help at all, right?

So are you blessed with these 2000 odd genes that keep you looking younger for longer?  Do you know someone who might? Or do you have some tips for keeping skin looking more youthful that you’d care to share? We’d love to hear them!

I have a couple of friends like that... I swear they don't age at all! It must be good genetics but I still hunt out lotions and potions to help me as my mother aged prematurely so I need all the help I can get right?! :)

My mum only has smokers lines (even though she doesn't smoke) and she is 43 at the end of this month. I actually don't know whether I do or don't have these genes. Let's hope so! Haha.

When I was in my early 30s I lived next door to a then well known dermatologist. His advice was to clean and then put cream on your face morning and night. To smooth it upwards and under your chin and out towards your ears. He said expensive creams will come and go but the importance of applying a face cream was the main factor to remember.

My granny always used Nivea face cream and she still had beautiful skin in her 90s.

You can forget to do a lot of things in life that no one will worry about, however looking after your skin is right up there with the essential habits to form for a life time. I think it pays off and as I grow older I get lots of compliments about my skin!

I'm not 100% sure but my parents could both pass for younger than their age but I do attribute it to years of eating really healthy lots of vegetables and fruit and plain water since I grew up in the tropics, junk food was expensive and greens and natural food was cheap and if we wanted it unless it was a special occasion we had to pay out of our own pocket for it. Someone has said that every time you get pregnant you stop aging due to the youth or growth hormones in your body increasing or some stuff like that or maybe it's just a healthier diet, I'm not sure but my mom had eleven children so there may be some truth in that. My best advice is not new just lots of greens, fruit and as clean a diet as possible also start good skincare habits early. Sunscreen is for any age, prevention is better than cure.

I don't think I'm blessed, but I have friends who I am sure are. Both in their 30's and they look 25! or younger. So rude, but they're so gorgeous so I don't hold it against them!

If I have to hope good genes to save me from looking old well I've had it I put all my faith in my beauty lotions and potions and serums I've lived life hard and fast and the years are showing I regret nothing xx Live life

At age 50, my Mom was still mistaken for someone in their mid- to late 30's and I can only hope that I have her good skin genes. I'm 36 and still get asked when I'll be turning 30, so fingers crossed that I'll age gracefully with good looking skin.

2nd September, 2015

I am naughty because had I not cared not much about not being girly and sticking to my tom boy ways I would have looked after my skin alot more. I only started doing so when I hit my late twenties. I still hold my age well or so I am told. I still get asked for ID so I must be doing something right I guess. My mama is 51 and she is absolutely beautiful. Her skin is smooth and flawless with only a few under the eye lines showing. I can only hope that I had these genes passed on to me too. For my skin regime I include water, sunscreen, cleanser and moisturiser with a few masks thrown in to keep my skin on its toes.

a few years ago & I would have said yes, I could have these genes but my aging has just started catching up with me, though this could be a combination of the stress I have been under & the fact that I'm not that kind to my body... I do have people often tell me they think I'm younger than I am but I think that's more to do with my personality & maturity level than my actual looks.

2nd September, 2015

My Mum and Dad always looked younger than their actual ages, and most of my sisters and brother have been youthful-looking as well. I think I have inherited some of the good genes from my parents, I have always looked younger than my actual age. Now in my more mature years, I find age is slowly catching up with me, yes it is annoying, but I have to accept that ageing is a natural process for all of us eventually.

2nd September, 2015

My Mum and sister always looked young for their age and my face is more this way too however saggy neck seems to be in our genes and I would love to do something about that.I always use m always use moisturiser daily and serum at night .I think it is important to look after your skin even if you have good genes.

1st September, 2015

Um, and it's probably better to try and age well than try not to age at all. Cover-ups can be aging !

1st September, 2015

Thinking of my friends and family, I think we mostly age at the same rate and show pretty much the same signs at the same time. Thinner people can look younger for longer without the sagging that bigger people get when their fat changes distribution in their 50s. Having said that, diet and exercise are clear front runners for speed of aging. But that's just my observations of the people around me. Not too scientific.

1st September, 2015

I think my genes are decent, but not amazing in terms of aging. However I will be really interested to see what their future research leads to in terms of whether they can start to manipulate those genes. And I might start increasing my antioxidants for now.

1st September, 2015

I think i'm ageing quite rapidly. Im noticing lines. I haven't found a miracle cream yet. I have creams that are temporary fixes. I have been dreaming of trying botox for my forehead lines only. I dont know if its just me being super critical.

Yeah you could be right Keri. Maybe we are harsh on ourselves. I'd like plastic surgery as well.

I have heard that botox is fantastic for the forehead lines and crows feet around the eyes.

I have forehead lines, inherited from my Dad, has never bothered me because I have always hidden them with a fringe, I look funny without a fringe.

Maybe I should get Bangs. I've always wanted to try that. I'm on day 3 without the smokes. I hope it does clear up a little.

See I always thought the opposite, that bigger (women especially) age better because the extra fat helps plump up wrinkles, whereas slimmer people have less fat to fill out their face. Also just personal experience based on the women in my family lol

I have also noticed larger people have younger skin -They don't get wrinkles and loose flesh.
